Alloy trailers..thoughts.
« on: July 01, 2012, 04:53:38 AM »
OK, i'm new here, so don't yell at me if this has been asked before.

I've stumbled across a second hand alloy camper trailer. He believes it's an older Thommo's brand? but wasn't 100% sure.
I haven't seen it yet, as we were drinking on the back of his boat when the subject came up and he said he's only used it twice etc and at this point, no price has been mentioned, but he did say what he paid for it and i'm thinking it might a good buy if he's sensible about it and i think he would be.

What are the pro's and con's in an alloy trailer? I know the weight factor is a given, so fuel consuption will be less thana steel or gal, but what should i be aware of?

Cheers and thanks in advance.

What about plastic trailers?
Polymate, mate!

Guaranteed never to rust!!
Why do people ask "What the hell were you thinking?"
Obviously I was thinking I was going to get away with it and not have to explain it....

Seeing we do a lot of beach camping I went down the alloy due to less weight when pulling a lighter trailer up sand tracks and the rust factor.

When I asked the same question 4 years ago I was told the cons are they are more brittle than steel and harder to weld if something breaks. But in saying that boats and truck trailers have been made from alloy for years, so it must have something going for it.

I ended up going alloy and I’m happy with my choice.

My $0.02:

Pros:
* Lighter weight
* do not rust

Cons:
* By the time you put a canvas tent on top, ~100kg of water underneath, fill the toolbox with crap and the camper with chairs, tables, beds, campovens, etc - my gut feeling is that the weight is going to end up very similar between the two.
* the alloy won't rust, but it's probably got a galvanised steel drawbar. Steel axle & hubs. etc etc etc. Bit like saying a Defender won't rust because the body is alloy, where the frame is still steel.
* Harder to modify yourself / weld / etc.
* alloy (in my mind anyway) is prone to fatiguing over corrugations, etc, if not properly built and braced.

I like alloy campers, I would quite happily have a Jimboomba, as Beachman has. I am not adverse to them. BUT, at the end of the day, I wouldn't be drawn to alloy for the usual reasons (light weight), because I don't think there's a sompelling argument for it. On the same hand though, if I was looking at a camper and it was :
* the design I wanted
* the canvas layout I wanted
* the price I wanted
* the everythign else I wanted

Then the fact it was alloy or steel would count for a very small percentage of my choice. That's just me. If I were in your shoes, and this camper looked like it ticked all my boxes and was a good price to boot, I'd be there in no time.

Good luck!
Matto :)

Would not buy one, on principle of them having the WORST AD EVER.

Cheers!

OK, so no real drawbacks with alloy then.

Just gotta wait now and see how much he wants for it. We're gunna be on the grog together on the week-end, so i might ask him for price at about 22 beers past midnight.

Hi Jeppers, I bought an ally camper, 2006 model Outback Deluxe made by Challenge Campers in S.Aust about 2 mths ago. Been too cold and wet to use it yet over here in WA and I have been making mods to suit my needs. We will be going to Coral Bay in Sept so it will get a good work out then.
The unloaded weight is 400kgs and loaded is 750kgs. the light weight and no rust attracted me to buy it. Since buying it I have found a couple of cracked welds but not a fault of the ally but the welds themselves not being up to scratch.
I will be taking with me some heavy angle just in case problems arise but it's not a Simpson Desert trip.
Welding ally out in the bush or even small towns is the only downside I can see.

Very well made camper too.

We didn't get on the grog yet, as the wind picked up, the rain came in and the boats stayed moored.

Should find out soon but.
