Respect people, we insist on it here. This thread is about a particular issue and not an opportunity to attack farmers generally, or to assert that farmers are carrying the nation.

Nope stalls of this type are banned in uk.
I think you need to read up on BSE and what caused it

Welcome to intensive pig farming. Remember that video the next time you have a pork chop or bacon. How exactly do you think they farm pigs? What about Chooks, they are the same.

Have any of you ever had anything to do with pig farms?
Yep CWK my both my nieghbours are Pig farmers they run a tidy outfit
you are not allowed in them unless you are dressed in disposable overalls where plastic boots and have a mask on i think it is
so they can prevent disease one of there workers who comes over here now and then is not allowed near our old piggery or he
cannot go back to work until he has been cleared , they have converted there sow pens into eco style sheds and from memory the farrowing stalls you seen on the video are being outlawed i think there is a certain date that they have to comply by
cheers

i remeber the uproar and not being able to buy a T-bone steak as it was thought any beef on the bone was the cause

You appear to have missed 3 important words IN CATTLE FEED which is precisely what I said, COWS DONT EAT MEET!! Greedy UK farmers were cutting corners and feeding cows any old **** they wanted - THIS caused the outbreak!!! I know I lived there at the time, as a result I can't be a blood donor in this country ( which I used to be) all because of the risk of BSE!!!

BTW the link works fine

oh good lord
MBM was and is still used around the world.
http://feedconferences.blogspot.com.au/2010/01/use-of-meat-and-bone-meal-in-animal.html

link is now working, and still the same. infected food.
whether the argument as to cattle eating meat is irrelevent. they were not just using any old crap as you say

i am done with this as you seem to think every farmer is a ass. well go and eat grass or grow your own.
till you do this you have no gripe with them. yes they may moan abit sometimes, we all moan a little when  trying to make a living, but without them, modern society is doomed

happy with mods to remove this if i have crossed the line, just sometimes it needs to be said

Now like i said  i do not support animal cruelty and there is good and bad everywhere and in every profession
and to slag off at or single out one is foolish and not fair we are all important cogs in the wheel from the stay at home mums to  doctors  etc
All getting off topic here but another thing that thing that comes to mind
now only 18 monthes ago when the floods where in QLD it only took a few days to stop the transport of food to major regional centres
shelves in the shops where getting low and people where witnessed fighting and arguing over loaves of bread cartons of milk fruit there was a lot of panic buying(from me to stocked up on beer ) now this did happen it is not a story might sound dramatic but imagine if Farmers / Primary Producers stopped supplying the whole country for say two weeks mate would be chaos bet you some people might have a different attitude then .
Anyway i have had enough of this topic gonna go read some trip reports that is what i like on this forum the best

cheers

I am curious as to why your link is talking about MBM as a food stuff for FISH, not cattle, they are herbivores ( look it up, perhaps Google 'cow')

I too am done with this...

British inquiry into BSE concluded the epizootic was caused by cattle, which are normally herbivores, being fed the remains of other cattle in the form of meat and bone meal (MBM), which caused the infectious agent to spread.

The video shows conventional pig farming. thats the way is has been done for years. Your neighbours must be aiming for a certain market, as normal HC pig farming is done in conditions as above.

I dont condone this kind of farming, however thats the way it is. Not all animals have the chance to be kissed prior to there slaughter.

My wifes family owned and run a pig farm for 20+ years and i worked on my uncles pig farm for a while, so this video doesnt shock me.

What realy shocks me is that people have noidea what happens behind the scenes. I think its great we are moving toward a better method, however we need the big 2 (coles,ww) to pay better meaning the farmer can move away from this style and into a more sustaniable and humane method (eco shelter etc)

I was listening to journalists on ABC702. It came to light that the peak pork marketing organisation beleived that particular piggery was shutting 5 years ago, and that they had been operating under the radar. The several journalists expressed their revulsion but also that they beleived this and the similar cases reported in the last few years were the exceptions.

Once more, this thread is about one farm, not all pig farmers, farmers or anyone else. Please keep on topic or the thread will be closed.

Very Sad indeed. Hopefully the bastard pig farmer with the sledge hammer has whats coming to him... This has made me extremely angry and wish our laws can really make these people pay, but unfortunatley a slap on the wrist is probably all they get.
