How you could get lost in that small area around the Kgari camp is beyond me, the scrub is not even that thick there and the beach is only a 100m to 200m away.
Good thing he wasnt in Africa and wandered off.

I think the rangers shot the backpacker and gave the dingo a little gold star.

I hope so....

We were there in Sept 2011 and agree with the above.
Noticed it on our first visit.....

Until this backpacker was attacked I don't remember too many reports of attacks on adults (especially blokes).
Sounds pretty vicious too, not just a nip on the ear.

i guess when your blind rotten drunk and passed out on the ground (sorry i meant disoriented and having a sleep), it's hard to shout at the dingo and scare it off  ;)

Just a bit unfortunate that the tourist didn't understand about dingo safety.....bit harsh to bag him too much.......lots of people have drunk too much at some time...pity his friends didn't stop him from wandering off !!

Always gonna have a problem when there are too many people trying to see the island and because of this, the dingoes are getting more and more "tame"..

Whats going to suffer....afraid the dingo is.....the tourist dollar will see to that..

At least one dingo visited our camp every night. Didn't bother me, I was asleep in my swag. We had no food out and our rubbish was way up high so it just moved on. Laith could hear the dingo on the tarp next to his swag, so they cleaerly get right up close, not sure I'd want to sleep in an older style open swag, I heard of a bloke who had the hat taken off his head whilst in a deep, alcohol induced sleep.

As Julian said, there were dingos in and around our camps every day.  There was a large cliff over looking our camp, one night we shon the torches up in the hills and spotted 3 dingoes looking down over us.  Nearly every night a dingo was being pushed out of a camping area.  The rangers said to use a shovel, camp chair or what ever you could to scare them away.  Always lock your food away and place your rubbish in locked boxes or in your car.  After all this, it wont stop me going back.  I love the place.

sounds like nothings changed with the dingo's....on all our past trips to the island, we would always find foot prints through our campsite each morning from when they had paid a visit during the night. keep your food and rubbish locked away and they don't cause any harm.
if you want to see dingo's then go to Fraser during tailor season and go for a drive up the beach at night time, you'll see plenty digging up the beach to get to the fish frames that have been buried there.
