Irukandji at Fraser Island

For those of you planning a trip to Fraser soon, particularly while the water is still warm have a read of this article

and think twice before swimming in the ocean. I'm sure the risks are low but then the little girl's mother in this story probably thought the risks were low as well.

I would be much more worried about Fraser being the largest breeding ground for bronze whaler sharks on the east coast of Australia than Irukandjii

Bit like a few yrs ago..a lot of villages around the ocean didn't know what tsunami meant......they do now !!!!

Eastern Beaches are fine no reports of Irukandji on them but western beaches have had them in the creeks for a long time i personally know 2 people that have been stung and spent a week in intensive care.

Mulldog - I'll take my chance with a shark any day of the week, over some Irukandji.

Memo to self - stay on the Eastern beaches then.

If they are on the western side of Fraser, then it's entirely possible that they could turn up at Double Island Point... scary.

As well as those, and sharks, there's a surprising number of stonefish in these areas too.

A couple of lifesavers were stung at Bribie Island last month, apparently there is a species of Irukandgi native to Moreton Bay waters, just not as venomous as it's northern cousin.

I think this is a big warning to everyone, take heed.  Do not go to Fraser Island.  It is just too dangerous.  Keep away! 

It is a terrible place anyway.  Heaps of yucky sand, dingoes, Irukandji, sharks, tourists, tour operators, goannas, marsh fly s, you name it, the things there will eat you, sting you, annoy you, just give it a miss and spread the word around.



There we go, should be more room for the rest of us now.

As the water gets warmer we are going to get more friendly little animals like this drifting south.
Easter used to be the marker for starting to surf in a wetsuit on the Sunny Coast.

Today it was 31c and water temp was 26c.................

And I am not a global warming worrier or anything like that either. I can't afford to live on the beach here so anything that might bring the beach a bit closer and create new spots to surf / fish whatever works for me........... Example....watch Bribie Island break through near Pelican Waters over the next 5 years or so.

Different story for our friends in the Solomon Islands though.
