Gas Bottles

Gday,
My gas bottles say on them that they need to be restamped every 10 years from the original stamp on the bottle,  I have been told by numerous people that shops will not refill any bottles that are over 10 years old, regardless if they have been restamped or not.  I was not aware that they only had a 10 year lifespan.

Can anyone confirm this?

Yep, they need either inspecting or dumping at 10 years, be thankfull its not a scuba tank, they get done every year  >:(

take the '0ld' gas bottles to a "swap an go" gas supplier, like 'Buning' etc and get a newer, filled bottle, then you have got rid of the old bottle and you can get them filled anywhere after that till they are 10 yrs old.

The gas contains water so the bottles rust from the inside out . By the time you can see it its to late & the gas leak & explosion could stuff up your day . To inspect , preasure test & rumble a tank is expencive . Take it to ditch&go & do just that  :cheers:

They havn't expired yet, but do the swap & go swap out 4.5kg bottles?, I have only ever seen 9kg bottles at those places.

Swap & go bottles are 3.7 kg's or the last 1 I got was.

Our Local Aldi has 4.5kg bottles for $29.90 ATM.

What would it cost to have one tested I wonder ?

At my local tackle shop it is about half the price of a swap and go to get one filled . $19 for a 9kg verses $40 for a swap and go so I get mine refiled then swap it about every 24 months or so .

I took my near new gas bottle to Bunnings for a swap and go as I was sick and tired of trying to get it refilled.
Either they were busy, the guy who does it isn't here, or they wanted my kidneys to pay for it...........
So Bunning was the go.........

Of course after I went through about 7 bottles till I found one that was in date!!!!!

No word of a lie and I kid you not.
They had probably been tested, but for the life of me I could not find a new date stamp or restamp anywhere.
There were a couple of Bunnings members trying to help me, but it took about 7 bottles to find one with a current date stamp.

I have no problems with Bunnings, in fact I love them. Could spend all weekend in one...... ;D ;D ;D
I just though I'd mention it so you can check when you go.

To be fair, I haven't struck the problem since so I hope all is fixed.

We use our local camping store in Labrador. They can fill about 10 bottles at a time. Costs about $19 for a 9kg refill.
I always use our bottles we have bought and replace after 10 years.

Rays fill gas bottles, as mentioned Aldi have 4.5kg cheap at the moment.

Agree on the re-stamping/testing. I have them delivered by the Bunnings service. I spoke to the guy when he dropped it off about the dates, he said they were tested but not stamped. He agreed it was a problem. He then let me pick a bottle out of his ute. I picked a Manchester bottle with 8 years left :)

It's been a number of years since we've had a bottle pressure tested and restamped.  Cost us a fortune at the time (we did live in a remote area though) and yes it was restamped.  Honestly at the time I thought it would have been cheaper to buy a new bottle, but I am a fan of reusing stuff as much as possible. 

The swap & go bottles are often out of date, so double check as you may have trouble swapping it back in later.

Both my Swap & Go 9Kg BBQ bottles were empty last weekend so went up to the local Caltex for a swap. Luckily I asked first how much, "$42 each" she replied. Ok, how much for a fill, "Sorry, don't fill em any more. Also we don't take them if they are out of date" and as I had swapped them from there late last year (@ $27 each at the time) I thought I would check them & sure enough they were both out of date and not stamped. They would have been out of date when I got them. Great service if you get one out of date now & take it back when empty & they won't swap it. I thought the whole idea of Swap n Go was to ensure all bottles were in date and tested.

OK, next step I went to Rays Outdoors & had a chat to the young guy behind the counter. He said sure we swap and also fill and as I wanted them swapped out I just asked how much for the swap which was $32 I think for a member. He was fairly busy so he just unlocked the cage & left me to it. Picked out two stamped 2011 & went & paid the fee.
I think I will be taking them back for a fill from now on till they are almost out of date.... and them swap them for new in date ones.

Our Local servo swap,n,go, just gives you the key and points you to the cage. Mind you, you nearly alway get a brand new bottle, I think they must be sending the old ones east by the sound of things on here.  :cheers:

I would be pretty annoyed if my LPG had water in it. Iv also had several Car LPG tanks checked & restamped & the dump valve is replaced, no sighn of internal rust. Have also cut up a few 9Kg cylinders & no internal rust. Morelikely to find them rusted externaly. Recently purchased 9Kg cylinders new with gas for $49 from Stratco.

I think you might be confusing LPG cylinders with air compressor receivers.

As DeBe said – I’d be annoyed as well (and surprised) if the LPG I was buying contained water.

Retesting cost will vary from place to place, but I recently had a 33 year old 9 kg cylinder retested and stamped for the third time – new valve plus a fill of gas for $48.00 (Melbourne)

If you have an older fully galvanised cylinder, with no dents in the case, they are worth keeping.
