Took my girlfriend at the time, now my goodwife,to the drive-in in bussleton WA, about 8 years ago.
Don't know if its still there or not, don't even remember what movie was showing.
It was a great night, kicking back in the front seats, radio tuned into the right station, no noise from people talking, no kids kicking the back of the seat, making out during the boring bits,it was great fun!
Sadly, very few drive ins around nowadays.
Why do people ask "What the hell were you thinking?"
Obviously I was thinking I was going to get away with it and not have to explain it....

Took the kids and friends to the drivein during the school holidays in the new challenger.
Folded the seats up and put matresses down.  We fit 5 kids aged 3 - 10 and 1 adult (to keep the peace) in the boot.  The rest of us just had our camp chairs around.  Was a great night.

I often wondered why drive ins started closing down - are they that costly to run?  I used to go to the Gladstone one almost every weekend and it was always at least a third to half full, even with crappy movies.

We used to back the ute in with a mattress in the back to sit on, you could watch the movie or lie back and gaze at the stars.  Good times.
Do not PM me for technical advice - start a thread.

land value..

Quote

http://www.drive-insdownunder.com.au/editorial/currenteditorial.htm

What was once cheap outer suburban land on the fringes of towns and cities soon became future shopping centres and housing estates. The multiplex boom that continues today also convinced exhibitors to move capital back into more profitable indoor theatres. The closure and sale of a moderately profitable drive-in could finance the construction of an indoor venue that could realise ten times the revenue of the drive-in. Many drive-ins that have closed since the late 1980s have been worthwhile ventures, but a small trading surplus is peanuts compared to land worth ten million dollars.

We will never again see the proliferation of outdoor theatres contributing a large percentage of box-office revenue, but the 700-odd drive-ins worldwide will continue to entertain patrons and will become an icon of any era in which they survive.

Love the Drive-In ... last one I went to was a 3 movie night at Yatala.  Took the girls with me, a lollie jar, lots of cushions, blankets and pillows.  I used to own a van then, so the seat came out and the door went up!  What a blast.  Been to one on the northside as well, but used to go to the one at Maroochydore ... Wises Road I think ... with all my mates from school and work ... those were the days.  Lucky for us, one of the boys mum owed the drive-in so we all got in for 1/3 price.

My 6 year still hates the cinemas because they're too scary and loud but loves the drive-in. It's about an hour from us but we try to go every school holidays.

THE BEST Drive-in  night I ever had..
Caboolture Drive-in, a summer's night
Rocky Horror Picture Show was the main movie and we saw it against a backdrop of a lightning storm way out on the bay

I remember that some of the boys would idle around with the choke out to make their cars sound like they had a big cam in it.

The good old days. Panel vans , girls and drive in's.  :cup:

One of the best nights was watching "Up in Smoke "

There was a strange smell around the area. Still can't remember how I drove home  ;D

We use to do that, except, we did have a f*@king big cam in it. ;D

A few years back, a group of us went to the Yatala drive-in on motorbikes. we borrowed nearly every chair from the cafe and set ourselves up with the rest of the plebs. was a hoot....

I was only talking to the wife about taking the kids to Yatala the other day.
I loved the dusk to dawns at Aspley when it was running.
It was also the first thing I done when I got my licence.... Although I think that was at Mt Waverley.

Ended up at Dromana.. surprised its got 3 screens, but the place is nowhere near as big as teh one back home used to be with 1 screen.
Bit run down the place, but the shop is 50's style, and pretty cool. :)

Each section (or field they call it) holds round 80 cars... there were about 15-20 last night to see hotel transylvania.. was not bad..  5/10

Will head there again, kids loved it.

I remember sneaking people in to the drivein at Mareeba in the boot of the car!!

Wow the adrenalin used to pump!!

hahaha  thems were the days!!

Yes we did the same thing at the same place but they hid under the mattress in the back of the XB Falcon Panelvan.  He still has the van down the back shed, and we now live about 500 meters away from the drivein ;D cheers rellbell

My earliest memory was going to the drivein with a girl friend and her big sister was driving we were lined up down the highway for probably a Kilometer waiting to see GREASE.  Well after what seemed like ages we made it to the gate, and they closed it in front of us.  We had to walked in and watched the movie from on top of the canteen.  The place was packed out.

The other best memory, was the Midnight to Dawn,  Monty Python Trilogy, Some young fellas in a green gemini were hanging out down the main street of Mareeba, waiting for midnight, and they decided to follow a car load of girls also loitering down town. Long story short I met the fellas the next weekend and married one of them a few years later.  It turns out the other two in the car were my third cousins.  Small world.  Cheers Rellbell

The good ol' drive-in...Chulora, Bass Hill, Fairfield, Blacktown (everyone wanting/hunting/borrowing/begging for a Bettle for a special screening when Herbie came out  :D  )

Showing off to the girl with me in the line up to enter Chullora. Popped the clutch in my HQ Van...snapped 1 axle & twisted the other She went & got in a mate's car, wouldn't even help me push it off the road  ::)
She'd warmed back up by the end of the night, & stayed with me in the van to make sure no one stole it ;)
Mate upped me the next day, he wasn't happy about having extra's in his car for the night  >:D

Before that was the one in just north of Adelaide back in '83.

That would be Gepps Cross - and it is still in use!!  We went there last year which was the first time for me in about 20 years!!

Years ago I was living in Tooronga and there was a drive in just up the road ( where Myers head quarters are now), anyway 4 of the guys I was boarding with were deaf & dumb, and 1 night they told me they were going to the drive in & did I want to go, so muggins me said yes.
B*****ds parked in Toorak road , they could lip read the show while I didn't have a clue what was being said, pr**ks  ;D ;D
That was the first drive-in in Melbourne.
