Dual cab awnings
« on: June 12, 2012, 02:19:59 PM »
Hi was wondering if anyone can give me some information about mounting an awning on a dual cab.  At the moment we dont have a canopy on the back and I have read some things that dont recommend the longer awnings from canopy rack to roof rack.  So didnt know if perhaps there was a narrower awning maybe like the rear 4wd ones that go on wagons that might be short enough in width to just mount to roof rack.  Also does anyone know if this would provide much shade/shelter for roadside stops etc.   :)

How much width have you got on the canopy to mount it? My first thought is to mount it to the canopy only, but you wouldn't want too much length in front of the forward mount else it will shake on rough roads. I love my ARB awning.

Mine is mounted on the canopy, stretching just over the cab.  It is great, unluss the wind blows up, then it is time to pack it up.  Definitely a no-no to have things connected to both the canopy and cabin, as they both move independantly of one another and you can end up with damage along the way.

My awning is 1.8m long and stretches 2.2m from the car.

Thanks for the replies so far we dont have a canopy yet one of the things on the list of many to save up for :( that was one of the reasons for the post if we could mount it on the cab then would have to decide what to get first awning or canopy.  I like having the ute area but can see the benifit of lockable canopy.  Cracka that sounds like a good size not much under some of the wagon ones and still usable on a dual cab.  Must keep saving that money it looks like.

I actually took mine off the wagon and fitted to the ute.  Mine is a custom made canvas job though.  I will try and get some photos on the weekend and post, otherwise I will do it the following weekend.

I have a 2010 Hilux.  The racks are part of the Iron Man canopy fitted to the tray.  I have added a wire basket ontop of those, then the awning is mounded to the basket.

I would advise going for at least 2m wide and longer if you can.

As you can see this one is mounted on the roof rack.  We use this for extra cover from weather on the CT to the car trips.  It is 7 x size 8 thongs from poles to vehicle.  ;D  As this one is mounted up and down (rather than sideways if that makes sense), there is a slight gap over the doors when raining ... say 2 or 3 fingers.  I'll ask the BF how long it is, what brand and $ if you like (and racks).  We were delayed one weekend going camping so he could save $60 ... not sure if that was the racks or the shade.

I notice no difference driving along with it (there will be a nominal cost due to the roof racks fuel wise of course ... but then so would the bar work on the ute), but he usually only puts it on when we camp or if they have no shade onsite at work.

I have an 2006 Navara D22.
This is the awning I bought from work.
http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/online-store/products/Ridge-ryder-4WD-Shade-Awning.aspx?pid=292291#Description
The racks are Thule brand.
As you can see from the pictures, I didnt want the awning to stick to far outside the racks (I thought it looked like crap), so I used spacers to mount them inside and above the racks.
The square stock I used as a spacer gave me plenty of clearance.

I just drilled through my racks and bolted them on.
I have not taken it off since I put it on and dont really plan to ever take it off...

Fantastic pics Kit_e and Bill also Kit_e I love that you measure in size 8 thongs and how many fingers spaces for where the rain might come in that is language I can understand  ;D.  If you happen to find out what brand both are and $ if you know would be great info info info that is what I am after then I will show it all the the BF if he hasnt looked at post already as he will be doing the installing.  Bill that looks a good awning in the link might have to make a trip in there.  :)

Okay BF just left ... so ... both Rhino brand.  Racks have fixed fittings and adjustable racks and will carry 100kg $400 and the shade is either 3.0 or 3.5 mtrs long (he was watching the State of Origin) and like I said 7 x size 8 thong wide which he paid $350 for BUT he tells me you can get them cheaper at Autobarn when they have a sale ... $290?
