You are put in a 4wd and you test 4 brands on dirt and a tar road, they could be mud terrain or all terrain.

The question !!

Could you pick the brand and if any difference between the tyres.

The reason I ask is I have 2 less known brands of tyres on both my land cruiser and lancer ( done 30, 000 klm since new tyres and still great tread, low profile tyre).

The tyres on the cruiser are named Radar and they are an 8 ply and the brand for the lancer are blue streak and are made by Dunlop but half the price.

Yes I know we look at reliability but I think we are paying more for the name and there are lesser known brands that are just as good and a lot less.

Given it is the only thing that connects the car to the road, I prefer to buy a brand name.

I guess the answer here lies in the understanding of your needs from a tyre, I do belive that there are lesser known brands that are just as good as the well know brands.

I can tell you goodyear and BFG are not the only companies in the world that know how to make a good tyre,

What poeple class as lesser brands differs on the person, what is intersting is what brands people think are lesser or better . Thats where things get interesting.

I think there are lots of good brands avail and alot of the so called lesser brands are now proving themselfs to be good performers.

I like Kumho,maxis ,hancook,nankgang and there was a time these were considered lesser brands.

Bought some no names many many years ago (since then they have made some sort of name for themselves). Never again.

100Km/h curve to the right, left rear decides it has had enough (plenty of tread), towing a box trailer, semi coming the other direction, kids in the back.

Just as well the boss was driving.

Don't like paying over $300 per tyre, but...

Ed:  The steel belts came through the tread, just ripped the rubber apart.

I've had 4 'blue streak' tyres on a 98 Camry for about 30,000km now & they still look brand new. I don't rotate them & I rarely check tyre pressure. I'm up your way McGirr so I do lots of km's on wet roads & I would honestly prefer them over some brand name tyres I've had in the past. Might be one of those 'freak runs' of good luck you hear about every now and then but I couldn't recommend them highly enough.

Some are good & some are total crap but how can you tell. I put some cheap no name tyres on an Aurion and I knew that I had made a mistake before I got the thing out of the tyre shop driveway. I drove an SS from the Gold Coast to WA & back. Before I left the car had four new tyres fitted to it costing $800 each, yes you read correct, $800 each. With the extra weight on the back the car shredded two rear tryes before Esperance. We fitted two new no name tyres that cost $200 each which made it back to the Gold Coast with hardly any sign of wear and they were quiet and good in the wet. My work car goes through a couple of sets of tyres per year so I have tried alot of different tyre brands. Out of the no name brands some were good, most were horrible. Out of the brand name tyres nearly all were good in all conditions. These days I don't have to pay for them so I stick with the brand name tyres. My advice is only buy a no name tyre if you know someone who has had success with the exact same tyre on the exact same vehicle.

In the vein of this thread, I cringe when I read people being quoted $500 for a 265 to fit an 18inch rim.. WTF!

Im pissed Im lookin at either MTZ or Toyo in 285,(was lookin at BFG and MTR, but no stock in th country) and I got quoted $500 on BFG/MTR at some places, and $150each less at others for same tire.


Got a price of $350 for Toyo MT, and $330 for MTZ. Glad it isnt daily driver anymore, couldnt afford it.

We use Bluestreak on mail delivery vehicle. 90% disgusting dirt roads, flat out at all times, 25 psi and last about 6mths, very few punctures, last about the same as expensive tyres.
Cost to us fitted $90.00 each for Diahatsu Feroza.

I use Michelin XZY3 750/16's on split rims, and have yet to have any major problems.  Yes they cost a bit, but being in a fairly remore area all the time, with no bitumen for 300 km, I need something reliable.  I have tried some cheaper brands, they did not last the distance.

Try pricing your tyres at Ravenshoe Tyres, a bit of a trip from Cairns but it may be worth you time. They have always given a better price than any tyre shop from Cairns or the tablelands.

With regard to car tyres. Have a look at what your local taxi drivers are using. When I was a valuer and doing 80k a year in a WRX I was sick of shredding low profile expensive tyres. I spoke to a couple of local taxi drivers and they were all on Maxxis tyres, that were about $80 - $100 each. I threw a set on the WRX and got heaps of K's out of them.

My employer fits the fleet with cheaper tyres.  We have weird balance issues particularly on our Ford Rangers.

Yeah there is a lot of cheaper brands out there, but I`m a big believer you pay for what you get.
I run stt coopers on mine & you know how expensive they are & find them reliable.
Remember Mr. Mcgirr tyres aren't`t tyres, did I open up a can of worms. .

Reminds me of a tale a mate told me who use to work as a tyre fitter. It amazed him how many blokes would come in  to get a price on a set of  tyres, and say "they don't need to be good ones, it's only the wife's car"
Yet on their vehicle they would have the top notch you bute rubber.
I reckon, what ever works for you.

True tyres aren't tyres but the reason for the thread was not to open a can of worms but to say we could all drive on different quality brands and not know the difference. I have had bridgestone, Eldorado's, goodyear etc over the years and they all performed good so it really comes down to price.

Are some reputable brands really worth the extravagant prices or is it just the marketing !!

A few years ago I was after some good tyres for my Statesman. Did lots of googling, asked lots of people and finally forked out the hard earned for a set of Michelin Energy XM1's. Supposedly last 20% longer than other tyres, better fuel mileage, better grip, more safety features etc (you may have seen thier add on telly..)

Well, what can I say? They were pure crap! No cornering grip, squealed like buggery at the slightest provocation, made absolutely SFA difference to fuel economy, were harsh to ride on, difficult to balance and lasted about 20K.
Went back to the dealer several times with concerns about wear in particular, even had the Michelin rep look at them after 15K and best offer I got was 10% off another set! 10%! What a bloody insult.

So to answer your question, no they are not necessarily worth the $$. Cheaper brands are quite possibly just as good if not better. I currently run Maxxis on both my SV6 Commodore and the Paj (Buchshots) and am now a happy camper. I also ended up with Maxxis on the Statesman after the Michelin fiasco, and they were great.

Ive previously sold dear tyres and cheap tyres in an other life.  As ive said before, you can buy Michelins that come out of France, Spain, Brazil or China. All built to thier speks.  Cheaper brand tyres come out the ar%se end of the same factory sold under other names.

For every good story, there is the opposing bad one.  Each to their own.  Abuse any tyre and itll bust.
Heard all the storeys, this tyre is sh&t, it delaminated.  Broke it off the rim and allways found some form of slow leak puncture or fracture from hard impact.

Ive sold Handkooks and Nankangs that got 60,000k for half the price of BFG/Coopers.  Then seen a set st%%fed at 20,000 km after heaps of rock work.  Same thing with BFG's, seen them get 100,000 km but saw a set cactus after 20,000.

Ive seen my mates GQ Patrol get over 400,000 km from new on 3 sets of Bridgestones 604/693's including the originals.  I fitted the first and second replacement sets, the last in 2006 just before we sold the shop. Its just had its fourth set fitted. Try telling him to get something else.

Ive run my own VXSS on el cheapo Nankangs  because it chewed out the rears in 25,000k whatever was fitted.  I run SHMBO Aurion on Goodgear NCT4's  coz it gives a nice ride.

Yep, there are abberations - ask anyone who purchased a set of Klebers during the early 80's.  Constant delamination problems for standard fitment Commodore/Falcon   14inch.  Stu%%ed the brand worldwide.

In the end, treat any tyre like Sh&t and itll let you down.  Choose one to the specs you require.  A Michi  car tyre built for concrete long radius  turn freeways in europe may end up being unsuitable on our hotmix asphalt and dirt roads.

Talk to your tyre dealer, they will usually try and sell you a tyre to fit your needs and your price point.

Then look for other opinions here!!

Well said! Three are a compromise by nature especially when selecting those for offload. Now BFG are Google but we shouldn't. Get to thinking they are the be all and look to what you really need.

Also,with new producers like China getting into the market there can be some lower prices to establish an entry point. The major brands can charge a premium based in reputation. Anyone new needs to generate sales, for turnover and to gain acceptance.
