What got you hooked on camper trailers
« on: June 11, 2012, 10:54:38 PM »
I don't know if this is in the right area, please feel free to move it, but I thought it would be interesting to hear how people started out camping.

For me it was with my parents (see below with my Mum & Dad's brand new 1985 Jayco Jaylark).

How did you get hooked? And remember  :worthles:

With dad,  a few of his brothers, their uncle and a few other blokes they are mates with on the yearly fishing trip they've gone on since the great uncle was young.  Was only allowed to go from 11 years old and up, mum has never been a camper and the trip was an excuse for a piss up, I had pretty bad asthma in the early years.  They camped a long way from the nearest hospital and off the beaten track, so it was risky for me to go until it settled down, especially since we didn't have power to run the nebuliser in-case things went south.

Also they didn't want to look after a kid on the boys trip.

Sorry no pics on this computer.  We only started taking a digital camera in 2004 and I still haven't gotten around to scanning all the old photos in.

We used to tent it, but I'd had enough of all the packing/unpacking/setting-up.

My wife and I went camping (tent) in our early married years. Planned to do a caravan trip around oz. Even bought the caravan!! But change of jobs got in the way and that didn't happen. Started my own business and stopped camping while the kids grew up. Then bought a Forester and tent and camped with 2 of our boys for a short while. But it got too hard packing the car for each trip so I thought of taking the trailer. Then it was a short jump to a camper trailer. Have now upgraded to a Prado and soft-floor CT and get out as often as possible. Best thing we have even done!!! Retirement later this week and we have lots of trips planned (starting with Cape York on Saturday). May even do the round-Australia trip we postponed 30-odd years ago.

I've been a keen outsdoors type all my life. I grew up living in a bus. Even a stint in the army didn't abate my enjoyment of camping out.

I first got interested in camper trailers after going on a couple of trips with friends who had them. It was clearly easier and more comfortable when camping with kids to have something with a bedroom, a kitchen and a bench.

I planned a trip to Fraser Island, hired a camper from Coast and Country (who now own Trackabout) and that was all she wrote. I knew I had to have one.

Grew up camping with the olds and loved it. I'm now trying to pass on that love to my kids. As for CT's, we were tent campers until last year when we were on Fraser and saw so many camper trailers that we just knew that was the way to go.
And the rest, as they say, is history ;D
And I am bloody hooked.........BIG TIME :cup:

cheers

Same.  The olds made me do it.   ;D  Tents, pop top caravans, ute canopies, hilux vans, sleep in the car so tow a trailer with all the gear ... I guess a camper trailer was just the natural progression of things.

BTW, love the pics Pete :cup: Kids these days pay big money to dump the rear of their commodores like that ;D ;D
My mum and dad have a book on the Flinders Ranges and surrounds published in the 80's sometime. There is a full page photo in that book of our campsite at Arkaroola (if my memory serves). It shows our white HJ Kingswood station wagon next to our old canvas tent. I'll see if I can dig it out and post it up here.
Cheers

Just realised I only answered part of the question, that is, hooked on camping.

What got me into the trailers was borrowing my uncles one year when we had a few extras come along.  My cousin (same age goes on every trip) and I had it set up and had cracked the 2nd beer while watching the others flounder around with the old cabin tent :D

I realised after years of tents in a camper i could climb up into a bed rather than trip and fall on it

Spent every Easter camping with my oldies out in the gemfields until I was 16 or so and then didn't do it again for another 20 years.  Mainly because my exwife didn't want to. But I was probably being a lazy bastard too.

Got back into it about 7 years ago (sans exwife) through hiring to start with.

Bought a camper last year and this school holidays we're taking the kids to the Gemfields with my oldies.

To say I am excited is an understatement!

We have been CT owners for less than 12 months. Our first trip last August was to Mudgee in the middle of winter. Eight members of my extended family turned up on a weeks notice and we had the best family holiday I ever had. Now, whenever we think of going somewhere and we dont give any/all of the family the opportunity to come along all hell breaks lose. On top of that just last week my mother and father took delivery of their CUB CT. So it's not just my Princess and I that are hooked but everyone in our extended families as well. This camper trailer thing is getting out of control.
