what 12v tire AIR PUMP do people use
« on: June 18, 2012, 10:26:11 PM »
Looking at replacing my existing air pump with something faster

So the questions are:

(a) What brand AIR PUMP is most often used by those on here ??

(b) Do you believe the one you use now is too slow ??

(c) Would you buy the same brand again ??

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yes, have seen ARB and some big stores and seen some on the net too
Now looking for a second opinion, by people who use them on a regular basis

Hiya

I use the ARB CKMA12...I have it installed under the bonnet for over 4 years...Only issue was they wired it terrible on the power wire to the unit, all fixed.

Yes it does 22psi to 38psi in a couple of minutes, ive done 4x 31" MTZ's on a 42 degree Day out at Dargo and then did my friends 100 series straight away after mine and didn't miss a beat....

Yes i would buy this unit again, although they have a couple more models since i bought mine....Just watch out for cheap chines ones...

Bushranger air max 2. Well build, fast and 5 yr warranty. Shop around, got mine for $300.

Had an $80 SCA prior. Worked OK but slow and ran hot.

I have the Big Red and an ARB. The reason for two is that I had the Big Red from my early days 4WDing and then I got a locker so put in the ARB under the front seat. While the big Red is good the ARB is quite a lot quicker and I have not had it cut out from over heating at the Big Red has done when going from 20 to 40 psi on Two cars. Would I have bought another if not for the air locker, nope. Was happy the way things were. I now use the Big Red in the camper as a spare and for the bikes footballs etc.

I've got a TJM, works well and only costs $220 and has a five year warranty.  There are faster pumps but it gets the job done in reasonable time and doesn't get too hot. I just wish it came in a hard case.

Here's an review worth reading:

ARB and a KCI that came with a mag subscription.  ARB one is great, and the KCI one isn't too bad either but the curly hose and the screw on connector sh1t me to tears.

Ditto, except that my first is a TJM rather than ARB.  I too hated the screw-on connector so I went to Supercheap and bought a clip-on connector and a small hose clamp to replace it.

We have an ARB one in the plastic box.  Bought a second air hose to reach the camper tyres. Sure, the curly hoses are a bit of a nuisance but both store inside the box.  No problems so far and quicker than the cheap one we had before.
Looked at the ones to mount under the bonnet and which could be utilised for diff lockers but decided I might have a new vehicle before I got around to the diff locks so settled for this one.  Also being portable can go with us in any vehicle we choose to use for the trip.
Cheers,

never had an issue with mine. not a big brand name or the big price that goes with it. google it and see for yourself. Cheaper on ebay too.

I had a Projecta unit - worked ok for a few years, but was slow and ran very hot. The bag never worked - zippers broke, the hot bits of the compressor melted it, etc. Eventually the hose disintegrated one day when I went to use it. I know of three others where the piston/conrod broke, thankfully mine never did that.

Replaced it with the ARB toolbox unit. Worth it's weight in gold. Fast, easy to use, doesn't get as hot, when it does get hot it's still safe in its box - its just a good compressor. Yes, expensive - undeniable. But based on the service mine has given me, worth every cent.

That's my experience, can't speak for the other brands. Would buy the ARB one again in a heartbeat.

Good luck!
Matto :)

I use this one I got from 4wd mag subscription. Had it for around 3 years. A little slow but always reliable. Nice long 12v lead, easy to use air hose with clip on type fitting. packs away nice and neat in bag.

Only one i've owned so cant comment on others, but for what we do (pump from18psi, back to road pressure) it works fine.

I bought a compressor off Ebay from ABR-Sidewinder about 5 years ago it works great pumping up my truck and camper tyres after many beach camping trips, although it has the dreaded screw on fitting. I also was given a Bushranger compressor when I brought my set of BF Goodies 2 years ago and it  works fantastic with no fuss. :cup:

I have had this "Bushranger 4X4 compressor" for many, many years, it has not had a lot of use and it IS slow   :-[

It runs off either of the two x 12v extension plugs in the Ssangyong, and has a 10 amp fuse in the male plug at the end of the compressor cable, this fuse does 'blow' on occasions if you don't give the pump a rest between front and back wheels and as the 12v Ssangyong accessory plugs are only rated @ 10 amps I'm not going to be able to use a larger (more efficient) air compressor from either of them.
I will have to run a bigger compressor off the Dual battery cable, via an Anderson plug extension.

I bought an ARB compressor in a case 12 years ago, which served me faithfully until I put lockers in this Cruiser and got the newer, faster unit. The old one is still in service with another member and will probably outlast their interest in 4wding.

I just pumped up two massive tractor tyres to 30psi to test repairs and it was strong and dependable. I know from reading the tests in 4WDA that there are some real competitors to the ARB compressors these days, though I can't recall what they were. I'd recommend the new ARB compressor, not the high output version, for anyone. If you've got huge tyres and air down all the time, then the high output twin pump version would be money well spent.

I rate the hoses and I bought the inflator with gauge in it. This allows me to flip a cable tie over the lever and let it do its thing without having to squat next to the tyre.

I have just tested the new twin engine one from ARB, it pumped 6 tyres from 10 to 40psi (IIRC) in about 7 minutes... and it can power a rattle gun    ;D  ;D  ;D

My own unit is the single-engine portable ARB one, it works well but at exactly half the speed. Yes it's around $300 but is about five times better than a $80 one so I reckon is worth the spend
