ok what's better for keeping the dust out?

Hi all,
we're heading off on tuesday, and thought I'd ask the question ....... what's better for keeping the dust out? front vent open or closed? with windows up and aircon on.

We travelled it last year and had the vents closed and windows up. Also keeping a good distance between you and the car in front helps to. But you won't stop it all.

As Daz says windows up, air cond on and get out of the dust not only for better visibility and safety so other drivers can see you. Drive with headlights on all the time and even high beam sometimes.

If you have a camper make sure the seals are are good but you will get some dust in.

Not sure what the GQ is like but in an old Land Rover you just accept it will be dusty inside the cabin :laugh:.

If you are at the front of the pack I would have the vent open and the air con on.  That way it pressurises the cabin and stops dust ingress.

If you are second or worse vent closed ... obviously.

Stay out of dust of car in front - that's obvious!

Windows up - windows down causes vacuum in the cabin that sucks dust in around the rear door

Vent open - Do NOT use recirc as this will pull dust in through the rear door(s) as there are leaks everywhere in a vehicle cabin (via wiring harnesses, door handles etc) that create a vacuum within the cabin

A/C- up to you; makes no difference as long as that front vent is open (unless the car has a default 'recirc' setting when the A/C is switched on

No car is dustproof and yes you will get dusty...you just got to minimise it

We have just done the Cape with McGirr. We were generally middle of the group, eating someone's dust.  We drove exclusively with a/c on and recirc off. Very little dust in the car.

thanks guys, yep I'm going to get dust in, I know that she's far from dust proof and yep plan to have lights on and avoid travelling in others dust. just wanted to make sure I was on the right track with the vent.

Just don't break a back window with no plastic or duct tape handy. Sweet Jesus I'm still trying to get the stuff out so I don't get nicked for not having the proper truck licence.

It's the Cape.  By the end of day two you'll be so used to chewing on red dust you just won't even notice.

Open the windows, turn off the AC, keep some distance from the leading vehicle and enjoy the view, that’s what I do! When I get home I open the doors, blow out the interior then hose out the truck. It works a treat.

When we drive the PDR we have aircon on and on fresh. This seals the back door so don't smell the dust. When we pass a vehicle the front passenger flicks to recirc then back to fresh. Works for us but I don't know anything about patrols. :)
