What is the camping 'right thing to do" when trying to save a campsite for other families arriving in your area later? What are everyonse thoughts?

All depends on how busy it is and where you are. We do it regulary at xmas but I take my BIL's tent and put it up for him. We also have a sunshade tent that we put up to save some room and then replace it with a trailer if needed.

We tend to camp away from others in the mountains most of the time so as not to have the problem

Carry a really big extra ground mesh sheet. Cover the area you want to save, put a table and chairs on it, and use it as your 'chat space' until they arrive.

Underkill rather than overkill!

Dont try and cordon off a really large area during a busy time.

Try and pick a discrete area that will fit your group - even if a bit squeezy, and set up a bit spread out. Most people will try and pick an area by themselves anyway.

In quiet times not so much of an issue.

Lastly, if very busy and someone comes in and stops to look for a spot, at least explain to them whats happening. They may even be nice people like us who you would enjoy camping with.

We will have this fun when we turn up with 28 vehicles at the Cape. We may have to say we have 28 jehovah witnesses coming and we pray to our xxxx brothers and sisters to all hours of the night

I've often thought about having a sign made up, something like "The Believers Naturist 4wd club, hymn hour each midnight"

But since we got our dogs, and out friends who usually go camping with us have two as well, just lining up the dog bowls to feed four german shepherds near the camp entrance track seems to put a lot of people off...

I pulled into a great camp site at Cleaverville Beach some years back and the guy come out of the van beside where I wanted to camp and informed me his mate was coming up from 'down south' and he wanted the spot for him, so I moved to the next site as I thought it was the right thing to do.

Fantastic thing about it was his mate had a boat and I had a heap of crab traps, the three of us got on famously for the time we were all camped there.
We remain in contact 13 yrs later

Other side of the argument, last year when we were doing the Kimberley we arrived at Windjana Gorge and the place was packed. We drove around and finally found a spot and when we were backing up a bloke came over and said he is holding that spot for a friend. There was absolutely no other place left. We had to go into a section reserved for tour groups and set up there. We later spoke to some rangers and explained why we were there and how the only spot we found was being held. They said we would have to move if a tour group wants that spot and they said the practise of holding spots is not allowed, it is totally first in. We were not that happy and also believed because we were there first we should have been able to set up in the spot we first found. It all turned out OK as no tour group came. Just another point of view. Mind you we have held spots for friends but placed chairs there, but not when all other places are full. And I am not sure about the places set aside for tour groups. Some of these areas are large and better maintained, but that is another argument.

Just do what a couple of young bucks did to us in Aberfeldy a few years ago: Rock up just on dusk, hoon around the 5 acre site like idiots then set up 50m from us (Not another sole in the whole area......)with a Projector and Screen and watch Arnie DVD's at the Car Stereo's Max Volume setting. Oh sorry, you wanted to know the right way to reserve a spot tactfully and respect others when camping. Sorry. These boys couldnt help you.....

Seriously though, i've used chairs and the "park the tug" method, but sometimes ya just say to someone " Sorry, my mate's on his way up now, he/she'll be here in the (insert timeframe)" 99% of people would respect that. Problem is the 1% who wouldn't, you dont want camped next to you either, which makes it worse. and they dont wear a badge thats says "Unreasonable Bastard" on their shirt, so ya dont know until the shouting starts........

Alternatively, Chain a Rotweiler to a stake in the reserved area...that ought to fix it

We have been on the other side of the coin also.
Went to a popular location that has been the site of a large Myswag gathering, and is prone to inundation after a lot of rain.
Now this location has some lovely new concrete caravan pads and some high ground along the river front.

So what area did the van club take?
Of course the high ground, leaving only the low wet areas for CT's and campers in general.

SWMBO- "There's not much room, shall we go up to the NP?"
Went there, no room either.
So we came back to the original spot.

So we pull up to a spot the other side of the fence from the vans, just about the only high ground left as it had been raining quite heavily earlier in the week.
Old mate the caretaker drives past 3 times while we are setting up (1.5hrs). Finally he stops and says "such and such is a regular and he might come up so you will have to move."
At that I crack it and tell Mr Caretaker " You have driven past here 3 times and tell us to move now? Besides, I dont see his name on the spot and he isnt here now, is he."
Him "I'm just sayin' that's all"
Me "Well perhaps if these caravans had not taken all the dry ground there would be more room for campers. Tell you what, If such and such the regular turns up and we have to move, then pack up we will and never return, and neither will our friends."
Him "hmph" drives off.
After this "discussion" I had several calming ales whilst the kids played, the agro of the arrival fading away.

Regular never showed, floogged down rain Sunday and Monday. Had 4" of water in out kitchen area by the time we left the site.

Jon, we have been to the same spot many times....and when we are on our own we generally go up the top...sure there are normally no toilets, but its usually peaceful, quiet and more like bush camping..

Been in another situation ... we are both (us and them) in a completely empty campsite ... not another camper for about 1/2k. They stand in front of our vehicle to prevent us going into a site as they can't get their CV in because of us. "We always come into this site every time ... it's ours ... we won't be moving so you'd just better reverse out now ..." We both got out of the car and walked away, leaving them to do the whole "person fence" for this site ... discussion ensues ... we'll let them have it, but 'Man That's Just Plain Rude'.

Luckily, Fate stated that vehicles would go up and down past this site till the wee hours. They needed to put the foot down to get up a small steep section after a creek crossing, right next to their CV.

I'm so glad we let them have it.

We ended up with 4 other very quiet campers as company where we decided to put up camp, had easy access to the main creek and were closer to a main entry information area, so cars usually slowed down or stopped and then took off slowly, as their was a loo block nearby.

To this day, I still can't believe their audacity ... and they say to be respectful of your elders? Some just don't warant it.

So reserving spots is OK to do? hmmm So when does it become "No Joke" ? i.e. How long can you reserve a spot for before it becomes beyond a joke?
- That Day?
- Over night till next day?
- Indefinitely?

Holy crap...where do people get off on this attitude? It's their site because they go there every time? How does that work?!? What about the other people that camp in that same site the other 99 percent of the time!?

That kind of thing really bugs me...you guys handled it a lot nicer than I probably would...now, where is that big chainsaw I've got round here...

Years ago we went to Moreton Island around mid November I think it was , and got a really good spot ( on the calm side , with a creek ) .

We were there for a week and half , the first weekend people just kept calling in , and asking when were we leaving.

We would say , not until the next weekend . ( thinking they were wanting to set up right then )

Finally when someone who showed up in a boat asked us as well , we asked back ,whether they were setting up that day , and he said , No .

Then it was explained to us that people would put just one single tent on the site , and pay the minimum fee , just to save that spot until the Christmas School Holidays came along in a few weeks time !

So sure enough when it came time for us to pack up , there was a family waiting in our camp spot to put up their tent and get on the same barge home as us .

But because we were in no hurry , these people insisted that they should be allowed to put up their tent in our camp so as not to miss the barge .

What a joke ... I think the booking system changed after that .

But I couldn't help but see the funny side , that if you were a single back packer , you could have stayed in any of those Phantom Camp sites for free .....
