Seal Pup on BRIBIE ISLAND!!!!
« on: August 05, 2012, 06:01:20 PM »
Gday My Swaggers,
I finished an afternoon fishing session on Bribie Island about 4:30 pm yesterday afternoon. Packed up and started heading home after catching a nice 37cm Bream and a feed of diver Whiting. In the distance travelling south along the beach it looked like there was a burnt stump on the waters edge, having a closer look it turned out to be a Seal....... That's right a SEA LION on BRIBIE ISLAND... I've been fishing this beach for over 15 years and never have I seen a seal here before. Friendly little thing. We stopped to take photos and stood a good distantce away thinking we would scare it away, not this little fella he or she (my kids name him/her Ceilio ) came right up within a meter before It rolled on its back like a dog. Unbelievable, i couldn't believe what was happening. We continued to stay watching it from the veichle from a distance. About 1/2 hour later it took off and started swimming, rolling around and just being playfull. I contacted Sea World this morning and reported it and they
took all the necessary information, there biggest concern was the condition of the animal. From what I could see it looked a lot  like me... well rounded .

Anyway I thought i would share this as I was impressed and thought others might be too

that seal must have been hanging out there most of the day, we were looking at pics lastnight that a friend had posted up on Facebook of the same seal there Saturday morning.

It wasn't there from about 11am onwards as we fished from the top of the tide to the turn of the tide driving up and down the beach looking for suitable gutters. Probably sleeps on the beach and heads out during the day for a fish and back again at dusk.

We encounted one on Fraser island last year up at waddy point he hung around for 2 days. After a phone call to underwater world to inform them they had been tracking it for weeks up the coast.

Great photo Jav6.  The kids would've loved it.
You should've thrown it a tennis ball and see if it 'fetched'.

That's really cool Jav6. As has been said, the kids must have loved it.

I would have been tempted to crab the little fella and take him/her home with me. He's certainyl very cute. I think he/she would have no troubles bringing our dogs into line.

Very cool!

...and perhaps my comments better belong on another thread...
I would suggest you're right. No one likes "that guy" at the party who hijacks someone else's story to go off on a personal rant about the government putting fluoride in the water, or how meat is murder. Doesn't mean you can't have those views, just maybe be a bit more circumspect as to when and where you let the dog off the leash. Discretion being the better part of valour, and all that.

And while I'm being pedantic:
One thing the real villains know only too well is that digital images (in particular cctv footage) is of no concern.
Speaking as someone who is somewhat involved in the legal industry, I can assure you that there are multiple times in a day where CCTV footage is relied upon in our organisation, and hence in the courtroom. And not even good quality CCTV footage - you take what you can get.

And now I'll bow out, so as not to derail this train-wreck even further. And to think, it all started with some cute photos of a baby seal...

Cheers!
Matto :)

Half on me says it’s great seals are around, but the other half says dam as Bribie is a great swimming spot for the kids. Seeing sharks love eating seal, hope they don’t plan on making Bribie home!!  There must be a few around at the moment as I say some photo’s of some resting on the rocks at Straddie a couple of weeks ago.

PS - Great photo and like you I would have done the same thing by taking photos.

That is awesome. I spent a bit of time at Bribie Island on the holidays back when I was a young fella. I can tell you that I never saw any seals.

What is the track on to the beach like at the moment?  I'm thinking of going over for the day on Sunday and taking the kids for a drive on the beach!

Sorry for such a late reply Nug613,

I don't think you would have gone yesterday because of the wind, but if you decide to go this comming weekend the track to the beach is in very good condition, not chopped up at all. I went over there last wednesday for a fish and it was still good then.

Hope you get over there soon if you haven't already been, really nice place to go at this time of year whilst it's not so busy.

I did go on the Sunday. The wind wasn't as bad as expected. Next time I will stick to the beach. Got stuck twice on the inland track. ????
