Thought this photo would make some envious.  ;) It is my brother in law after recently fishing on one of his dams.  He has for several years kept them well stocked with Barra.  I have had the pleasure his BBQ’ed Barra and Yummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.  The secret is he bleeds the Barra and then fillets them, stops that muddy taste that Barra in dams can get. 
We put 500 fingerlings in our dam some years back and still have not bothered to catch any.  In summer you see them in the shallows and they are big, but we did lose a few not long after we put them in the dam due to flooding. One day.  8)

Not a lot of water in the dam, must be hard to paddle, although makes for easy fishing :angel:

That's brilliant!   Great to hear what you do with them before eating as I've eaten barra from a dam and no, it wasn't nice. Thanks for the info.
Just under 3 weeks to go before we head off on our 5 month trip to Broome and back, so hoping to catch barra across the Top.
Saw a fishing show on telly awhile back in one of the SEQ dams stocked with barra and they were having great success using boof frogs (soft plastics), so have bought some of those to have a go with the NT and WA barra.  Fingers crossed they like them. haha

Some of the best Barra I have tasted was on the overnight Horizontal Falls trip out from Derby last year.  Fillets cooked on a BBQ, salt sprinkled on the plate before placing the fish on.  Sitting on the house boat, nice cold bottle of sauvignon blanc, watching the sun set and in the company of fellow travellers.  Wish I was there now.   :'(
Also loved the Barra at Karumba, not to mention the prawns.   :cheers:
