I'd say the only reason led lights are only in small form factor is because a large lens makes no economic sense, high power led lights have the lens as part of the led itself which is where the majority of focused light is emitted, with only a very minimal amount of light being redirected forward by the external reflector.
Going back conventional lights for a tic, as far as beam pattern is concerned, that all depends on the design, for example on my own Lf170's, I use a standard lens for range, and a combo lens to give a wide spread, the combo lens gives me excellent light with an arc of about 80 degrees in front of the vehicle to a range of about 50 mtrs at the widest point, and getting further as you come back to centre with possibly 200mtrs straight ahead.
I will say that this was only possible with hid inserts, the halogen never had enough light output to give the range so I used the standard covers on both.
