48x11 should be good for 110kmh.  ;) :cup: I used to sit trucks down the hiway at 100kmh on a 54x13.

Wife has found some motivation for riding again, so we've been out a few times with some friends kids.

Sunday was 25km out of the 30km that I normally do (the road is marked 7.5km, 10km, 12.5km and 15km turn points). She took the road bike, whilst the rest of us we're on 29ers and  27.5er. Went ok, averaged about 22kmh.

Today we added some dirt, and were all on mountain bikes. What it really showed was the extra speed that a 29er gives over a 26 bike. I ended up getting sent for an extra 15km to ride the kids home giving Mr a total of 45km on the mountain bike today.

Been told tomorrow is possibly road bike day l, but if I take off I'm dead...

Alright gents the lovely has been into me about getting healthy. I've done the running thing and tbh it destroys my knees and back plus it's boring!! So I have a heap of trails around mt Macedon I can ride on. Starting looking at mtb and I got confused about how many different styles of bike there is!! Also the price of some of them for my no ability scares me. What type should I be looking for please?

I'd suggest you start with a 2nd hand hard tail, doesn't matter if it is 26 or 27.5 inch. The most important thing is to get the right size, go to a bike shop and sit on a few bikes. You can get an idea of what size you are and go from there. You can buy new if you really feel like it but for a first bike no need to spend big $. Once you're hooked then you can buy a carbon dually :) I use my 26 inch hardtail for riding with the family on bike trails and dirt roads etc.

That's perfect to get started, come out for a drive and I'll service it and set it up for you. You'll probably need some new tyres/tubes.

Ride the bike you have, get some basic skills and fitness up, work out what type of riding you do/prefer, then when you have that sorted buy a new bike.

Or 2...  Somehow we manage to have accumulated 5 by bikes between myself and my wife...

She has a cheap hard tail, good roadie and ok hybrid...

I've got a good hard tail and good roadie...

Biggest challenge for us, with 4 year old twins is avoiding DBS

That sounds like the sales pitch at one of our shops... We'll find something that matches none of the criteria you gave us - when I was shopping last year I went asking for a:
-cross country biased bike ~100mm travelish
-29er
-Extra Large frame
-2x10 gearing
-around $2k

They offered me a 27.5, large frame, all mountain bike that was $5k...

Needless to say we don't go there any longer. The other shop in town gets our money.

For you, id be looking at a budget of about $1k if buying new, $750 used and getting something that is fairly recent. The difference between my 1999 Cannondale (a £1000 bike then) and my Scott (a $1300 last year) is huge, not only in components but also how it rides and handles. Having previously loved the Cannondale, the Scott wins every time now.

Buy that one in large and in 6 months time i will pay you a third of the price you paid.

Ride the one in the shed. Get hooked then buy a better one. Then go riding with others and buy the duallie.

More than welcome to join in any time for a ride

I've got a good hard tail and good roadie...

7 bikes between the 2 of us...
Me:
1999 Cannondale F700SL (hack bike, complete with pannier rack)
2000ish Kona Kiluea (bit more of a hooligan 26" wheel bike than the Cannondale as it's a smidge small for me - it started of as 1995 Kona Fire Mountain, so when I snapped that they gave me a frame the same size)
2010ish Specialized Roubaix Tarmac
2016 Scott Scale 29er

Wife:
2007ish Scott something, XS, but really good spec as the year after they put discs on and droppped the component spec
2011 Giant Trance 26" wheel
Some vintage of Avanti Road bike

Basically I know how I like my bikes to fit; wife is less sure so the Scott is actually a touch too small for her, but is a good little bike to throw around a bit more than a bigger bike is. She likes to sit "in" the bike, not "on" it - but this took time to work out, as it's something that only becomes apparent when you've done some riding.

I also kept getting promised a new bike, but it took a few years to end up with the new mountain bike!

7 bikes between the 2 of us...

Oh the shame...

at one stage there I had seven bikes for myself... (sad I know)

1988 Mongoose IBOC Pro (set up for remote touring with an Alsop stem)
1989 Fisher CR7 (with off road drop flare bars and Suntour butterfly shifters)
1992 Mantis Pro Floater
2003 Ellsworth Moment
2004 Salsa Ala Carte' (set up as a full rigid singlespeed)
2004 Surly Long Haul Trucker (custom build with flat bars, bar ends and thumbshifters)
2005 Ibis Mojo

(over the years... there have been many others, this was just the collection at one stage)

now... I have one bike to rule them all.

Muru Cycles (surprise!) Witjira Trail titanium fatbike. With a Rohloff 14 speed internal gear rear hub and Rockshox Bluto fork up front.

ridden as is... with 4.0" tyres and a suspension fork... it's my trail bike.

With 4.8" tyres and a rigid ti fork... it's my desert/expedition/adventure bike.

with rigid ti fork, it's also my touring/bikepacking bike. I can even run "skinny" tyres on it. (3.5" Speedsters...)

I reckon it's the other way around. Only need one for the road and plenty for all kinds of dirt. No, wait, 2 for the road, one fixed one geared.

I've got:
Yeti XC dually, light and fast
Trek Single speed dually, vintage carbon Y frame owned since new.
Apollo vintage Rigid MTB for general riding, kiddie hauling and grocery getting
Big W fat bike, for when camping near the sand
A flat bar roadie for commuting and faster road riding (I'm between drop bar roadies due to shifter failure)
and a fixie for being a hipster.

Would love to have an all-mountain bike for a bit more downhill and fun stuff but in reality I'd probably not ride to it's potnential due to age induced increased fear of injury.

I forgot my Avanti fixie that I have on the back of the sleeper cab of the truck, in case I get a chance to ride

I'd sooner go quickly on the Velodrome or the road, than the scrub.
