How do I justify....
« on: June 24, 2012, 10:42:59 PM »
The difference between a 2001 and a 2009 Jayco Swan Outback to my wife?
Our recent hire of a Jayco has confirmed we want one.. But now it is budget time..

You can't, the first alloy framed outback ones with the old lap join sides were better I reckon ;D

You can only afford what you can afford (am I making sense ?)  or No use breaking the budget then not being able to afford to put fuel in the car to tow it on the adventures it deserves.

Get something is value for money to you.  If you're handy with modifications then why not get something that needs a few fixups that are within your capability.  A CT that needs a cleanup and detail is pretty easy to do and may let you get a newer model.

If you've hired one then you've taken the best step as you know what you liked.  There may be some options you can do without or add at your leisure later.  Did you hire a 2009 or 2001 ?

Otherwise, follow the concepts from another great thread 'What didn't your Mrs know about a modification' http://myswag.org/forum/index.php?topic=23162.0

Thanks guys. Yes, we know what we want and we have hired a 2010 and also borrowed a 2002 Eagle, so we have seen varying scales of age.
I intent to do some mods as I love the DIY and my Prado build is a small testament to it.
How should I put this, I am good at slightly misinforming SWMBO on what i need to do an why, but actual outlay of the camper is more or lesson her hands.
We do have a budget, but they differ.... I will not be spending so much on the camper that we can't afford to take it anywhere, but I get your point.
Outlaying for an older camper, that may need a few 'upgrades' may be the way togo.

Once again, she has mentioned the Datsun 1600 exhaust and extractors, so I know I'm hitting the right buttons :)

MD,

Easy answer - you don't. Not every decision needs to be justified beyond "I just want one". Heck - that's the only way they sell HSVs.

When we bought our camper, it was a surprisingly boring decision. Both J and I sat down, talked about the merits of brand new vs second hand (knowing it would mean more time to save), and them simply agreed that it was worth it. Then we went to see Johnny, and spent more again ;P.

Of course, the other way is simply to pull a swift one and organise both your divorce, and your funeral.

As a Datto 1600 owner, I know you have good taste in cars, I assume just as good in Mrs'.

Cheers!
Matto :)

If your going to modify it to suit yourself, why not buy the cheaper one, and put the 1000's towards mods...

I'll take the contrary position. Whilst I also enjoy doing the mods, they're not as much fun as using the camper, and are often solo endeavours whereas camping is with the whole family.

Get the finished one and get out there.

The critical thing is the condition of the canvas/etc because you can spend around $4-5k on quality replacement, whereas a few dents and scratches, new brake shoes, wheel bearings or tyres are not a big deal.
There's no Great Evil conspiracy against consumers within engineering, manufacturing and supply. Just the many tradeoffs incurred to satisfy diverse tastes, priorities and wallets. But first comes all the insatiable Gummint eggsperts, nanny-staters and usual suspects.

Im with you BigJules.

When it came to budget discussions of our recent CT purchase all of those things were taken into consideration. I am pretty handy and could have done a large amounts of the Mods myself but it came down to value for time and money. When I added up my time it was going to cost to much.

Do we wish to give up more weekends while im doing mods and go out in a camper half done, or did we wish to have it ready to use from the get go. We decided to spend the extra coin and get something complete with any mods done by the manufacture (also good as it means its under their warranty).

Also it was easier to convince the minister for War and Finance that spending the extra strait up means she wont have to wait 12mnths for her kitchen etc etc :D

Well, in the end, it ended up being what was best at the time. It came down to two.
a 2009 Swan Outback or a 2007 Flamingo Outback.
Due to the condition of the canvas and other bits, the Flamingo won hands down, even though it was older and had less in it (no hot water, roof racks etc) it was in much better condition.

Thanks for your help and advice, good people of My Swag ;)
