Transport costs for campertrailer...wow!
« on: May 16, 2012, 10:06:37 AM »
Hello people,

As posted in another section I have purchased a Jimboomba maddison offroad, and yeah it is finished today!  I have chased some quotes to get it transported to Darwin from Brisbane and so far have only heard back from 1 company.....$2000....phew..are you kidding me, the thing only weighs 450kgs! ??? >:( :'(  Might be cheaper going by Australia Post.

Given that the truckies have just had a bit of a demo in Canberra because of how hard they are doing it, I thought I would get some fairly prompt replies to my request for quotes....not so.....I have had to contact the 3 places twice to get a quote and still have only received the on....so they can't be doing it too hard because they don't seem that keen to get my business.

I'll let you know how I get on!

A quick check on Google maps tells me it's 3400klms one way, in my truck that would be about 850lit of fuel @ 4 klm/lit ($1300), a pretty skinny margin for what would be 5-6 days work as a taxi truck, which is the way I run. My normal rate would start a over $10k for that run.
The load you are talking about is not something you do by weight it's looked at in pallet spaces and charged accordingly, your trailer is taking up 6-8 pallet spaces on the trailer.

Your average semi runs at about 2-3 klm/lit at  $1.50+ for fuel they are not a cheap thing to run add into that rego( $thousands), servicing and tyres your talking big dollars every year to fun a truck, yet in my experience the customer wants to pay $50 an hour still.

No offence intended, just giving you an insight into the other side.

Hi,

I freight production equipment for shows around a lot and I think the price is pretty reasonable for Brisbane to Darwin. It is not just the weight it is also the volume or cube. A camper is not what they or I would call truck packable or easily pallet-able. You could try Shaws Darwin Transport, they have good rates. The rate also can depend on the speed of delivery. We have got better rates at times when we do not need the shipment urgently and they can put it on a truck to suit them.

On the Perth to Brisbane price, this is always cheaper as the trucks are loaded to Perth but almost empty coming east, so the cost is less. A shipment that cost me $10,000 from Sydney to Perth was $3500 to bring back. Same for freight to and from Darwin.

I don't have much experience with the cost of transport but it was going to cost me $650 for the trailer to be freighted from brisbane to sydney...until I could see they were desperate for sales at the show and got them to throw that in as well.

Transporting a camper trailer from Brisbane to Perth to Newman WA was $2200-$2400, and that journey is over 5600km.

yes shipping trailers can be difficult and hence expensive; it is far cheaper to ship a car - a car can be driven on/off the truck etc

Yeah thanks for that mate....no offence taken!

I guess that explains the cost and show's it's not that expensive after all.......it doesn't explain the difficulty in getting the quotes.  They must be fairly busy :cup:

not just over your way, over here its bloody terrible. And unless its a new build, they don't know what to do it seems. All are only interested in building site work, where they don't care about the mess or care factor. Most are not interested in renovations when new builds are much easier.
End of rant...............
Why do people ask "What the hell were you thinking?"

Gday, it might be worth while getting in contact with someone like kerrys, bridge or even hidden valley ford as they may know of trucks coming up half empty. Also does the factory have a fork lift? can it be forked on to a truck instead of going on a car carrier? Call shaws too, they will more than likely have a apot for it (No affiliation with any)

Cheers!!

Yes I have a CT in Gympie, I need to get it to Tennant Creek NT. I may be able to get it on a truck in Townsville, so could a few places to get a qoutes from Gympie to Townsville, cheapest was around 800 dollars, so your qoute to Darwin looks cheap in comparasion. I am still weighing up what to do. I dont have the time to go and pick it up.

Couple of years ago I brought a 6.5m boat (overall trailer length 9m) from Sydney and had it freighted to Adelaide by truck for about $1200.  The fella that did this specialises in moving boats between states and his home base is in QLD.  I think he manages to keep the cost down by picking up and dropping boats off along the route, and obviously the more boats he picks up and drops off on any trip reduces the cost for you.

You have to book in with this guy a couple of weeks in advance, so he can put togther an effecient schedule of pick up and drop offs, but it may be worth calling some of these boat freighters to see if they can slot in your camper trailer.

Try pricing a cheap one way airfare from where you are and then hiring a car to tow the trailer home.
Remember you do not need a 4wd or a V6 or V8 to tow it home on the bitumen.
From my estimation much cheaper then a truck.

Where is "over here" cruisindub? I'm a chippy and I prefer to do reno work over new builds. Problem is clients seem to expect to pay new build rates on something that can be much more challenging and time consuming.

I too did your job in an earlier life and how right you are, ,,,,hence I don't do it anymore.

Though I'm seeing a niche market developing in this thread for a, National Camper Trailer delivery service (quick register that business), if the national economy stays up and people keep buying campers interstate, wouldn't be so terrible driving laps of the nation with a different camper on the back for each leg of the trip  ;D

If you honestly look at the costs involved you would think again. I've got the perfect truck, 30 foot tray, only uses about 20-22 l/100 klm, but it is still a truck, rough and uncomfortable. 15 litres of oil per change (10000klm), you can only work for 12 hours a day(that includes loading and unloading) them you have accommodation, tyres are only $600 each and there is 7 of them, if you blow a rear tyre you are generally up for 2.
And most people want it delivered today for $300 Bris to Melb.

It does sound nice but the reality is quite different. I would say the only people making money would be the company who does Jayco's up the east coast.

Edit: If you had a guarantee of 6 campers Bris to Syd or Melb every week at $1500 each, and a few back each week, that would be a business, but without that guarantee I honestly can't see a business in it, but I'm just a truck owner/driver and labourer.

Hi Chippy,
West Australia mate. Actually thinking of it, I should put this in the "is this typical Australian " thread.
phoned 6 companies to quote for rendering my house. 3 wasn't enough.
1 never phone back. At all.
1 came, poked around. Gave a verbal price,I said great, lets write it down. Ill have to come back
A few days later a quote in my mailbox, 2k more than verbal price.
1 came out for a look, all ok, measured up, all ok,get back to me with a price. After a week, I phoned left 3 messages, never returned my call. At all.
another came, looked at my 100 m2 3 bedroom 1 bathroom house, wasn't interested, said he normally does new builds where there's plastic on the windows,no worries about any mess,no garden etc. Not really interested.
Had another come out,all ok, quite keen, measured up,said get back to me with a price, after a week I phoned him, he said yeah I got a couple jobs on so not I didn't bother on quoting on it.

Had another one come round, said he can do this, but not that, will do the house, but not the pillars, etc.
Laterfound out he doesn't have a good name at all. Famous for never finishing jobs properly, bit or a shady character. Price was a bit cheaper than the only other quote, but a poor man pay twice. Rather have a good job at a fair and correct price, than skimp a couple hundred.
Needless to say, my house is still not rendered.

Hi Singo, I should have whacked up tongue in cheek emoticon, I have relos who haul freight and completely agree with ya.
I was more insinuating that it wouldn't be too bad touring the county with a new rig on the back, see new places, trying new campers and getting pocket money to cover fuel, free holiday  ;D Delivered tried and tested  ;D
