The best feature for...
« on: June 12, 2012, 06:35:52 PM »
I am looking for people's opinions on their most loved feature on a camper for three scenarios:

1) weekend getaways.

2) travelling around Australia for 12 months.

3) travelling around Australia with blocks of time working in one spot.

we are thinking of replacing our modcon camper and trying to work out what we might not have thought of yet...

1) weekend getaways.
Ease of set up
2) travelling around Australia for 12 months.
The comfort of the bed imo
3) travelling around Australia with blocks of time working in one spot.
as above

Sorry I wasn't so helpful with that part .  I'm a basic person.

As long as I've got somewhere comfortable and dry to sleep I'm usually fairly happy.

We do these mostly.  I personally don't have a "most loved feature" ... I love it as a whole item.  Our CT makes it easy for us to "get away" every other weekend, as everything we require is already in it.  Pack some food, some clothes, throw a few things on the ute and we are away.

One thing I do really love about our CT ... we pull up and 10 minutes later we are relaxing our butts off!   :cup:

Edit:
Really looking for the little things in life, like hanging space, or the ability to lock things away.

Well then:
We can lock the whole thing all the way around when closed.
- I like the hard floor as you don't have to worry about getting a soft floor wet or the type of surface it goes on.  We sleep our dogs on the hard floor too, so they are up off the ground with an insulated floor under them.
- Kitchen and pantry both pull out on runners and are permanently mounted.  Kitchen swings around against the camper, giving us more room under the awning to move about.
- I think the draught flap and end wall was worth the money for those cold windy days.
- I made up some jerry can rubbish bins and they are great for both rubbish, wet storage going home and keeping the critters out of our garbage.
- It's great having the CT as fully 4x4 as this means it can go anywhere the ute can.
- Having a tropical roof as standard is something all manufacturers should do.  It's essential in hot weather and also keeps the canvas on the roof clean.
- The quality workmanship and finish on our camper means we've done no modifications.  We did however, get some options:  extra battery, mudflaps on the stoneguard and extra canvas walls for the awning (which have pvc viewing strips at head height in them) and we opted for the DO35 hitch which is an excellent choice.
- Standard relocatable LED lighting strip outside has 2 brightness settings and would light up the MCG fairly well on any given evening.
- Very easy to set up and pack up for me (not overly muscular sheila) as well as hitch up ... we had this particular requirement in case of emergencies when looking for a CT ... had to be a one sheila operation.
- Lack of dust ingress anywhere in the camper.

Hmmm... I think between uses/requirements 1 to 3 you're starting out with the basic soft top trailer and progressing to a Jayco type windup and finally a full pop-top/cara, but somewhere along the way you're losing the ability to really go bush seriously. It's why you see all types out there moving around or virtually planted in a van park.
There's no Great Evil conspiracy against consumers within engineering, manufacturing and supply. Just the many tradeoffs incurred to satisfy diverse tastes, priorities and wallets. But first comes all the insatiable Gummint eggsperts, nanny-staters and usual suspects.

I figured that is what you are after, but I really can't help on that front.

I haven't actually taken the CT camping yet, I've been on a trip with one before but it was just a tent on a trailer, no extras.

I think what might help you more is a checklist of what people can't leave without or a list of mods made to a CT, rather than a singular favourite feature.

Some of these ideas might be more what you're looking for, it's mostly my checklist of things I want to do and some general tips:

  • Having automatic lights in any fixed boxes and the main tray.  Makes it easier to find something in the dark without juggling a torch (alternative, get a head lamp or magnetic torch so you can have two hands to rummage).
  • Something to chuck over the mattress on top in case you have to put the tent down wet.  I believe a picnic mat spread furry side down on the mattress works and has the benefit of doubling as a picnic mat (go figure).
  • Permanent lighting in the tent to save set up time
  • Trading out the standard ladder for something a little bit easier to climb for the less agile or more inebriated among us, I like the look of these, maybe with a platform at the top, you could make a fold out table with the same footprint and it wouldn't take up massive amounts of space.
  • Have something to chuck anything that gets wet in, so it doesn't get other stuff wet.  I believe a dry sack might work for this and wouldn't take up much room to carry if it wasn't needed
  • Dust/Water proof containers for anything that goes in the CT or back of a ute.  The cheap plastic tubs seem to do the job
  • A list of everything you brought with you and where you put it, helps when leaving to make sure you have what you need, helps when packing up afterwards to make sure you've got everything you brought, and saves pulling everything out trying to find something you forgot

The same as Kit -e-Kat  thw whole thing . Knowing the bed is clean & dry is huge , . My fridge , chair, camp ovens & the serenity of being out there . When on an extended tour the routine of camp set is just something that happens daily . As to what you bring along with you that depends on your requirements .
