New Cordless Drill

I'am a tool nut.
If you ask Morag she will say I own every power tool known to exist. But she does tend to exagerate sometimes 
I have heaps of 18v cordless drills and use most of them on all my projects.
I hate having to change drill bits, screwdriver tips etc so I load each drill with a different tip that I may need and keep it handy.
Also this way I do not have to worry about using up any one battery in the middle of a job. ( That seriously aggravates me because it seems to take forever to get back and finish the job after the batteries are charged)
I will list them in order of preferance.

I was given one of the 18V Milwaukee units last year, ...... and after owning a string of Ryobi and Bosch cordless that after a few months or so wouldn't hold a charge longer than 1/2 an hour, this unit is fantastic.  As strong as a 240 volt unit and goes all day.

Makita sell a kit containing screwdriver and drill bits all with hexagon ends with locking grooves in them, together with a locking holder to go in the drill chuck.  Makes changing bits a breeze.  Can't find a picture on the net but Bunnings sell them at about $30 a set

Sorry to have to tell you Bill that GMC went bust years ago.  I still have some GMC stuff, mainly tools that aren't used very often and therefore haven't broken down yet!

Going on your theory of picking tools donuts, I'd better get myself some dewalt gear

As a chippy by trade I have plenty of tools.
I would recommend Makita cordless. I have a 18v makita li-ion drill.  it is a great bit of kit. Over the years I have used many different brands, and while I like the power  of both the dewalt and millwaukee drills I find them VERY heavy and unbalanced.

I purchased a Atlas Copco PES12-T (12V T-grip) in the first year of my apprenticeship (1996) and its still going strong.
I have purcahsed 1 battery and have let some smoke out of it several times over the years but it keeps on powering on.
I am pretty sure they don't sell them anymore and the equivilent used to be AEG.

I have used Makita, AEG, Milwaukee. All are very good but it depends on your preference.
Go and try them out at a reputable store and see which one you like the feel of.

using this theory - and being more intersted in the WAFL rather than the AFL i'm glad i went with the Makita

...If it was for home use I would look at the ryobi range at bunnings, buy a drill pack with the batteries and charger and then you can add extra tools as you need them...

I've got one of the new Ryobi 18v Li drills, and it's a magic bit of kit. I love that you can swap the batteries between tools if you buy into the system, and I love that the wall mounted charger keeps the second battery charged up. It's always ready to go, and has never struggled with anything yet.

That said, it's only new still, so will have to wait and see how it lasts. I swore off battery drills for the better part of 10 years, but am now converted to them again.

I'd suggest that these days, so long as you buy into a decent brand, you'll get a good piece of equipment. The biggest thing to me would be to look at what the battery system includes - no point investing heavily in Brand X's batteries and tools, only to the realise that you really need Tool Y, and that brand don't have it as part of their system.

I have one of the Makita kits.
Well actually I have two of them.
But I must use the drills to justify thier existence.

I did know GMC went bust after they bought Triton tools and tried breaking into the US market.
Thank goodness Triton survived, I really like my Triton tools.
I still have a GMC router table and hand planer that are used very rarely so they should last forever.

Popular science (march) has an article on the new Milwaukee M18 Fuel 2603-22ct. It uses anew type of motor with  30%  increase in torque and 50% increase in battery life over the current model. Brushes have been replaced with small circuit boards. Big improvement on an already proven drill.

All I did Wayne was remove the battery, removed the screws from the battery case and threw out the useless NiCad batteries. Attached a 6mm twin cable to the battery connection points and drilled a suitable hole in the battery case to run the cable out and attached an Anderson to the other end of that.
I have a 10m 6mm twin lead with Andersons both ends that I use with the 12V rattle gun and also use with the drill. With a 19mm socket on it its great for winding down the camper stabilisers and the odd small drilling job.
I have Anderson plugs both front and rear on the car and also one on the camper so its a simple hookup to use.
I did a similar conversion on an 18V GMC drill I had that the battery died on but it did not work well on 12V.

I have a Dewalt that is now 12 years old, first set of nicads lasted 10 years, I picked up another drill that came with 3 batteries when the first set died, so now I have one for each hand

Donuts........I replaced my old 12v DeWalt drill some time ago because after about 8 years the batteries were shot, but, the drill was still going strong ( which is why I bought another one ) so I cut the wide bottom off the handle where the battery would clip on and used some 12v female spade fittings to connect the wire for the Anderson Plug. A bit of solder on the connections and then filled the handle with Sikaflex to help hold it all tight and keep out the dirt/dust etc.

It works a treat..................now I'm on the hunt for an old 12v battery 4in grinder to the same mod to, hope that all makes sense 

P.S.................If you get the polarity wrong it will blow the switch in the trigger ( that bit of teck info I got from Guru Symon  ), I did that in my first attempt

A few years ago when I upgraded from my old ni-cad Bosch and NiMH Panasonic I almost went Milwaukee, but the huge range of 'skins' (other cordless tools) Makita have sold me.  As a commercial fitout chippy, IMO Makita is by far the best bang for your buck.  Walk onto any building site and the cordless stuff for be 6-1 Makita.

It's even become standard kit in my camping stuff.  Radio (with mp3), fluro, LED light, fan (yes a fan), dust buster and the charger runs off a 300w inverter or you can get a 12v car charger from the states.

Having said that the quality of the Milwaukess stuff, along with it's 5 year warranty is hard to look past.  Although if your on a tight budget, others including my father inlaw seem to be quite happy with the Ryobi 18v stuff.


and for the Makita man with way too much spare money...

how about a cordless pushbike!
