happily not part of the pissing comp.. but I'm lookin for a set of 26in MTB wheels for an old school bike I wanna do up...
I've had it from new (Mid 90s) and would like to get it sorted, throw some road tyres on it and with summer coming on start to lose some blubber... Been a few decades since I rode Kurnell to Mascot to work daily

It's one of these, but doesn't look this good - yet, been laying on the floor in a shed at dads for 10+ years since my accident, so its covered in grime, dirt and Shit but will wash up great... I forgot it was there actually.

I actually saw one of these yesterday afternoon, same colour also. What were you doing riding around at Cannon hill?

That's cheap for a set of wheels, my last pair cost me $600 and that was second hand.

$349 Sambo and mechanical brakes. The only thing I did was to back the cones off and it will need a a of fine tuning on the gears. They work but just a fly chit off being perfect. 
 
Double walled aloy rims and the it goes alright.

Seat/Frame/Forks lock out -  obvious things that look same as our FELTs @$900+ but with Hyd. brakes.

For riding the beach it makes sense.

be wary... if it's on Rotorburn... there is a high likelyhood that it's toasted already.

also, consider compatibility with your existing drivetrain. Your bike looks to have a an older style 5 (or 6) speed "screw-on" freewheel. Where the cogs are part of the freewheel mechanism and the whole lot screws on the threads on the hub. This is why older bikes used to break (and bend)  axles a lot. No bearing support out wide.

Most modern stuff uses a splined freewheel "driver" system where the cogs slide onto the splined freewheel mechanism that is actually part of the rear hub. This means an extra bearing is out wide and the axle is supported better and stronger. But the two systems are not cross-compatible.

Same with any enthusiast site, a lot of gear for sale will have been very well looked after and be passed on for a reasonable price. I have bought LOADS of gear on Rotorburn and all of it excellent.

Of course you will get some people that sell rubbish, same as anywhere, but its a well maintained forum and people selling crap will be outed and/or banned.

ok... mainly, it's an opinion... like most people on most topics... I'm allowed to have one of my own.

But you're correct. My comment was maybe a little too "blanket". While you can get a great deal on some decent stuff from rotorburn... there are certain things I'd steer clear of. (DH frames  "only raced for one season"), carbon products (with "only the surface coating cracked") and things of that ilk.

there is also the bit where Bird said the rim was cracked...

Buy a complete new bike, lots around of reasonable quality and cheaper than buying parts.

I bought new brake cables/pads, bottom bracket, tyres/tubes and grips for my son's project bike and just that came to $120.

yea I know, but I wanna use this frame, and finding bits that are compatible apparently is the trick... haven't worked on pushys since the mid 90's... so I'm a touch out of touch with it all.

Put up the details of what is currently fitted to the bike, gearset, wheelset etc etc.
Will help with working out what is compatible.

Don't want suspension - want it for road... Got that old raceline expert at home with forks, and it sucks on the road.

Major issue is I struggle with me left arm that doesn't straighten when hanging on..

I'd pick up the ebay Apollo.

its age means that you'll feel comfortable working on it and you can strip it down, and swap the good parts onto your current (not yet rideable steed.

build one nice bike from two...

I discovered I had been riding/racing with a cracked frame... insurance paid out for a new frame but i couldnt get one for weeks so found a basic model (same frame) bike on special for $1000 less than the frame on its own... swapped all the good bits off my bike and at the same time converted to 1x11 gears.... moved all the components from new bike to my single speed (hydraulic brakes and rear gears ) so worked out well
