Tim Flannery's "Earthian" moment...........????

CLIMATE change campaigner Tim Flannery says mercury tooth fillings should be removed from corpses before they are cremated.
.
 .
The practice should be made law, Australia's chief climate commissioner said.

"You don't want to poison people when you are cremated," Prof Flannery said.

"No one would want that."

Addressing the Australian Medical Association's national conference in Melbourne yesterday, he said an awareness campaign was needed.

"I think people would be comfortable with removing the fillings, it is just a matter of awareness," he said.

Prof Flannery said undertakers should be required to remove the fillings and families also could request it.

"You just need a pair of pliers," he said.

"It is a $2 solution."

He said the mercury in teeth fillings was not a problem in people alive because it was not in a methylated form.

"For mercury to become dangerous, it has to get into the atmosphere, which happens when we are cremated, then blow over the oceans (and) go into the ocean depths, where there is very low oxygen, and then transform by bacteria into a methylated form of mercury," Prof Flannery said.

"This is then ingested by fish and the fish get put on the dinner plate."

He said he had not raised the issue with the Federal Government, but he felt it was significant and could be dealt with easily.

While talking about health and environment at the AMA conference, he also raised concerns about a lack of readiness for extreme weather events.

Prof Flannery said deaths from heat were increasing and the community needed to be better educated about the health risks.

"Deaths from heat is a silent killer that is increasing around the world," he said.

"The most vulnerable in our community are most at risk."

Prof Flannery said the loss of respect for science in the climate debate had been "one of the most damaging aspects".

Mercury in fish is a legitimate issue, in top order predatory fish, sharks, marlin and Spanish mackrel for example. This is because mercury has a cumulative effect. Lots of little fish eaten by lots of bigger fish and those fish finally get eaten by the big guys.

With sharks for human consumption in NSW for example, there is trunk maximum weight of 60kg (no tail, head or fins) this is to ensure that only smaller and potentially younger (species dependant) sharks are consumed because of mercury levels in bigger fish.

Most of the issue probably extends from industrial pollution of water ways in years gone by. Mercury and dioxins were why the commercial fishery was closed down in Sydney Harbour. Now it is a recreational fishery only with recommendations on how many grams of fish you should eat from there per month (Based on advice from health experts from the dioxin levels).

In relation to Mr Flannery's comments, I think this is an absolute crock of SH!T. I believe the guy has lost the plot.

But mark my words if he can get some more crack pots to support this crap and the media gets on board, the rest will be history. But first I bet they will do a government funded study and waste a few million of tax payers money to find out.

Rant over.

Regards

Jas

I have great respect for Tim Flannery, although I don't agree with every position he proposes. This might have made more impact if the figured had been included, say the quantity of mercury that is released by cremation each year.

Mercury is nasty stuff that does bad things to kids and adults alike.

Sense of scale? How many people die each year in Australia and how many of them would have fillings? Mercury is highly poisonous in small quantities.

I don't think the future of man kind rests with this issue, surely he has better things to focus his energy on.

Why not just stop cremations alltogether? The guy is an alarmist.

Perhaps more to the point, how many people die each year with a mouth full of their own teeth? What happens to all the mercury from teeth that are pulled out or old fillings that are drilled out? No mention of either by Timbo.

As this article appeared on a Sunday, the slowest news day of any week, I think it should be consigned to the bin. Unfortunately, it would probably be a Recycling Bin and it would appear again and again... much like Tim and his liking of attention and publicity.

Cheers,
