Cub Camper Troubles

Hi All,

We have had our Cub Supamatic Escape now for about 19 months and we at present in it down at Brunswick Heads. For some reason we are having all sorts of trouble getting to retain it's setup if you know what I mean. Most days we have had to rejig it somewhere and it continually wants to sag over the bed annoying the hell out of my husband. He is at the point where's he ready to get rid of it as we just don't seem to be able find any answers. We took it back to Cub in Brisbane last year sometime and had them reset it and it is more or less back to where we were then. We were shown how to reset but it's just not working. Also now do all you other Cub owners find the velcro on the annex poles. Not convinced that they are fool proof. Has anyone done anything different to theirs?
We had plenty of good runs with it but are getting really annoyed at the on this trip as we can't sort it out and considering the amount of money that we have paid out for it we feel it should just be better than it is.
Anyway, if anyone has any suggestions we are all ears.

Some oen on here had a post on this regarding some poles they had made up to tighten the canvas above the bed .... now where was it .... ?

Hi The Bockies,

You are dealing with canvas, it changes its shape, shrinks, expands all the time. Also, the ground can make a difference. Slight lean on way or the other and the tent is out of shape. Nature of the beast.

We can set ours up in the morning and by mid afternoon is all askew, late evening, pretty close to good again. Sometimes can stay in shape for days on end. depends on the environment.

Get hung up on having a perfect 'tent' and you will only get annoyed. Constant change.

If the sag over the bed is annoying, you could get an extra pole or two to keep the shape in place. We do and it works for us.

Another thing, if you add any external canvas such as the awning, it can pull the tent out of shape. Change the tension on the awning poles and the 'tent' shape will change.

A bit of moisture on the ropes or canvas and tension and stresses change, changing the tent shape.

I also use two poles at the top of the bed, they hold up the front hoop and tension the canvas, this allows the rest of the tent to setup better.

Thanks everyone for your replies. Estelle, know what you mean about the canvas and level,of ground etc. we have often commented on the way the canvas changes throughout the day but thine just seemed so much worse.
Chippy, have been through Snow's thread and will definitely be getting a couple of extra poles for this purpose. They look like they will do the job.

We do as well, when we have the awning up.  Haven't had an issue with the valcro poles.

Best time to set it up in the warm arvo - canvas is the most plyable.  When it gets cold is tends to shrink slightly

Hi all,

I've used my Supermatic about six times since I bought it in December. I've also had heaps of trouble getting the canvas tight. I tried to reset the tent and that helped a bit but not 100%. I bushed the back bar out as far as i coulf while it was down (bad move) Whe  i pushed it up at the centre the centre bar bent. Now I have a bow in the centre bar near the door. It doesn't seem to affect the set up. Anyone have similar problems.

The Cub is a curious beasty in that no matter what you try to do to get a perfectly set tent, it will always resist. A lot like trying to get a teenager to keep his jeans hitch up off his butt.

Once I fitted the front poles to keep the front of the tent in shape it requires a lot less stress on the rear to keep the rest of the shape.

I saw your thread some time ago and bought some poles for the front but they were too sort. I'm going to replace them this weekend. What do you think about the bow in the middle upright pole (door side). Should I take it off and straighten it or just leave it ? It doesn't seem to affect the set up. I saw a thread a while ago about the bent centre pole but not I can't find it.

The centre upright pole will deform under the pressure from the effort needed to set the rear of the tent. It doesn't really matter so we don't worry about it.
