G'day to all.
So here is my dilema. I want a capable off road camper with multiple bedding (2 adults, not related, and 2 kids). I HATE inside kitchens but need something with room and easy and hassle free to put up as I have a serious back injury. Due to the injury I also need to use a decent mattress not just foam.
What I want:
1. seperate sleeping for two adults and two kids.
2. off road capable
3. less than 1200kgs
4. must have room for proper inner spring mattress
5. outside kitchen
6. easy to set up

Id love a jurgens stargazer or Echo top of the line but who has that money.

I was thinking of buying a jayco/coleman lift up camper (beds at each end) and having mods done to modify to an outside kitchen and engel fridge slide out.

Feel free to add your comments on my idea. Does anyone do extensive camper mods, or am i 'dreaming'.

Thanks guys and girls.

You could always carry a weber Q and one of those gas canister stoves to cook on outside. You would have the fridge in the camper and could have another one in your vehicle. That would save you some money from conversions.

The LifeStyle Adventure Trek is what you've just described. Bed inside, kitchen outside. They're a little cheaper than the Jurgens or Echo campers, but only a little.

Have you had a look at the Modcon forward fold campers?  I'm sure they had a version with a Queen & 2 single beds. I can't see it on the website but that may just be me. ??? Price??

I have a bad back as well and went with a Latex mattress instead of innerspring as the size difference to cater for my back was nearly 100%.
My budget didn't stretch to a fancy van either so instead went with a standard camper and very good mattress.
The only budget concession I was allowed by SWMBO is a hydraulic boat loader so there is no lifting at all.
Cheers,
Ross

Strak Shak folds out to include 2 Queen beds and the kitchen comes out and you set it up outside. Not sure how well that would suit your back though.

Jimboomba used to have a camper with two single beds and a walkway up the middle. As far as I know it isnt part of their stock range anymore but they do still do customs.

Then there is the camprite trailer which folds out to have one double bed and two singles, the singles can be used as bunks.

Have a look at the DRIFTA kitchens, he does some good units.

Have a look at the Camel Safari, a copy of the modcon front fold,it appealed to us more than the modcon don't know why.

Thanks guys.

I may need to elaborate a bit from my original post. it is two adults (not related) and two kids. I travel with my son and another father and his son to about 14 sporting events every year plus another 5 or 6 camp trips. I really dont want to share a bed with my mate. Hes a good mate BUT not that GOOD!!

I was thinking along the lines of an off road jayco or similar (beds at each end) and changing the internal kitchen/fridge/seating into two single beds and having the area under those beds open from the outside to house an external kitchen, fridge on slide etc.

I can pick up a decent off road unit for around 15k and was hoping to get my mods for 10k which makes it still cheaper than a jurgens or echo etc.

Spent a bit of time searching and cant seem to find anyone that does those type of mods. Perhaps Im dreaming but I know what I want and would rather get exactly what I want then settle for something else.

Feel free to add. I may be just too picky with my requirements.

cheers
chappo

Have you considered getting the kids to share?  When I was a kid that was considered fun......

That way you and your mate can use the singles.  Gives you a lot more options without needing to do expensive mods.

Sounds like you need to get a camper with 2 singles and space to put up some bunks, stretchers, swags for the kids.  CUB have that setup (look at the bottom of this page) http://cubcampers.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/Spacevan-Specifications.pdf

There are plenty of bunks that are easy to setup if the kids are small http://www.ebay.com.au/sch/Sport-/167889/i.html?_nkw=camping+bunks

Depending on your budget, you could always build one or have one built/modified to your specs.

This is my mates van. He built it himself, based on the chassis of a duel axle car trailer. It is ideal for his family and kids. On the inside there is queen bed and 2 sets of bunks (top bunks fold against the walls so the bottom beds can be used as seating also. Small sink and heaps of storage, a microwave (they have a bub), gas hot water system and a spot for the porta pottie.

All cooking and refrigeration is on the outside, sink, gas burner for a camp oven, proper 2 burner BBQ, hot and cold water, slide out fridge and esky, pantry and heaps more storage on the other side.

It is awesome. He was originally building 2 one for me also, however I went in a different direction because of some of the places I wanted to go, I look at his with envy when we are set in a Caravan Park though.

He built this for about 30 - 35k all up out of caravan materials, the frame is also 50 x 50mm fully welded alloy, no timber in the structure.

Regards

Jas
