How long till Woolies buys Parliment??
« on: July 13, 2012, 01:19:19 PM »
So now they want to control the pubs with the blessing of the ACCC. :'(
Haven't the ACCC learnt anything with the fuel monopoly, and bottle shops... and... whats next?

Woollies buys Gymea Hotel

BY SANDRA SIAGIAN

11 Jul, 2012 01:11 PM

GYMEA Hotel was one of six hotels snapped up by Woolworths on Monday night, after the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission gave them the green light to go ahead with the $125 million sale from the Waugh family and the de Angelis group.

The ACCC also granted Woolworths and the Laundy family the right to create a $500 million joint venture with the leasehold of an initial 30 pubs last week. Those assets will be owned through Woolworths’ subsidiary Australian Leisure and Hospitality. ALH will lease the hotels with the Laundy family continuing to be the owner of the freeholds.

Ray White Hotels director Andrew Jolliffe has been negotiating on behalf of the vendors for more than 12 months and said it was the most significant commercial pub acquisition since the Fosters portfolio was purchased by ALH almost a decade ago.

The planned sale of Caringbah Inn is one of five properties still under review by the ACCC, which is concerned about competition issues with Woolworths.

Welcome to Queensland mate.

Woolies and Coles have been buying pubs in Queensland for years to allow them to get around the fact that Qld law does not allow the sale of booze in supermarkets.

So, they buy the Pubs and then use the 3 or 4 automatic licences for off-site bottleshops to open up a liquorland, Grape, Dan Murphies, whatever close to their supermarket.

It also has the unfortunate side effect that, between them, they are the largest holders of gaming machine licences in the state.

Not a great outcome as far as I can tell.

Caringbah Inn, had some massive concerts in my teen years... all the top 80's bands. Angels, ACDC, Spys, Midnight Oil, Sunnyboys, Hoodoo's and dozens more... $10 would get you into 2-3 top bands a night.. the room fitted a whole 50 people LOL! Then again, a slab of beer was <$10 back then...

I'm just sick of being lubed up the ginger by these companies controlling the planet with the blessing of the pissant Shit worthless gov dept that is supposed to save us... And theres ****ing zot any of us can do.

Once they own everything, our pay will just be directed into their accounts, and we will be given Basics cards owned and controlled by them...

Hey, Lost, "lubed up the ginger" is an excellent, inventive phrase and very accurate about what is happening with the Coles/Woolies monopoly.

I've added it to my vocabulary and will give you a byline!

Now let's see the banks make billions, the mining magnets makes billions and woolworths and Coles makes millions. Better keeping most of the money in Australia or why not sell it all to china and then we would not have to import anything as we would be working for $5 a day for the factories making cheap camper trailers, shoes, diff lockers, etc

I am just jealous I don't own any of the companies.

Not sure how anyone could, with a clean conscience, buy Woolies shares.

No chance here. About 50 years ago a Woolies buyer threatened my old man. Sell to us at this price or we will break you. I think the buyer was lucky to leave the property alive. There wasn't much of Dad, but he was as strong as a bullock.

Hard to avoid buying goods from a company with decent standards at the moment.

Coles and Woolies are the largest real estate developers in Australia at present. They are also the fifth and sixth largest banks, think about it in our country....According to Brian White, CEO of Ray White, Woolies have just completed a $400m deal for 30 odd pubs..............

and that is their plan with everything..

I dont really know how some farmers and some suppliers are making a living with the pittance they are being forced to accept but our saviour the ACCC calls it
"competitive competiton which is good for the consumer"  ??? ??? ??? ??? ???
Look what McCains tried to do with the Potato farmers. It was something like the farmers wanted 50-$1/ton more, McCains offered them 10% less.
Thus why I dont buy anythin of theirs anymore. Thus why they have their "SWEET POTATO" chips instead...

edit: Not the thing I was lookin for, but the idea.

"Haven't the ACCC learnt anything with the fuel monopoly.."
Well after 10 or so enquiries coming to the same conclusion you'd think the ACCC would have worked out by now fuel retailing is a very competitive game particularly in the metro areas. If you don't get that then try explaining why on earth the retailers ever drop their prices. Go on tell me they've got a wicked sense of humour.
It's like this. For competitive pricing all you need as a necessary and sufficient condition is that there be free entry into the marketplace aka Aldi, IGA, etc. It has nothing whatsoever to do with the number of suppliers that actually eventuate with their respective market shares. Just like air fares when the original two airline-TAA and Ansett duopoly was ultimately torn up and we ended up with cheap airfares and basically 2 main carriers anyway. There are a still few sad Compass fans left moaning and groaning about the place by all accounts.

"How long before Woolies own Parliament?"

What makes you think they don't already ?

The Libs/Nats are "owned" by big business
Labor is owned by the Unions
the Greens are owned by the loony left

the only one that I have any time for is Tony Windsor, and he isn't in my electorate :(

"The number of independents is going down by about 5 per cent a year . . .
It's getting tougher and tougher. In Sydney alone, we've lost one every month this year."
Once they are gone, the faeces goes deep.

Sadly it isnt being investigated by anybody independent. Coles may as well investigate Woolies and VV.

Good interview on tele this morning with Ross Greenwood, there were over 10,000 complaints about fuel companies in the last 6 mths I think he said out of those 10,000 complaints 0 were investigated by the ACCC. Had kids yelling as he was saying it, cant find it on the today website either  >:(
Says everything about the ACCC.

ACCC eyes clamp on shopper-docket petrol discounts
by: BLAIR SPEEDY
From:The Australian
July 18, 2012 12:00AM

DEEP petrol discounts of up to 40c a litre are under threat, with the competition regulator launching an investigation into the fuel price wars estimated to save motorists about $400 million a year.

The Australian Competition & Consumer Commission is seeking detailed information from Coles and Woolworths about their popular "shopper-docket" schemes.

In 2007, an ACCC petrol inquiry report found the schemes benefited consumers and promoted competition. However, it is understood the regulator is now concerned about the expansion of the schemes, which generally reward supermarket shoppers with a 4c a litre price reduction if they spend more than $30 in Coles or Woolworths supermarkets but increasingly feature discounts of up to 30c a litre.

ACCC Petrol Commissioner Joe Dimasi in 2009 ruled that 40c-a-litre discounts offered by Coles and Woolworths for a three-day period were not anti-competitive, but the commission has received a number of complaints about similar discounts being made available for longer periods and with increasing regularity.

While the ACCC does not have the power to ban the discounts, an adverse finding - carrying an implied threat of legal action for behaviour identified as anti-competitive - would be likely to see the retailers scrap the higher discounts, effectively capping the savings on offer at 4c a litre.

Neither Coles nor Woolworths would comment on the ACCC investigation, while the regulator would confirm only that the probe was under way.

"The ACCC is currently seeking further information to assess the impact on competition arising from the current approach by participants to the level and frequency of their shopper-docket discounts," an ACCC spokeswoman said.

Coles is offering members of its Flybuys loyalty card scheme a discount of 16c a litre on fuel if they spend $160 in one transaction; in March, Woolworths offered a 20c-a-litre discount to shoppers spending at least $150.

Between them, the two supermarket giants account for about 50 per cent of national petrol sales despite controlling only 18 per cent of the petrol stations by number through their alliances with Shell and Caltex. If all of those sales were made at a 4c-a-litre discount, the savings to shoppers would be about $400m.

Colin Long, senior manager of the Service Station Association, representing smaller fuel retailers, said he was pleased the ACCC was investigating a practice "that unfairly disadvantaged independent operators".

"We think it's an unfair advantage that supermarkets have, because they're getting it back in their other grocery lines in terms of increased grocery prices, and giving it back with the other hand while decimating the independent fuel retailers," he said.

"The number of independents is going down by about 5 per cent a year . . . It's getting tougher and tougher. In Sydney alone, we've lost one every month this year."
Automobile Association of Australia executive director Andrew McKellar also cheered news of the probe.

"This needs to be investigated - nobody would say that if you're getting a discount, you shouldn't make use of it, but the concern we have is whether these dockets are being used as a device to effect competition, which would mean in the longer term there's a risk that consumers pay a higher price," he said.

"That is anti-competitive conduct and would be illegal. Shoppers using shopper dockets is perfectly rational but . . . there are trade-offs when supermarkets offer these sorts of loyalty programs."

Matt Levey from consumer lobby group Choice said while fuel discounts were good for shoppers, any impact on overall competition should be addressed. "We're not against petrol discounting - if the ACCC found there was a consumer detriment, we'd want them to take appropriate action - but we certainly wouldn't be calling for them to be abolished," he said.

Not the consumers complaining but Coles and Woollies competitors no doubt.

So many enquiries and so many eggsperts who don't produce or distribute so much as a drop of fuel. Pick me pick me! I'll run all the enquiries you like on those Canberra fat cat salaries and conditions folks and my door will always be open to all you disgruntled Coles/Woollies/ Compass/Ansett/ACTU Solo/etc/etc fans. I'll even run Fuelwatch, Grocerywatch, Beerwatch, Smokewatch, Wageswatch and whatever else you want me and my fatcat Departmental mates and cronies to watch for you. But I'll leave you lot to watch our Dept and salaries grow.
