Swimmers and guns
« on: June 08, 2012, 08:17:26 AM »
http://www.news.com.au/national/australian-olympic-swimmers-nick-darcy-and-kenrick-monk-pose-with-guns-in-facebook-photo/story-e6frfkvr-1226388480478

Regardless of what you think if Nick Darcy, this beat up is friggen rediculous.  They are posing with legal firearms in a gun store, legally.  So now the Australian Olympic committee are banning guys from undertaking legal activities and sharing them with their friends.  I wonder how our Olympic shooters feel...

And to say they are 'high powered weapons' again is a media headline grab. They are not high powered weapons.  It is two Colt style handguns and two shotguns. Neither of which are classesed as 'high powered weapons' And Gun Control Australia comparing these firearms to ones Martin Bryant used is a blatant lie.  He never used shotguns or pistols at all.

I do think 'people' are still angry that he is even in the team and are trying to use this to get rid of him.  But I think it extremely unfair to use pictures of something which is legal to show their dislike of a certain person in our Olympic team.

yeah it's a crock of poo poos. Two blokes havin a bit of giggle in a gun shop. Plenty of Aussies have done that... and yes, highly disrespectful to the honourable Olympic sport of shooting

Are you surprised?
We are talking about the Australian media and the Olympics, the worst event ever created.

This is about $$$$ not his rights.

I was enormously disappointed at the time dedicated to this on ABC radio this morning. This is not real news or even a discussion worthy of continuing. They did what young, and some not so young, blokes do. They found something different in another country.

It is hard to see how they could have breached any social media policy too, as they haven't done anything illegal. The PC Brigade are taking over.

They don't seem to be getting much media advice. Now they're apologizing for any offense caused. When you haven't done anything wrong, apologizing gives weight to the false accusers I reckon.

I'd like to see them say "gee, I don't think we broke any laws, we didn't hurt anyone, we didn't buy them, we're really surprised there is so much reaction to a photo. What did we do wrong?"

Couldnt agree more... WTF - they are holiday snaps! We all have dumb photos like that somewhere from a trip in life.

THe UsA.. when i lived there for a year in South Dakota, the local store called Kesslers blew me away.. I walked in through the door and you had 2 turnstyles. one to the food, one to the Bottlo... The first thing you walked through in Bottle shop was the beer section through to the gun section, then the spirits section, then it went out into the tobacco area, then the checkout... I was dumbfounded... They wouldnt let me take photos sadly :(

The Walmart carpark was even more eye opening.. Amongst the cars were dozens of Pickups, with gunracks on the inside of the cab on back window with guns, and with windows open, and in some cases keys in the car. Nobody thought it was unusual....

I have a picture of my Mum posing with a pair of pearl handled .45's and low slung holsters.

Naughty girl, they should have sent her home from the Vietnam war for carrying on like that!

If you are in the public eye, Face-Book is your own worst enemy. Publicity is the other, if Swimming Australia hadn't told them to pull the pictures and told everyone that they had been told to remove the pictures, do you think anyone would have cared?

In this instance I think the press release from Swimming Australia in reply to the coalition for gun control should have been 'So?'. By pandering to special interest groups the story got out of their control, became a big (non)story which in turn has been prejudicial to the image of Swimming Australia. By treating the allegation of wrong doing with the contempt it deserved it would have starved it of oxygen and no one would have cared.

Oh, and the guns are just like the ones used in Port Arthur, they are big and black and mean looking ::)

My father in law is an Olympic God medalist rower. Albeit from the 84 games.
I don't know about this story. No comment on that.
Butvi despise the fact that the nasty one who king hit the other guy is now going to the Olympics and has refused to pay any compensation to the victim.
Whats more important.?
Respect and dignity. Being responsibke, doing the right thing. And moral well being, or a chance of a medal for the scumbag and some points to Australia.?
sorry, but swimming Australia and the politics of the Olympics has dissilusiond me.

I'll not be watching it.
Why do people ask "What the hell were you thinking?"
Obviously I was thinking I was going to get away with it and not have to explain it....

This whole issue is just media BS to sell a product.  They should not apologise, nor should they have had to remove the photographs from the internet.  Whatever these young people have done in the past has been dealt with and has no bearing on this photograph issue.  The media had no right to sacrifice them for their own gain.  What has happened to "a fair go" in Australia?  Obviously the media doesn't believe in it.
Sorry about the rant - just thought I'd add my support to the similar sentiments expressed above.

I dont care if its a beat up, made up, lies or whatever.

Darcy has a big debt to the Karma gods after declaring bankruptcy to avoid paying compensation.

Plus its the olympics - spoilt tax paid brats.

I don't have a problem with the pics just the two morons in them.
Neither of them should even be in the team due to recent events, and darcy should be annoyed because it wasn't even him who posted the pics.

Yep, sick of the PC-BS. First thing I thought of was the fact that if this was the shooting team an eyelid would not have been batted. If you look at the polls on the online news sites the masses are 75 for 25 against , these idiots need to listen to the PEOPLE !

Shouldnt the Olimpics be about how much money you can waste on white elephant sporting grounds . Also on how to syuff up the lives of the host countrys people having to pay in $ & extra wasting of resorces . Pumped up school sports event & drugs .
