How do you do it?

I've been self-employed for many years. When I don't work, I don't get paid. No holidays, no long service leave.
I just have to put some $$ away each week to cover time off. After previously working all available hours, we've decided we're going to get away for a good holiday each year. 6 weeks seems to be a happy balance.

The holiday is cheap, it's the time off work that's expensive..........but life is short..........

I guess Im pretty lucky as I own my own business, its just me in the workshop(thats the way I want it) and I simply save flat out and when I have enough, I give my customers 6mths notice that Ill be closed for _ months. Then I simply close the doors at the said time......and hope like crazy Ive still got my customers when I get back. So far after 2x 3mth trips business is busier than ever.

I get 4 weeks AL per year and currently I have 150 days untaken leave owing + my long service, and not a snowballs chance in hell of being able to take any of it as there is no one to run the show while I am away. I have had 18 sick days in 29 years. It is looking like I will just have to cash them out when I retire, but that is 20 years away yet.

My hubby works in the mining industry.  Up here you take 1 block off and get 12 days total or take 2 blocks and get 20 days.  His holiday hours build up very quickly.  Every 3 months he has 100 hours.  I am a supervisor for a private contractor and I just ask and I receive!

I get 37 days leave a year which is 7 weeks and 2 days......I'm currently owed about 12 weeks annual leave......Plus, I have been with them for over 20 years so 6 months long service is also sitting in the bank.....

I'm pretty much in the same boat as this, also I get a flex day every fortnight, which can be saved if I want an extended long weekend, the misses is almost the same as well, the benifits of working for the Government.

I am a shift worker on a 5on 5off roster. You don't use any of your leave as you just use the 5 days off to go away.

I have recently done a 3 week trip up to Karijini NP in WA and it only cost me 9days leave. It's the joys of working shift but just remember there are bad bits as well.

You don't get every weekend off, you miss out on a lot of birthdays and family things.

It's a give and take to get the lifestyle that works for your family.

I work for a large Telco and we are told to keep annual leave balance below 10 days. We can go negative though so thats not so bad. We can also buy and sell up to 2 weeks leave annually and take LSL at half pay. There is also a provision for 'career break' which can give you a 3 month unpaid break with your job back at the end of it.
One of the suppliers in the USA tells me they only get 2 weeks annual leave when they first join but it increases over time. Also if you don't use the two weeks you lose them as they don't carry over!!  that happened to this particular guy as he was to busy to take leave so he lost the entitlement

I work 7 days 7 nights 7 off that works out to be 17 weeks a year off plus annual leave. If you take 14 annual leave days off you end up having a month off hmmmmm perfect

Same for us, we both work for ourselves so we try and make the most of extended public holidays which we dont work anyhow.
 I work out what we are doing and where we are going for the following year, add it to the budget and put money away each month....

Sounds good. Me personally, I don't think I could do shift work. I'm not adaptable enough when it comes to work. I can adapt to anything on holidays though....

Hmm, never had a job for 10 years. Have always been retrenched just before it or contract finished.
Current job is shift work, 4 on, 4 off for three rotations and then 4 on , 6 off. 2 weekends in 6 are working weekends, one is standby, so only 3 weekends are 'plannable away' weekends. But oneof those bookends the 6 days off. So with 25 days off a year, and only having to take leave days to cover rostered on time , some carefull selections can see nearly 3 weeks off for a loss of 8 days leave. A lot of times  a few shift swaps or a quiet request into the roster clerks ear about a desired weekend off  sees you rostered off for that festival weekend or show you want to go to. As long as we dont break our comapnies cardinal rule of 48hrs between night shift and day shift then no questions are asked.
 We can accumalte 50 days leave but then get forced to use it ( I have seen one guy literally frog marched off site, his email and access card disabled for the month !) . At the moment I am up to 33 days.

Up until recently I worked shift work, week on week off. this tied with 4 weeks leave meant plenty of time off.  Have just gone back to Monday to Friday, so will have to wait now and see.

Sounds like the company I work for, I get 4 weeks annual and 10 days sick that don't accrue,  cashed out 6 weeks, once had 3 months off from a motor cycle accident, paid leave.
Don't get long service till 15 years (I wont make it) and currently have 14 weeks leave owing, the last three years Ive managed to have a 2 week holiday, the rest of the time they say they are too busy and there isn't any one to fill in,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,I'm looking elsewhere

Thats unfortunate that you aren't happy there, I love my job and the lifestyle it affords me, I am going the other way I am staying with them and just let the time accrue and retire early on full pay. I love the long weekends though as we can hook up the Finch and head away.

In two weeks I'll be starting with a new employer, 27 days annual leave, guaranteed RDO every second Friday (I already have the next 12mths roster) and early finish every other Friday, that combined with relocation to some great outback touring and camping country will see plenty of hours spent under canvas in the times to come.

Will certainly make up for all the crowded long weekends spent out from suburbia, we are so looking forward to getting away and seeing less people that you would if you stayed at home, crowds just do my head in we would avoid going away during long weekends and holiday periods just for the peace and quiet.

Good on you Griz, that sounds like a winning plan , my father is doing the same thing, all of his leave accrues, so he is looking at being able to leave work a couple of years early and just go back for a day to collect the gold watch  Though I thing it might be genetic, his father made the papers when he retired for for having  some insignificant amount of sickies      As they say, if you have a job you love, it don't seem like working.
I got my camper with sole plan of restoring my work/life balance, my oldests just turned 9 and Ive only had one four day long weekend away with em, my fault though, there is more to life than pleasing your Bosses, and at my work place there are far more bosses than workers.....Tis time to take the kids camping me thinks

Or the other option is to " Throw your cards to the wind " just go Arrange your rig & CT then make dust . Its just another point of view , l have done it twice . All l did was to stack some cash point the rig & go . It sounds silly but there is a whole new world out tyhere but you ,, have to go & find it . At worst you can come back & start again , though where ever you go you will start again  or is it just another step on the road you follow . Moe said The longest journey starts with the 1st step .

I work for the government in land management. 4 weeks annual leave, 16 weeks LSL owing, .5 day extra leave pro rata for each rostered Sunday worked + accrued time for working extra hours on weekend and mid week except got emergency work(fires). Cannot take leave over cup weekend, Xmas holidays or Easter. Still adds up to about 9 weeks a year + LSL.

Pay is nothing flash but work 10 country minutes from home to work, my supervisor works in another office, spend my days in the bush, lifestyle over pay suits me.

This year so far, 2.5 weeks in Darwin barra fishing, 1 week boys trip to Geehi fishing and planning 6 weeks up the QLD coast in September/Oct.

Next year up centre and down west coast hopefully.

Can't complain.
