How Much Do You Weigh
« on: March 03, 2012, 08:19:22 AM »
Your Camper that is  ;D

How many of us weigh our vans or camper trailers before we head off on our big journey?

We are in the process of packing ourselves up to head to the mainland for 7 weeks and thought it would be nice to know how much weight we will be carrying in the Eagle, so yesterday off I went to the weigh station, only to find, to my initial surprise we were overweight already  ???  So then I had to sit down and ask myself why this is.

Our van weight was as follows when we bought it in Jan last year, a 2010 Eagle Outback:
Tare Mass: 1121 kg
Ball Mass: 115 kg
GTM : 1306 kg
ATM : 1421 kg

Jayco weigh their vans straight out of the factory with no bell and whistles, so I figure when I drove it out of the dealer last year I was already up around 1230kg with Bag Awnings, Side awning, Gas Bottle full, then with the water tank if I filled it I would be up around 1310kg.

In August last year we had Jayco install, a Hot Water System, extra tank, pump, Roof Rails & extra gas bottle, with these extras I figure we are up to our limit.

We load the van with all the bits you need to survive for 7 weeks and we have a problem.

BTW, not once in the purchasing or installation of the extras did Jayco mention upgrading the axle etc etc.  I probably should of thought about it but didn't until yesterday and you guessed it, to have parts shipped to Tassie and installed before Tuesday week is near on impossible.

Looks like the Challenger will have to carry a bit more gear in the back than I was hoping.

Cheers.

No doubt you have already thought of this. However, we try to spread our load as best we can between CT & tow vehicle.

We travel as light as possible at the best of times but even so have found that there's usually something in the CT (food, clothes, water) that could just as easily be in the Pajero.

Within the Pajero we try to spread the load so that it's not all in the rear section.

Just something to consider.

Reminds me of my safari in Africa. Somebody forgot the corkscrew and for several days we had to live on nothing but food and water.

I put as much as I could fit into the Jimboomba, including fire wood, and took it over the weigh bridge and it came in at 1320 Kg and ball weight of 135 Kg. The ATM of our trailer is 1700 Kg.

Hi mccrlc,
Good question.
09 I had to weigh the camper(heavily Modified 87 Swan), bare bones it came in at 1380kg.
Now add on to that when traveling,
2X 9kg gas bottles
1X 3kg gas bottle
1X BBQ plate(900x400x5mm)
2X spare wheels
2X Batteries
1x 60lt water
1x 140lt water
Jimmy's thunder Box
Stone guard
2X Shower/toilet tents, Clothes hoist, shovel, rake, broom.
Pegs, Ropes, Annex, Bedend Fly's, poles
Wood( for leveling the camper), Chain Saw(oil + fuel)
Then there is all the cooking gear, utensils, plates + Cups, 9qt camp oven
Food, beer, drinks, plus a 33lt fridge as well as the 90lt rm360
Clothes, shoes and other personal gear.
Tools, spares, A little box of Tricks  8)

I'd hate to think what it weighs when we travel
Link to our camper, Touche Turtle
The 80 series 1HD-t when towing him, 17/100, I'm happy with that.
