Keyless start questions
« on: August 19, 2012, 08:37:41 AM »
Hi guys i am seriously looking at a 200 atm and cant decide between GX and GXL one thing i did notice is that the GXL has the keless start with the fob and push button (GX has the old key) so a couple of questions on keyless start

1 What happens if the battery in the fob runs out is there any sort of manual way to at least get in the car or start it

2 I do a lot of watersports is the fob waterproof what do people do with theirs etc (atm my prado has just a non electronic key i use for swimming)

3 Is there any sort of non electronic key on the 200 that would even just get me in the car (lock the fob inside)

I dint think thre is a such thing as a waterproof fob. I drowned mine awhile back(Prado). I can still use the key to open and lock. I dont know about the 200. I think if the battery dies on the fob you can still open the car and start it. Unless it is a push button jobby. I believe some cars have fuel shutoff with fob is activated so if battery is dead on fob the car doesnt start :-[

1. Toyota recommends holding fob next to start button, and the residual fob battery power will allow normal engine start.

2. No experience but I doubt it would be waterproof, or even water resistant.

3. The fob has a small metal key, which slides out of its slot in the fob, to provide traditional key access to the vehicle.

My Cruiser's a month short of three years old, and travelled 100,000 km. At one point earlier this year I thought the range of the fob was suspect so changed the batteries in both fobs. A painless solution and at no stage have I been locked out of my vehicle or been unable to start it.  As it happens, the reduced range turned out to be interference or shielding, caused when the fob and my iPhone were in the same pocket.

Before I took delivery if the Cruiser, I thought the keyless entry & starting was just a gimmick. But I've found it's a wonderful innovation. Walk to the car with hands full of shopping and no longer have to put the shopping down and fumble for a key, or a fob to press the unlock button. Simply grab the door handle and the vehicle unlocks. Press the brake pedal, push the start button and you're off. All of this with the fob sitting comfortably I your pocket.   ;D

Keyless start questions

Hi,

Wifey kindly washed my jeans without checking the pockets.

Amazingly my fob still has no issues after a full cycle in the washing machine!

As for keyless entry, its fantastic.

But you can't lock the fob in the car!!

The fob works with proximity so if it's close enough to the car then anyone can touch the handles and the doors open.

Another bonus is that I had the dealer re-program so  if I hold the lock button down it closes all windows and sunroof. Great if you have kids that always open windows.

Cheers

Dave

we have a 150 Prado GXL with Keyless entry.

Yes it is great, just another one of those little things that make life that little bit easier.

With the proximity for unlocking the car, you should note that the actual proximity to the car in order for it to work is about 1 mtr. I am always trying to open the door when hubby is standing close (and preoccupied by something else), but usually its just not close enough  >:(

So no need to worry that while your 4 meters away un hooking your camper someone is going to hop in and take off!

You can actually lock the fob in the car, provided you have two. When I used to carry the spare key I was always leaving it in the car (helpful I know) and when hubby would touch the handle to lock it would lock, beep and unlock. Then you press the lock button on the fob and it will stay locked even with the spare inside.
I ended up taking the spare off my keyring - I didnt appreciate being told on by the car and getting the Whhhhhyyyyy? look from hubby each and every time  >:D

If you do buy one, get them to throw in an extra key and fob.

The keys and fobs if they are like Nissan are poison expensive, and a Shitfight to get sorted if your not near your dealer.
