The Dreampot leaked - do the other brands leak too?
« on: April 08, 2012, 09:59:25 PM »
Hi All,

Made dinner tonight at lunch time before packing up the camper and driving home along a good dusty track. We didnt think the track was overly rough (topping 40km/h in the good bits of the track), but it did have few small washouts and twists and turns around downed trees, and we even took the dreampot out of the camper and put it in the car about half way just in case (to which we found it had already leaked some water from the small saucepan). Got home and it had leaked some more in the car.

When i say leaked, the big pot was half full of stew, and the small pot full of water on top. The water leaked into the thermal outter pot and a little outside onto the car floor. (the dreampot cannot bounce in the car as its in a twin floor shelf). The jumper that was packed against it to stop it from moving around was wet when we got home and the carpet.

Does anyone have any of the other brand ones and are they better designed for dirt roads? Does yours seal better when you get a little bumpy. Just wondering if they are all the same or if the otherbrands seal slightly better?

We understand these were originally designed for caravans that never see dirt, but we love getting off the tar, and are wondering if maybe we need to upgrade to a better design to suit our type of travels.

Cant wait to see how much it leaks if we did a half decent hill climb >:D

I believe that you can buy a cover for them that zips up around the lid ... kinda like a cooler bag for them to catch spills.  Mine never leaves the kitchen so I have no idea if it leaks or not, but I'm guessing it would ... yes ... reckon it would.  I have a cheap Aldi version.

Hope dinner was okay though.

Hi HerGU,

We have the cheap Aldi version & have taken it camping only once so far. It travelled in the car passanger footwell at my feet on dirt tracks & it didn't leak but maybe that was just good luck & maybe it will leak next time.

Tim,

I wasn't aware that Aldi did a cheapo version, are they any good?

Do you mind me asking how much Aldi are selling them for, as I would be very keen to get a cheapo version just to try the concept out.

Cheers

The Aldi one seems good, I mainly use it for silverside & it works great. They were $99- when we got ours 2 years ago. Then last year they had them on sale again for $89-. They only seem to get them in once a year. Hope that helps.

Thanks Sarah,

I will definitely keep an eye out for one $89 seems cheap enough. Want something for stews etc.

Cracka,

What brand is yours?  :D

Ours is the proper dream pot, we bought it second hand.

We have an Eco Pot, which we bought at an Adelaide Camping and Caravanning Show a couple of years ago.  Pretty expensive - about $250 from memory.

But it is a wonderful invention.  Keeps hot food really hot and cooks food as you are travelling, or out and about doing whatever you do during the day!  Easy to clean up too...

And although we have taken it over some rough roads (the back way into Dalhousie Springs off the Oodnadatta Track) and Finke (NT) it has never leaked.  I suspect though that if you have the top pot full of water and there is very rough going, it could slosh around.  Maybe.

Do you fill the top pot with water?
As we dont have enough food to fill the pot, we have to fill the top pot with water - and this is where it leaks from.

No we fill the bottom pot with water, that is what the book told us.

what if you have too much food for the top pot but not enough to totally fill the bottom pot?

We have an Eco Pot that has been fantastic, it lives in its own Thermal bag and hasn't leaked in transit, but we did leave a stew cooking in it at camp last year and a very enthusiastic Goanna stole the Eco Pot in its bag from the kitchen bench while we were swimming. When we got back I had to wrestle the Eco Pot back off the greedy reptile, the lid stayed on despite his best efforts but the liquids from the stew did leak out - not sure if they are meant to be animal proof ??? ???

I hear what you are saying there.  The bottom one is a 6L (dinner) and the top one is 2L (dessert) ... well mine is anyways ... so I can see how the top one might be too small in a lot of cases.  Not sure how the others work, but (this) is how I'd consider using mine.

perhaps use a food-grade rubber band around the top pot to make sure it stays closed? I've never had our dream pot leak, and I've had the whole thing filled with soup before... I have had stuff leak from the top pot into the bottom tho, but not often
