What's your must have camping gadget
« on: August 21, 2012, 07:32:56 PM »
I'm heading to the Melbourne 4x4 show this weekend with a hundred bucks to get myself a birthday present and I need some help.  What's your "must have" camping gadget?

Last year I picked up a prawn peeler from one of those sideshow sellers. Now that's a must have, although I'm not so keen on the built in bottle top remover it has, especially if peeling raw prawns!

All good (and not so good) ideas considered.  I 'll report back on what I get.

Cheers

I just bought myself a decent camping chair - best thing I ever did!!  I had a cheapie before and the difference in comfort level is amazing (so was the price difference but that is beside the fact!)

Ear plugs so you don't hear the evening bodily functions of other campers.

Time.

Unfortunately, that's my camping must have,which I don't have.........
Why do people ask "What the hell were you thinking?"
Obviously I was thinking I was going to get away with it and not have to explain it....

At the recent Camping Show we bought a vacuum sealer which should hopefully be very useful... we also bought two decent camper chairs, they're on order as they sold so many at the show price they ran out of stock on the day! I can't wait to try mine out... I almost fell asleep in one it was that good "sure kids go play at the cfs stall, Mummy is just going to try out this chair for a bit longer".

The show before that we came home having paid a deposit on a camper trailer!

Coleman Auto On LED Cooler Light.  Best money spent ever.  Can see your drink straight away, and wows your mates with how bright it is.

Like many folks on here I suppose, I have a bunch of "modes" from swag to full trailer. Things I always take irrespective of how I sleep -

Head torch
Camp Oven
Good Chair.

The step-up from cheap camping chairs to a great camping chair was a life changing moment. 70 bucks buys a cracker.

Hi,

A good camping chair and a good (long tailed) warm jumper.

I find if I am not comfortable I will not enjoy the trip no matter what other toys I have on hand.

Bunyip.

P.S. a good chainsaw to cut firewood. After our last camping trip when someone had a chainsaw I went out and bought one. Took less than a 1/4 of the time to get enough wood.

I like my head torch as it lights up what's in front of you ... bit too bright for doing my journal, but when walking around it could be brighter.
I love my comfy camp chair.
I have lots of bits-n-bobs in the kitchen pantry to assist in the preparation of meals (although none are powered) ...  my favourite is a whisk & soft bowl scraper ... MUST HAVE is a decent kitchen knife.
I have a aluminium folding chair (oztrail) that I use as either a quick chair or a chair side "table" to hold drinks and things.
Our camp oven always goes with us, and we also have a tiny one for desserts.
Decent whistling kettle maybe?  Just melted the lid flipper thingie on mine.
Good durable bucket with lid.
Push button ignition stick for the gas stove.
Unbreakable "glass" for his Rum'n'coke.
Lid lifter for the camp oven - mine doubles as a plate remover on the OzPig / a fire poker / tent peg remover

* My cap with inbuilt leds .( combo : spot or reading or both ) .
* My roofers hammer , which has a spike on one side ( great for pulling out tent pegs .)
* Upgrade to a good chair ( for sure )
* A Hoe ( not one of those ) but from the kids garden tool section , great for fiddling with the fire and for dragging boxes out of the trailer.
* The silicon sheets for the BBQ .
* My cordless led light bar from Jetcrew.
* the tallest flag pole you can find ..... ;D

Do your homework on prices . Then a camp oven & a trivit for it  & a lifter . You can then cook well out there. A chair to sit on & if its cold a metal pan or dixie to use as a chair warmer . Place hot coals in pan then place it under your chair , nice warn chair seat
Has all this confused you yet  ???
You can go your own way . Treg Up & Make Dust
