Where to store spare fluids in tourer wagon

Hey Guys, (stupid question 654)

Yet another question in preperation for our lap.
where (and what) so you store spare fluids - oils etc. in a fuly loaded tourer wagon?

box on the roof? in the boot?

Brake fluid we keep in a side pocket ( standing up ), engine oil I carry in a 10lt black fuel container, their strong, have a screw in spout and a handle for easy carrying.

Inside rear quarter panels there a bit of spare space for 'emergency' stuff like a couple of fan belts. maybe you could tuck a coupel of spare lites there. What 'spare' fluids do you plan to take?

Need to be pretty self sufficiant but i realise i need to be realistic about it.

I cant carry enough oild for a complete service or anything.  But would be nice to have brake fluid, power steering, a couple of litres of engine oil. a couple of ltrs of gearbox maybe?

It's good to Be Prepared but if you need a vehicle routine service en-route, organise it at a town on the way. Other than that, you won't need any of these fluids. And if you do, a few iddy-biddy bottles ain't gunna help!

So if the car uses a little engine oil, or a little brake fluid your saying that its not worth topping it up?

Here's a big picture view: If your car 'uses' brake fluid, get the problem with your brakes fixed before you go
Oil - buy a litre when you buy fuel. I'm quite sure your car won't use more than 1L of oil in between one fuel fill and the next. If it does, get THAT engine problem fixed befroe you go, too.

Common sense dictates the same vehicle preparation regime for you your coolant and gearbox/diff oils, too

that way you won't have to lug around fluids

Mate, I store most of the fluids, including coolant additives in a largish tub - just in case of spillage but really, smaller things like brake fluides etc can be stored anywhere [upright] they fit that won't get them crushed.

On the subject of coolants, I also carry a bottle of Bars-Leak and spare hoses...you never know when you might hole the radiator or blow a hose.

I never said the car would use a litre of oil between fuel filups.  I am very confused by your posts. I am asking where other people store small amounts of fluids in their car.  I am not asking the merrits of carrying said fluid.   If you choose not to carry spare fluids then that is your opinion.  However this has nothing to do with my original question.

Not a bad idea with the fuel container - was just thinking about it (should have been working!) and was thinking i might be able to use the small metalic "primus" style 1l bottles.
Anyone used these?

I only carry the 10l of engine oil on big trips............................have you seen how fast an engine drains with a small hole in an oil filter ?   At a pinch you can use the same oil to top up a gearbox or t/case for a short time to get you back to civilisation.

Always look at what "can stop the car" or just "slow the car up". to get back to civilisation.
eg. a stuffed shock wont stop a the car getting to a town for repairs but broken wheel studs will....

snapped all 6 studs at the axel flange.

Had no spares as we haddent had the car all that long and i was always going to get around to it!
Had another car with us so they went for parts - luckily only about 90mins out of town
                                                                           - unluckily it was new years day!!!

Obviously now carry a full set of front and rear studs!

Also you can still see the mark in the road from the brake rotar.  We drove the 800km home with three studs and 3 holden commodore head bolts, with 16mm nuts as spacers!
Stopped after 1km, again at 20km, again at 50km, again at 150km - then nothing had moved and figured bugger it then drove home. 
But hey at least i have an interesting story!!

i store all the spare fluids in the esky or fridge but they must be kept cold as if an emergency comes up they will be useless warm

Exactly JK. Even a stone hitting a brake line, any thing like that. To not take fluids when your outback is really not that sensible.

On the same vein. I don't take gear box oil. I am happy to use engine oil for gearbox, transfer case and the diffs to get me to the next stop if that is the only option I have. So I take engine oil and brake fluid. If I have to I'll use brake fluid for the clutch as well, hell, if it's life or death you can use water in the Brake lines (Yea I know, they will be shot after but like I said, life or death). I know what it's like to pack for 6 Months and travel to the remotest places and I just can't see the sense in taking every oil.

The only exception to this if for those in a Patrol and a great LSD, then I wold take LSD oil. As our Paj has a Torson LSD which is gear based I can use the standard oils with no ill effects.

N:B No gear boxes were harmed in the making of the post

I carry ours in a bin on the roof along with the other spares I hope not to need like belts and spare shockies etc.
