Moreton Island....Ben-Ewa campground is it any good?
« on: May 17, 2012, 07:46:56 PM »
Hi MySwaggers, we are planning another trip to Moreton Island for around November this year with a group of family friends.
We've camped at Moreton plenty of times but always on the eastern side of the island (Surf beach), and this time we wanted to camp on the calm side so the kids can swim in the sheltered water.

We are looking at camping in the Ben-Ewa camp site, however we are worried about sand flys, mosquito's etc. Wondering if anyone has any experience from camping there recently who could gives us any info.

Much appreciated

We stopped there for a night when we paddled from the Sunshine Coast to the Gold Coast and I always said I wanted to go back there with the camper...

It's a great spot - you can get a site pretty close to the beach, and they stop the 4wds driving on the beach so you don't have to worry about getting run over :)

The sunset from there is just magic!

I'd be interested in any opinions on this too.
We basically always camp on the eastern beach but once we camped at Yellowpatch however that was mid-winter and the bugs did not worry us at all, and once at easter we planned to camp on the south-western beach (south of tangalooma) but after only a couple of minutes there we realised the sandflies would drive us nuts and we relocated to the north-east.
We've never tried the north-western area, except have spent a few afternoons there playing/splashing and have not noticed the bugs at those times.
The kids are getting older and would like to play by themselves in the water, so the north-west might be a good option in future.

Like you bnk, most of our camping has been done on the Eastern beach, but on our early trips to Moreton we camped a number of times at Ben-Ewa. Great spot for families, toilets, cold showers, water on tap and most of the time a calm beach. Ben-Ewa has only a small number of campsites that are set back off the beach...forget off hand but I think there is been 10 or 12 sites...years ago there were more, but a permanent commercial campsite on the left side of the ring road has been allocated for back packers who visit the island...not sure if they are still there, they were the last time I visited.
As for the mozzies and midgies, can’t ever remember them being too bad, I think early morning and late afternoon they were at their worst, but nothing a hat and some repellent didn’t fix.
Afternoon sunsets were great. Most days saw everyone trudge down to the beach with chair and a beer and watch the sun slowly sink down over the horizon...magic!  :cup:
