Nationwide ambulance?
« on: February 24, 2012, 11:16:45 AM »
Just trying to cover all bases here. If something were to happen while we're on our adventure, does our Vic ambulance membership cover us? I know we're covered by TAC as the car, bike and trailer are all registered to Victoria. Maybe that's all we need?

Had a $2500 bill from NSW Ambulance for a 5 minute trip by my daughter who was in Sydney on Australia Day last year!

Forwarded the account to Victorian Ambulance Service, nothing further heard.

Just make sure youre paid up.

Does Victoria's TAC cover you interstate, or is their reciprocal cover from the interstate insurer?

From The TAC Website:

INTERSTATE (NON-VICTORIAN) ACCIDENTS
If you were involved in a transport accident that occurred outside the state of Victoria, you may be entitled to TAC benefits.  The TAC can pay benefits for:

a Victorian resident who is injured or dies in an interstate transport accident involving a Victorian registered vehicle, or
a non-Victorian resident who is injured or dies in an interstate accident and is an occupant of a Victorian registered vehicle.
If this applies to you refer to the how to claim section of this website.

If this does not apply to you, the TAC can still be liable to indemnify the driver of a Victorian registered vehicle in respect of any liability for injury or death arising out of your interstate accident.  A non-Victorian resident injured in an interstate accident involving a Victorian registered vehicle may have a claim against the TAC, especially when this vehicle is at fault. Claims for these accidents are usually limited to common law damages only in accordance with the law of the state where the accident occurred.  Claim forms can be obtained from the relevant authority listed below for the state in which the accident occurred, and then must be sent to Interstate claims, TAC Insurance, PO Box 742, Geelong 3220:

New South Wales - Motor Accidents Authority
Northern Territory - Territory Insurance Office
Queensland - Motor Accident Insurance Commission
South Australia - Motor Accident Commission (Allianz)
Tasmania - Motor Accident Insurance Board
Western Australia - Insurance Commission of Western Australia
If a Victorian registered vehicle was not involved in your accident, please contact the relevant authority listed above for assistance in making your claim.

For general enquiries about interstate accidents involving Victorian registered vehicles, please telephone the TAC and ask for the Senior Legal Manager, Interstate claims.

As previously mentioned on the recent thread 'public health system ' , yesterday I called 000 for an ambulance for my wife who I suspected was having a stroke, so far all seems ok, waiting on MRI scan,
Now I am white at the thought of 2500$ for an ambulance ride to hospital, also 5mins, is this normal?
Why do people ask "What the hell were you thinking?"
Obviously I was thinking I was going to get away with it and not have to explain it....

The flagfall cost would be $1500 if an Ambulance was a Taxi.  Membership is cheap insurance.

Ambulance is actually dearer than the fire brigade.  We get regular accounts at work for the CFA where our Emergency Reporting EWIS System has been triggered accidentally.

"Number 3 Large Ladder"  30 Minutes @ $860 per hour - for example.

They dont take any notice of requests for waiver any more (nor should they)

I worked for Qld Ambulance for many years and I was always amazed at how many people chose not to be covered.  It is a very expensive exercise if you happen to need an ambulance and are not covered.

Yes, I would think that somewhere around the $2500 figure would be pretty normal.  It bites to get a bill like that, but when you are desperately sick or hurt you just want the help of ambo's as quickly as they can get to you.

I hope that your wife is okay cruisindub.

Fairly sure you can be covered by your health insurance (check) as well.

Not sure here, but I think if you need an ambulance due to a motor vehicle accident (no choice), there is no charge.  Double check on that one.

I think you are lucky - there are various cross subsidisation processes in place across Oz.  As Ive posted, here in vic the minimum call out and treatment cost is $1250 plus a per minute charge of $11 from when they arrive  unitl when you are accepted by emergency at the hospital.  If it takes an hour to get you admitted, then the $2000 plus is not an out of site cost.

With relevance to my previous post, I dont know how long the Ambos treated my daughter on site for, I dont know how long they travelled to treat her. i dont kno how long they waited to admitt her.  All I kno is we got an account for $2231.50.   I really dont care. (apologies, this is not a swipe at you barneys).

I have a neice who is a NSW ambo, drives one of the critical response units in the UBD (Subaru Forester GT), licensed to cross doublle lines, travel on the wrong side of the road, etc, One up!.  Travells 2 all the drug overdose callouts = same person 3 times a week!

Whatever theyre paying her, triple it!!

Thats where the costs go.

Anyway, previous post more important, cruisindub is a bit stressed ATM.

Here in Sunny Qld, we were paying for it on our electricity for awhile, but now we aren't.  Not sure what cover we have here now.

Thanks for bringing this up so I can find out.

An Ambulance Victoria will cover you interstate as there is reciprocal arrangements with other states.  If needed you can get Air Ambulance back home for recuperation.
BUT (for others) private health companies (most) will only only cover you from the incident/illness to the nearest medical aid - and that's it - read the fine print!

cheers

Estelle, Be very careful relying on Private Health insurance "Ambulance Cover". Like all dodgy insurance companies, many have a list of exclusions and "we dont pay for this and that" clauses that can leave you out of pocket for your premium, and then out of pocket for the bill too! Ambulance cover in Victoria for example is only $75 for your family. Bugger all really, and you have no risk of any cost, including non emergency transport, not only for your initial trip, but any follow up trips if required, such as transport to rehab facilities, between hosptials or to appointmetns if you are not able tov make your own way. Most Health insurance policies DONT pay for this. They only cover "Emergency Amublance"

One company that I know of only pays for "emergency Transport" to hospital. If I as a paramedic code your transport as "non urgent" you wont be covered = $980 minimum (metro) or that plus time/distance fee in rural

People wonder why Ambulance costs so much. Well, basically, even though we get paid less than the dude with the Stop/Go bat, do you want the Stop/Go bat guy or girl attending to you when your heart stops or loved one is having a heart attack, stroke or major trauma? Probably not: given that Stop/Go Bat person training does not cover that kind of contingency - just how to ensure 2 cars dont run into each other!!! (Oh, we have an EBA this year in Victoria - end rant). If we werent wasting a lot of our time dealing with losers we might actually be available to help those who actually need us!

Paramedics in Victoria (and other states too)for the most part are degree qualifed. A lot of  most mechanics charge upwards of $80/hr these day! Nothing is cheap.

For those in Vic though, return transport  to Victoria by Ambulance is at the discretion of AV, and is not a "right" under a subscription. It may depend on your medical condition and other factors

How it works in Queensland now:

All info taken from http://www.ambulance.qld.gov.au/subscribe/faq.asp
""On 1 July 2011 the levy, paid through electricity accounts, which supported the Community Ambulance Cover (CAC) was abolished.

The Community Ambulance Cover  legislation is still in place and will continue to provide all Queensland residents with free authorised ambulance services throughout Australia.

Question:
As a Queensland resident, what do I do if I require ambulance transport in another state and receive an account?

Show Answer:
Hide Answer:
As a Queensland resident, if you receive an invoice for interstate ambulance treatment/transport all you need to do is to send the invoice, along with evidence that you were a Queensland resident at the time of the interstate treatment/transport, to the Queensland Ambulance Service at:

                                    Queensland Ambulance Service
                                    Governance and Management Services Unit
                                    GPO Box 1425
                                    BRISBANE QLD 4001

The Queensland Ambulance Service will then make the necessary arrangement for the invoice to be paid in full.

Question:
My principal place of residence is not in Queensland.  If I use an ambulance in Queensland, do I have to pay for this?

Show Answer:
Yes. However, the following exceptions may apply:

if you hold a Department of Veterans' Affairs gold card.
if you are an ambulance subscriber in Victoria, Australian Capital Territory, Northern Territory, New South Wales, and South Australia.
if you are a pensioner in Victoria, Australian Capital Territory and Western Australia.
if you are transferred from one Queensland Health hospital to another Queensland Health hospital.
if you live near a border with Queensland, and a cross-border arrangement applies.
if Queensland Ambulance Service services were provided in respect of a work place accident or injury.
if the Ambulance Services were provided in respect of a road traffic accident.
Additionally if you have health insurance, you may be covered for Queensland Ambulance Service costs.  Your health insurance provider should be able to provide advice in this regard.

Please note: if you are not a Queensland resident you will be issued a Tax Invoice for services rendered by the Queensland Ambulance Service.  This Invoice is the responsibility of the individual and it is up to you for follow payment up with your nominated Health Fund or your State/Territory Ambulance Service.""

Hope that answers some Q's about how it works up here.

I was always amazed at how many people chose not to be covered.  It is a very expensive exercise if you happen to need an ambulance and are not covered.
We didnt chose to not be covered, having recently looked at the coverage and spoken of it together, it was just one of those 'around to it' things we were planning to do during getting ourselves organised at being back home in Australia after working away overseas for some time.
In the bill I recieved from the St Johns Ambulance was a memebership form informing that membership for Ambualnce service for Australia wide coverage for $100 for a family annually. Cheap insurance should you ever need an ambulance.
I recieved a bill for $822.
After calling 000, my wife was rushed to the hospital with suspected stroke, under 'priority one' on Thursday.
Friday an invoice was issued and I recieved it in the post from when I returned home from Perth today.

"Odometer reading 978km finish 983km. From (my home address) to (local) regional hospital.
Priority 1. Invoice total, $822.00.
14 days to pay"

$100 a year is cheap insurance. Learnt the hard way....
