dodgy tradesman
« on: June 08, 2012, 07:42:04 PM »
our elderly neighbors had a tradesman knock on there door claiming to have installed there cladding 25yrs ago and he just wants to do a check to see how it is holding up.....a couple of minutes later he came back and said that it needs a few repairs which he can do now if they like.
they then heard a noise out the front and noticed that he started gurning the driveway...when asked what he was doing he got aggressive with them and demanded $700 for his tme so far (less than 20min from when he knocked on the door).
in the end he conned $240 off them which is all the cash they had....and he done nothing....
just sum ripping off defenseless pensioners.
he didn't go to any of the other neighbours houses so we think he was casing them....just low life

Was probably a pikey, gypsey, tinker,

What ever you call them, they're filthy thieving scum.

Preying on the elderly and nasty evil people.

Just plain scum.
Why do people ask "What the hell were you thinking?"
Obviously I was thinking I was going to get away with it and not have to explain it....

Omg? That is terrible! They should have called the police, were they scared for their safety? Is that why they just gave him the cash? How disgusting, poor things, I'm not looking forward to getting old :(

Agreed Chippy
A person like that needs to be flogged publicly, unfortunately not allowed.  I do not know about other states, but in WA 99% of people in the construction industry have "white cards".  I have one, and I happily show it if I am asked, as well as my licence to make sure the customers or people know I am who I say I am, and I also give them my trade registration number if they wish to check up on it.  I am always happy to wait for them to check prior to starting any work, and then give a quote of the maximum something may cost, which usually ends up less than the maximum.

G'Day Chippy,
I agree mate.
Unfortunately there are those that are intimidated, gullible and just don't how or what to do when these pieces of crap pull something like this.

cancan,
I'm sorry to hear this.
I hope your neighbours don't loose faith in tradies or people in general, because this is far worse than loosing cash, even tho 700 bucks is a lot of money.
It would of shaken them  :(

I too give new clients a business card when first meeting them (with my license number on it) That way they have a chance to check up on me if they wish.  However in 6 1/2 years not one person has asked to see my license card (I find that amazing).

I agree there are too many gullible/trusing people in this world. I come across them regularly (like those who are willing to pay 100% upfront before work has started - which I NEVER accept) Its a sad state of affairs and a dissapointing reflection of the times when we need to check up on EVERYONE who does work for us. But sadly this is the age we live in. :(

The best thing they can do is report the matter to the police, and learn from the lesson. Sadly I doubt they will ever see him ( or the money) again.

This should just be called "Shysters" because it really doesn't have much to do with tradesmen.

True Julian, but the honest blokes trades gets drag through the mud because of these imposters, Hmm
When I write a quote out or an invoice for anyone, my license number is on my card(Which I believe in NSW is mandatory on all documents with your business name), I encourage the client, if their have internet access, to do a license check online or phone the dept if they are concerned about anything.
Never had any worries,  ;D
It pains me that these mongrels are out there and they keep stinging honest people.

I've been doing reno's at my place for over a year

So far the dodgy's have included:

1) Builder who left the country to go to Kenya with half the job done (only half the money paid), and all of the work sub par, including dodgy electrical work.
2) Spiral staircase manufacturer who after a year still is going at snails pace to fix my issues. So many quality issues. They also wrecked my carpet and when I came home to see the install, their dog was on my couch. I wont name these guys yet but google "spiral staircase Melbourne" and work out which one is a modular design
3) Mr antenna....dodgy install. Made them come back and take their stuff and get a refund (after 3 visits and numerous phone calls).  I recommend Sat Pro. Superstars

However, I have also had some rippers:

1) South East Pest Control for termites and rats
2) ....ummmm ....that's about it : )

Mr Denn1s

Did you check the credentials of any /all of the "trademan" you  contracted?  Are they BSA licensed? Are they insured? There are avenue to be used to gain an appropriate outcome either financially or to get the work completed.  NEVER EVER engage unlicecensed or uninsured "tradies" thats just asking for trouble.

yeah I did. With the builder, I even paid the insurance....but

...forgot to take a copy from them so they probably pocketed that $1k

Mr Antenna...well shame on me for choosing another Jim's and expecting a good outcome

When it comes to the stairs, I even visited the factory. They are a long standing business and meant to be reputable. I just got a Shit product
