External Water Tap
« on: May 13, 2012, 07:35:26 PM »
Have recently purchased a camper trailer that came with a water tank and built in taps. As the trailer has been sitting for a while I decided to pull the tank out and flush it, renew all the hoses and just generally give the whole setup a once over. As the system stands there are currently two taps, one that is fixed on the outside of the trailer near the filler and a removable tap that fits into the kitchen sink.
I am trying to decide if I need / want the fixed external tap. I have had a think and can't see any situations where it would be a good thing, it seems like it would just get filled with dust and provide a handy home for bugs. Just looking for some opinions for and against the external tap, always good to get a second opinion.

Picture this. You pack up the camper and then as a final check you check the hitch and chains etc and get some mud or grease on your hands. An external tap to wash you hands with would be handy.
It is one of the next things I want to add to mine.

keep it.  after the clean up, kids washing before dinner, connect a hose and an outside shower after the beach.
Are we there yet?

X2

A lot of CT manufacturers have them now. Anyone know where you can buy the unit as a whole, incorporating filler with tap, rather than doing my own sheet metal fabrication?

Have one and cant do without it... I put an end cap on it when we travel to stop the bugs and dirt getting into the tap. simple purchase of about $1.25 from hardware store.

Has the othesr have said, keep it and have two.
We have an external tap hooked up to the 12v pump and it is very handy if we need water after we have packed up or while we are traveling and need water & the kids can wash their hands before eating or they get dirty as kids do and it saves them going inside the camper.
For the sake of it, I'd keep the second one.
BTW, we've done a few miles down dusty roads, and have never noticed that must muck in it  ;D

Good for filling buckets and porta potties. I fitted one to my rear bar as a temporary measure. Once I gotm y drawers in and finished off the job, I left it there as it was handy!

As stated very handy. great for cleaning up after packup and also rinsing lunch plates etc. Mine is a hand pump and might look at fitting an elecy pump to it.

What they all said x 1,000,000,000!!

I can't stress enough how important our gravity feed outside the camper tap is.  We use it every single trip without fail.  It's great to leave on to fill a bucket, the dogs water bowl, washing the hands, getting crap off your feet, the list where water is useful outside a dirty filty camper trailer is endless.  Ours has an ant cap on it ... I call it that as there is an ant on the cap ... all the lines going to it are food quality and I wouldn't hesitate to fill my water bottle from it on a trip.   Much easier to turn a tap, remove a cap than to unlock the kitchen, pull the kitchen out, turn on the electrics for the water pump behind yet another locked door and then lock all these things back up again ... just to wash your hands or have a quick drink.

Very Important Point --->  Whilst in camp, it saves waking up a sleeping partner and/or whole family and/or your neighbours by turning on a very noisy water pump to fill the kettle for a cuppa at sparrow fart when you really just want a cuppa and some alone time.

Agree def keep it, so glad we got one on ours, it's generally the last thing we use after packing up, plus using it for all the above mentioned things during our stay.
