This popped up on the QLD Police FB page today. Gave me a good ole belly laugh... But I bet we've all thought about trying to do it!

Cheers

Seems like a pretty small fine ($166)

Less than speeding, 14km/h over the limit.

QLD
<13km/h = $133
>13 and <20km/h = $200

I think there is something with weights of the trailers or tug that differentiates it from being like a Roadtrain.  Also then need the appropriate licence.

Fairly certain the tug has to be larger than 4.5t gvm to be allowed to do it.

Here's a QLD paper saying it's prohibited.  I found an NSW one similar earlier that talked about only applying for vehicles under 4.5t GVM, which is where I come up with the above idea.

FromVicroads:

Caravan regulations
As well as having a registered and roadworthy caravan and towing vehicle, owners need to be aware of load limits.

Under no circumstances should the total mass of the loaded caravan exceed the lesser of:

the maximum mass as specified by the caravan manufacturer;
the towing limits recommended by the towing vehicle’s manufacturer; or
the rating of the towbar.
Exceeding these limits is illegal and can also void both mechanical warranties and insurance cover.

Further regulations also prevent:

anything to be towed behind the caravan;
anyone riding in the caravan while it's in motion;
towbar equipment obstructing the vehicle number plate when the caravan has been disconnected.
If you are travelling interstate with your caravan, check individual State or jurisdiction regulations with the relevant authority, before you leave.

Only a standard driver licence is required to tow a caravan. P-platers can tow caravans but L-platers cannot.

Hi,
   Apart from the laws in a book that prohibit this......

Purely from an engineering/safety perspective (and I know zilch on either), what would be required if it was decided by our esteemed leaders that this was a desirable thing to do?

Some I can think of....

Possible restrictions in congested areas in towns (but what are B Doubles doing in Hobart I ask)

Braking? I guess electric would be needed, open to suggestions on that.

Long vehicle signage at the rear? - doesn't look as long as a freighter!

Licence? I guess that goes with out saying - need to demonstrate some knowledge/skill set perhaps? - unlike Grey Nomad Pops setting off with a new tri-axle caravan who we know/hope will keep out of trouble.

Me?  I can't see why it absolutely must be prohibited!  But I'm happy to read opinions to the contrary.

cheers

Edit:  I remember the tow motors in the RAAF trundling around the flight line with about 7 or 8 trailers behind them. The 'train' behaved quite well.

The main reasons IMO is that the end trailer will not follow anything like the initial path of the vehicle towing whilst cornering, and you couldnt back it up for sh#t.

Probably take a look at the MC regs for road trains and scale it back.

Eg.
- Creation of a new class of licence, perhaps LMC (Light Multi-combination)?
- Trailer chassis designed to take forces involved in towing another trailer
- Weight distribution
- Distances between wheels
- Total length and weight
- Wiring to allow lighting on rear trailer, possibly side lights similar to a heavy vehicle.
- Signs indicating extra long vehicle

What about all the ADR implications, as well as the lack of non rated/approved  tow points at the rear of a Van/CT.

Any manafacturers out there willing to put together a unit with a rated tow point at the rear that someone can attach a second trailer to, weight unknown, so their unit can be pulled from pillar to post?

Not to mention the any Towing Vehicle GVM and overloading issues.  ???  ???  ???

It must be friday! People arnt thinking straight!!   ;D

Yes we can discuss in lengths why it should be fine to run around like mini road trains, but next time your sitting back at your campsite watching the world go bye just take notice at how many people struggle to reverse the average size camper, let alone adding another trailer to the mix.  ???

Ah that is classic.
Love to see how that went when he hit some soft sand.  Digging out one vehivle and trailer is hard enough.

As was said: No Long vehicle sign and backs like a B-double. Problem is you probably dont have someone with an appropraitly assessed driving skill (aka licence endorsment)  to prove that the drive is actually capable.

And besides all the legal arguments....its just plain dumb! What is the Max Towbar rating on the Ultimate?

ausastar - you can do what ever you like on defence/crown land when employed by the crown. but those tugs go how fast 25-30 kph?? bit different to the rig shown that was probably cruising at 100 on the freeway..... $166 isnt much of a stupid deterant either.....
