Bushranger air max 2. Well build, fast and 5 yr warranty. Shop around, got mine for $300.

Had an $80 SCA prior. Worked OK but slow and ran hot.

Can't complain, I have the same!

I have a projecter typhoon, and whilst it was OK new i'm slowly starting find it getting slower, I also had the fuse holder melt recently and whilst Projecter were great with there customer service and sent me a replacement fuse holder I will be purchasing an ARB compressor shortly.

Piranha Big Red
Had it for at least 6 years and it has done some hard work. Never cut out even reinflating 12 tyres (3 vehicles) non-stop.
Would like one of the dual ARB jobs but oh the $$$

Have the Big Red under the bonnet for 6+ yrs. and very happy with it. Never cut out, even when pumping in hot deser after a big drive.

Also love the convenience of having it mounted and ready to go under the bonnet

Mainey,

I bought mine based on that report too... but went with the Tigerz11 version.

Tigerz sell them for $110 (not $229RRP as per report). But you also don't get the 5yr warranty with Tigerz. Trade off I'm willing to take for the dollars saved.

I'd bet they're both (and the Terrain Tamer version) from the same factory, different badge!

Food for thought.

I've got a TJM, works well and only costs $220 and has a five year warranty.  There are faster pumps but it gets the job done in reasonable time and doesn't get too hot. I just wish it came in a hard case.

Here's an review worth reading:
http://www.4wdaction.com.au/sites/default/files/4WD169%20036-054%20FEATURE%20air_2.pdf

I've got the TJM one too. Paid $200 at a 4wd/camping show about 5-6 years ago.

Great after sales support from my local TJM store (about 12 months after purchase the hose's tyre coupling broke and the TJM store swapped the entire hose immediately no questions asked).

It may not be the fastest but I've never had it overheat even when puming up mine and 2 mates 4wd's tires from 16psi 'back to back' (12 4wd tires in a row) in the middle of summer.

For the money, can't complain!

I remember a previous compressor comparison which made the point that although two or more compressors with similar specs from the same Chinese factory may look the same, the internal components of the cheaper ones may be very different e.g. the material used for the piston and bearings may be considerably less durable in the cheaper versions.

You get what you pay for - Caveat Emptor!  The cheap one doesn't have a long warranty because the manufacturer doesn't expect it to last as long!
Camping is great as long as the mattress is inner spring!

True statement... most of the time.  Everyone makes their own call on perceived value for money. But let's not go down that track... was just making sure Mainey was aware of the the three 'similar' models in the test.

I have a bushranger air max II, cut the battery clamps off and put an anderson plug on so it could be connected to the back of the Prado where it would then reach all six tyres. May not be the fastest on the market, but its never cut out due to heat, and provides time to have a cool refreshment while waiting.

I did also have a fitting that connected to the one of the low pressure ports on a spare 1st stage for my scuba tank. It would put in about 1psi per second i.e. about 15-20secs per tire, of cold air so I would just reinflate to "cold tyre" presure. Not very practicle for touring as you only have a limited supply of air and have to lug a scuba tank around, but was good for day trips to the beach.

Hi
I modified and fitted a air compressor out of a landrover discovery 3 (air suspension) about 5/6 years ago,
takes about 90 seconds to pump up a 265/70/17 from 22 psi to 38psi.
Have had two ARB compressor that gave nothing but trouble.
Cheers
Geoff

I've got the high output single cylinder ARB compressor in my engine bay for the lockers. I also occasionally use it to pump up the tyres from 15psi up to 35 psi after beachwork. On hot days the thermal usually cuts in after about 3 tyres. If you plan to use it more for air than lockers then you shouldn't fit it in an engine bay although diesel engine bays seem to run cooler than petrols. TJ Wrangler engine bays on the other hand, are hotter than the surface of the sun.

cheers
