New tyre and rims
« on: June 24, 2012, 09:38:21 AM »
Morning all
Straight forward answer please. Should I stick with my standard size 265/70/16 rims on the new Toyota Workmate or go up a size or two to 17 or 18? Should I go muddies or ATs? Currently have ProComp AT on Prado and love them. Not interested in huge tyres, just your everyday run of the mill daily drive and yearly trip to the CSR or Cape type tyres. Oh and occasional trip to the high country.
Will going up a size affect the vehicle to the point that I have to have some mod done to it? Thanks all.

In the bush 17's are getting more common, 18's no chance, stick with the 16's. Any LT AT should get you where you want to go and back. Do a deal with a tyre place and drive it straight there on delivery and get them swapped. I assume it comes with Dunlops standard...

ATs in 285/75R16 are excellent. That is 33" in old money. Plenty of width, high side walls and easy to get. Bigest bonus is they're cheaper to buy upfront. Forget going with a larger wheel size, IMHO it would be an absolute waste of money, for the life of the vehicle.

Just check that you don't have to lift it to fit 33's under unless you are going to go down that path, you also lose a bit of poke

It will have at least a 2inch lift so will 33s fit?

G day donuts.

My work vehicle is a V8 TD Work mate. It has 16 inch steel rims fitted and we use the standard 265 70 R16 tyres size. These are cheaper and available just about any where. Our ute is fitted permanently with an Obieco service body (same as telstra) and has two spares on the rear. We rotate through the 6 tyres and don't replace them before the vehicle is traded in at about 80k.

Ours has a 2inch 3700kg GVM upgrade under it. The thing goes every where, probably places that fully pimped versions never would. This one is owned by the Govt, is used for patrol work by various individuals, who are hard on vehicles.

I have found no limitations with the standard set up, if its aesthetics your after then that is a different storey. As it would definitely look better with bigger rubber.

Regards

No,need tyres that will do the job. Yes I do want it to look good as well, so maybe 285 on a nice set of black alloys or get the original alloys sprayed.

Wayne-o,

33's (285/75R16) will rub especially with no lift. I'd be definitely going 265/75R16 (just under 32") will fit fine and you can get most brands in an LT construction in that size too

Cheaper...
I'm still tempted but Rego and Insurance on the GU this mth have decimated my saving plan.
1 at fault claim in 25 years for a walloping 2000 (was told 6000 or I wouldnt have bothered), I'm now considered a bigger criminal than Charles Manson+Martin Bryant+Woo Bum-Kon in the eyes of the insurance company.
