This is a general question on canvas seat covers. I've seen them mentioned occasionally on the forum and have been thinking about getting some if they are a good price at the Roseville SuperShow in April. I'm thinking of getting them to stop water/sand from wet swimmers and possibly dog hair getting into the seat fabric.

From what I can see on the net, you can pay anything from a couple of hundred bucks up to around $900. There seems to be a lot of mention of the mines using them in their vehicles, so I assume they are tough and hard wearing.

Are canvas covers good at stopping water and dog fur? Is there something better? (I've seen the neoprene thread)
Are they comfortable to sit on?
Is it worth spending the extra $$$ on them?
Can they be washed?

Hi Tony, we have Black Duck canvas covers. Best covers we ever had for kids. We have them on the front too but we ended up putting lambs wool ones over top.

I have a full set of MSA covers, great for the kids and keeps all the crap of the fabric. Expensive to purchase but I think worth it in the long run. Match them with a set of sandgrabber mats and you keep 90% of the sand and spills off the carper and fabric. Being a builder and driving the Patrol daily I think it helps as well

Cannot comment on the dog hair as have no hounds
I find them comfortable to sit on, they can be a little warm in summner but that is why modern cars have A/C
I think they are worth the money, better resale at a later date
As far as I know they cannot be machined wash, only wiped down

I have MSA in the rear for the kids, works a treat. Kids can spill anything and just wipe with damp cloth and nice and clean once again. They are a tight fit and you will curse a little when you fit but worth it. Haven't put them in the front as I have custom sheep skin for comfort.......

Had a set of Black Ducks in my old Hilux. On for 8 years, only slightly frayed on the drivers seat edge (where they have two layers of canvas - only top layer worn) when I sold it.

Used to regularly get wet, get mud on, have the dog jump up on them, pretty indestructable. Wipe down with a wet cloth. Never took them off to wash!

Used to get a bit warm in summer when you first sat on them.

They were about $200 a side when I got them.

We have MSA on the front and rear seats of the Patrol. Best thing ever for under the kids and easy to keep clean with a damp cloth. I think they are also comfortable to sit on.

Black Duck x 20 they are awesome, had them on my old cruiser when I removed to sell the vehicle the seats were like new

I have Black Duck covers on the cruiser since I bought it 10 years ago. Underneath the vinyl is like new. The covers are only worn at the drivers edge, where ur bum drags (well mine obv does anyway) Pricey to start with but absolutley worth it in the long run.
I have chucked mine in the mashing machine a few times, with no adverse effects.

I had MSA covers in our last Cruiser and while they protect the seats 100% and are easy to clean I wont be fitting them to the front seats again. I now have sheep skin seat covers and boy, are they comfortable. And no more burning my legs when the cars been parked in the sun all day(ok, that happens up north, not in Tassie).
So for me, front seats sheep skin and rear seat canvas.

BUT, there are more comfortable covers out there since there's a few who have changed over to using dead sheep...

Hmm. I can see that they'd be soft, but I'd have thought sheepskin covers were warm in summer too.

Might have to kepp my mind open to see what else is out there....

We have cheapy sheepskin covers in our car.

Get them from supercheap when they're on sale.
Use for 5-10 years.
Throw in washing machine when covered in mud/sand.
Throw away when completely wrecked and buy a new set.

They're not as tough as the canvas ones, but I like them because they're soft. I don't find them hot at all, the exact opposite in fact.

Father-in-law has cheapy canvas covers from SuperCheap on his ute, and loves them. I do find them a bit burney when you jump in, and they're about as comfortable as sitting on a piece of canvas could be. That said, the vinyl seats aren't great to start with, and these do a really good job of protecting the seats from dirt, water and crap. He's had them on for a couple of years now, and they still look like new.

All that said, I believe there is a fair bit of difference between the cheapy canvas covers and the good ones.

mine are being tailored made to suit as I dont have the side impact airbags, so they will wrap completely around the seat.

Depends wat you like personally.

I liked the black ducks as you sat in them rather than on them, once they had acclimatised to the seat shape.

Ive had several sets of really good sheepskin covers on other vehicles, and IMO i sat on them and didnt get the original lumbar and side support the original seating offered, even after they had been fitted for several years.

I like a firm seat, with good lumbar and side support.

Ah, now there's a thing. My parents spent a motza on getting custom made fitted sheepskin covers. Although they felt soft, I wasn't quite comfortable with them. Perhaps it was the "sitting on them rather than in them" feeling. My experience with sheepskin also included stray fibres coming loose which is one of the reasons for me looking at canvas in the first place.

Black Ducks are one of the more expensive options. Perhaps there is more to their design than double stitching. It maybe they have seams or other stuff that makes them.... different. The way they mold to the seat perhaps? (Kinda like getting your "groove" to your butt cheeks on the couch

)

When you order you BD's, they are tailored to the make/model/year of the vehicle you have. As from their website, they have over 450 seat templates to choose from.

Thats probably why they fit your b%m better than the usual ranges offered.

For me anyway, Id never go back to canvas after having lambswool covers.
Personal thing, you really need to try both in a extended drive.

Agree, canvas in the back for the kids and good quality custom made sheep skin for the front. Nice and comfy after long trip. Cool in summer and warm in winter, perfect combination.

I have several dogs, and have Black Duck canvas seat covers. The dog fur does not stick, and I use a dust pand and brush to clean up any hair, so a worthwhile investment.

We put the MSA ones on our Prado when we bought it. Were just going to do the front seats but ended up doing the back at the same time. I thought they were expensive but they worked well at Fraser. Just swept the sand off. Found them to be comfortable. Had sheepskins in the Jeep but prefer the canvas ones to keep clean.
