Roma Cruza X vs Jayco Swan

So the fam and I went to the Toowoomba Outdoor Adventure Expo today to check out potential campers (in particular the Jayco Swan Outback) and was quite impressed with the selection of Campers on display.  One trailer that caught the eye was the Roma Cruza X which seems like a direct knock off of the Swan but the spec sheet does reveal a few differences in terms of length, weight etc. I asked the sales person what the differences were between the two and they said that:

- Roma was hand built rather than mass produced (not that this means much to me)
- Roma has a 500kg load rating on the roof( though the trailer only has 300kg of payload so this seems irrelevant but could be handy)
- their big claim to fame though was that the Roma had fibreglass under the gelcoat whereas the Jayco only had timber under the Gelcoat which was inferior (obviously I have no way to prove this and even if I did I'm not sure if it's better or not)
- though price was similar the Roma comes with roof racks and a roll out awning as standard.

Anyone know anything about the Roma and how they compare to the Jaycos?

Purely from a resale perspective I'd go the Jayco, guaranteed to get your money back when you upgrade.

500kg on the roof sounds a lot.

Don't know the 'crusa' intimately,but I do know my dads Roma caravan. Personally, I would say go the jayco, without a doubt.
my dads caravan has sent more time in the repair shop than they have actually used it.

With the consumer affairs involved, its not just a simple (couple) of fix.

 The factory shrugged their shoulders, the dealer shrugged shoulders, they all gave a million promises.
don't touch a ROMA.

I have no problem with speaking out about Roma, ina negative way, I've seen the way they've treated my dad. And its disgusting!!

Wow, that's probably just scared me off Roma.....I know Jayco seems to have plenty of quality control issues but I never hear people saying that Jayco and it's dealers don't come to the party!

Hi jasman, yes jayco have quality issues but they have after sales service and a warranty to back it up. My new swan had issues that I bright to the attention of jayco at its first service, they fixed all issues and some with no questions asked. Value for money you cannot beat.

A biased jayco swan owner  ;D

I would like to stick up for the Roma boys in Camblefeild. I bought a Roma Caravan in December last year, had a could of little issues door handle faults, no problems in getting them replaced. The other good thing was i could go and have a look at the thing getting built at many times i wanted to. I have always found the guys in Camblefield  easy to deal with and any issue  is not a problem. Its sounds like buying a camper/caravan is the same as buying a car when you get a lemon nobody wants to know about it. I have read Roma has had issues in the past on other caravan forums but i believe the guys responsible are no longer there.  In saying that do the research and take your time .

Hi Jasman, I have no idea about Roma caravans or campers, so can't comment on the quality. However I can vouch for the after sales service for Jayco. Considering our Swan was trashed during its 1st service by the local Jayco service agent in Tbar who also happens to be the Roma dealership I would not want anyone to go through what I did with them with my brand new van. Thank god Jayco stepped up and are fixing everything that the local service agent broke, scratched, dented, put grease on etc etc

The Roma sounds like the Golf we looked at at the Sydney show. I liked the one piece moulded roof of the Golf but then I looked at the way they attached the baged ends and the awning and general fittings. Bought the Swan

Also was concerned at Jayco reputation for repairs and noted the posts over the past few years really were very positive. Some negative but overall very good.

Interesting feedback Sicillianmama.  I'm also in Toowoomba so interesting to get the feedback on the locals to avoid, I can't stand sloppy workmanship that screws up my stuff.  I've been pricing up Jayco's in the last week and I reckon that's the way we'll go.

When we sold our Swan we were swamped with buyers.  Even had a buyer wanting to go into ANZ, transfer 1k into our account and drive down from the NW to pick it up that day.

Sold within 2 days of advertising.

Quality is sus, but not too bad.

As far as service goes....we just had a Fiamma awning fitted to our Eagle by Jayco Newcastle.
One of the guys realised after we had left that they hadn't fitted a weather strip. A guy from Jayco came to our house today to fit it! We didn't even realise there was anything missing until they rang and we didn't have to drop it in! Service!
