so the cheapest quote Ive gotten "from a mate in the freight business" was around $920 to Brisbane and double to cairns one way!
that being the case its not a viable option for me.
so think we'll just drive to cairns and not do the cape save it for another bigger trip 4 weeks to cairns and back should be relaxing i think.. go as far as cape tribulation then turn around
That sucks.
If you're going to go to Cape Trib, you may as well go up to Cooktown, even if it is only for a night or two (there's not much to do in Cooktown, but it's worth a visit, and the coast road is nice).
If you're keen you could push from Cooktown up into Lakefield/Laura, and get a bit of a taste for the Cape, but that's probably not a very viable option with the time you've got. Depends on how keen you are to stay on the move.
If I were you, I'd do a week transit to Cairns each way, which leaves a week and a half to explore around here. That's a good amount of time to get a feel for the place. It's not the Cape, but hey, it's the next best thing
. As Jules says, I'd want around the 3-4 weeks dedicated just to heading north from here.
If it's any consolation, us northerners are jealous that you're so close to the High Country.
Good luck!
