Exploding portable gas stoves
« on: August 13, 2012, 10:18:03 AM »
I'm sure you have all seen the sub $20 portable gas stoves they sell at Bunnings etc.

It seems that there have been a growing number of cases where these stoves are exploding when not used properly and in conjuction with the manufacturers operating instructions.

I was shocked when I just read on another CT forum that someone was using one as a heater with a frypan on top to act as a radiator!

There are numerous reports of these stoves exploding on the internet and if you search for "portable gas stove explosion" you will find plenty of incidents such as this one http://www.chemaxx.com/butane_explosion.htm

Yep, I blew up my 1st one by not turning over the spill pan, so the supports faced up  ::)
From what I/we figured, It made the canister not sealed properly. The spill pan heated up. When it was turned off, was enough movement to let some gas escape & BOOM!

I mean, who needs to look at the instructions? I'm a bloke  ;D

natural selection.

they are great until it gets cold.... like the high country..
I have a dozen 1/2 used cylinders at home that just froze when it got cold.

Ours has a lockout, so that you can't engage the gas cylinder unless the spill pan is the right way up.

So of course, every time I use it I spend 20 mins swearing and cursing the useless broken friggin' cooker, until I remember to turn the pan over...

Cheers!

It's surprising how much energy there is in those small 220gm cylinders.

The gas cans do go off well.  We use a small butane oven most nights for cooking (no domestic oven or stove), and I threw 8 "empty" cans into the rubbish, and did not tell my wife (whoops).   The wife put the rubbish into the 44 that we use as an incinerator, set the bin on fire and came inside.  There was suddenly a series of bangs, and not much incinerator left, and I was in the doghouse for several hours.

You do realise that thread has been dead for 3 years don't you?  ;D And used properly, there is no problem with the stoves.

Yeh, the only way the bottle explodes is it gets too hot.

If you use an appropriate size frypan, and double check the temp of the bottle ( with your hand ) , then it will be safe as !

But I'm not advertising using any of the banned ones...

Maybe if you put tins of paint in the incinerator before you burn the rubbish you'd get dot paintings??
