Brisbane to Melbourne driving inland leaving Thursday. Will I get through?

Hi Guys,

We leave Brisbane tomorrow to head to Melbourne catching the ferry to Tassie on Sunday night. Proposed route is;

Thursday; Bris to Tamworth via Stanthorpe.
Friday; Tamworth to West Wyalong via Dubbo, Forbes.
Saturday; West Wyalong to Bendigo.
Sunday; Bendigo to Melbourne.

Obvously Friday and Saturday could be interesting and hearing different reports about water receding or rising. I know Forbes is flooded currently but apparently receding. If any locals have details or if someone knows a good website where I can see what is going on then this will help to make adjustments in the route if required.

I'd avoid the inland route.. anything is possible.. and why risk it

Go the coast road and save yourself any trouble with the flood waters.

Major flooding continues around Gundagai where the Murrumbidgee River peaked yesterday [5/3/12] at 10.90 metres.


At Wagga Wagga, a major flood peak is expected today.


This flood is expected to be higher than the August 1974 flood event. Major flooding will extend downstream of Wagga Wagga over the next three to four weeks.


Predicted River Heights/Flows:

Wagga Wagga - peak near 10.9 metres around 3pm today [Tuesday 6/3/12] with major flooding.

Narrandera - reach 8.8 metres on Thursday [8/3/12] with Major Flooding - this will be confirmed as the peak when upstream peaks are observed

Darlington Point - reach 7.6 metres around 11/3/12 with Major Flooding - this will be confirmed as the peak when upstream peaks are observed

Carrathool - reach 8.5 metres around 15/3/12 with Major Flooding - this will be confirmed as the peak when upstream peaks are observed

Hay - reach 9 metres around 22/3/12 with Major Flooding - this will be confirmed as the peak when upstream peaks are observed

Balranald - reach 6.9 metres early April with Major Flooding

But not the Hume Highway.

Get on it ASAP, stay clear of anything to the west for the time being IMO.

Some great info and links there guys thanks. The trouble starts south of Dubbo so will change route to a bit east through Cowra and then down through Albury. Looks like all the water is heading west. The Vic site shows only side roads closed so still may get to Bendigo with caution. Will keep an eye on those links and amend as necessary.

I wouldn't stuff around with any inland route at the moment unless there was some reason you had to go that way, you can do Sydney in 12 hours from Brisbane via Pacific, then 10 hours to Melbourne down the Hume.
All The problems in Victoria have moved westward, away from the Hume, The flooding at Gundagai didn't worry the Hume either

I know a lot can change in 24hrs...

A young bloke I know came from Wagga yesterday to here. Said there was flooding at Gundagai, but not a worry.
Have a nephew leaving Albury (Wodonga) tomorrow, stopping in Canberra, then onto Cairns. He's already looked at what's what, & decided to go the coast.

Made it to Tamworth today.  No rain or flooding so far. Will continue on New England down to Sydney and then on Hume. Safe route that way.

Came through Stanthorpe to buy apples but with 3 littluns we forgot
