Pioneer Argyle SE v's Modcon Imperial HF??
« on: February 15, 2012, 09:22:16 PM »
Hello fellow campers, I am honoured to be part of this forum, now starting second post ever!
We have been reading a few other post though, mainly regarding the two aforementioned campers, but bits and pieces of other topics also.  Very good stuff here! :cup:

If anyone has personal experience/knowledge of the Modcon imperial or pioneer argyle se, we' like to here from you.

Unfortunately, Modcons website is not very informative, bit disappointing really and I have tried calling their contact phone number to get some info, alas all i got was an answering machine as they are away at a caravan & camping shows down south.  :'(

The pioneer website is pretty super though and we have spoken to an extremely helpful person in WA who gave us a really good rundown of their product.

We're heading to the gold coast this weekend to call into longpoint rv and checkout the argyle in person but would be interested in hearing from other, more knowledgable my swaggers.

Your comments will be much appreciated! ;D

Hi Freeann,

we have had an Argyle SE for just over 2 years now and we try and get away  for a weekend once a month.
We did have some issues initially but now those issues are sorted  and we are very happy. The Argyle is quick  and easy to set up and we have had it in some rough and tight areas  and it  tows and handles well. One issue that I had was with the water tanks. I have 2 x 60ltr tanks but I believe that they now only have 1 x 125ltr stainless tank and this has resolved the problem.

Good luck and whatever way you decide to go I hope you get as much enjoyment as we do camping.

Regards
Reb

Hi freeann22,

Firstly welcome to myswag, I have no experience with the Pioneer campers although they do look pretty good to me. I recently spent sometime looking over the Modcon HF campers with Kerry and Phyllis from Modcon and I would recommend that you do the same they are very helpful people and will answer all of your questions. The HF concept really impressed me and these campers have some really innovative features, we liked them so much that we have bought the Quattro HF.

I know Kerry and Phyllis are due back from the camping shows on the 22nd so if you are interested maybe give them a call and tee up a time to have a look at their campers.

Hi Freeann,

I've got an Argyle SE, in fact it was it's first birthday last week.  If you didn't find this post from when we got it then here you go http://myswag.org/forum/index.php?topic=10769.msg160410#msg160410

We've found it to be fantastic and have no major gripes.  I have noted a few reviews in the CT mags have mentioned the gas struts were mounted in a position that inhibited access to the pole storage area when the camper was closed.  That wasn't the case for ours but would be handy to suggest.

The only minor issue I have is one of the lower storage lockers leaks water in.  I haven't been able to find the source of the leak.  A friend with a ~2005 Argyle SE also suffers the same fate.  We only store items that doesn't matter if they get wet.   While the camper is laid up I keep it empty.

Options I would highly recommend ;
Solar Blanket - amazing the temp difference if the sun is belting down.
Stain steel tap - the plastic was too flimsy
Rear mount battery - Keeps weight back and increases room in front bin.
Upgraded VSR - apparently assist if your tow vehicle has lower voltage output.
Water tank gauge - takes out any guess work
Snap on gas fitting - saves buggerising around with a spanner to connect the gas to the kitchen.

When we purchased ours the camper was made in Perth.  The company has now been bought out by Eastern States based company.  This should result in a cheaper purchase price for eastern states buyers due to lower freight costs.

If you've got an specific queries then please post them up.

... oh an welcome to a top forum.

Cheers
Leigh

There are a couple of members here with the Modcon Imperial HF.  Modcon are a much smaller company than Pioneer, but Kerry and Phyllis are pretty enthusiastic about what they do, and their customer service is great.  I think you'll need to have a look at the trailers in the flesh to make a proper decision.  We have a Modcon soft floor (the HF didn't suit our needs or budget) and are very happy with it, I'd buy from them again.

In the end it comes down to which one best suits you, I think they are both very good, but quite different trailers.

We have been admiring the Modcons for a while. Haven't had experience with either Modcon or Pioneer, but have discovered that Modcon have two websites that have slightly different info.

http://www.modcon.com.au
http://www.camperfactory.com.au

Hope that helps.

Thanks guys for the reply's.  It's great to hear factual stuff from the owners of these ct's.
I'm team Modcon while hubby is team Pioneer so we're going to be butting heads for sure!

We'll be checking out the Modcons the following weekend so as to be totally informed when making a decision.

One thing that my husband is concerned about is the length of the chassis on the Modcon and maneuvering through gully's or over crests. We're doing the cape trip in august-september so will be doing the ott.

I can't wait either way, but the smaller footprint of the Modcon is one of my major pro's as well as the storage.

Another point I wanted clarification on was the clearance between the front fold of the canvas to the back of the vehicle.  We have an 80 series cruiser with the fold down tailgate. Will there be enough standing room in between the tailgate an camper when both are open?

Too much to consider!

You won't be the only one towing a Modcon at the Cape around that time, we are up there through August and towing a Imperial soft floor...I'll keep an eye out for you.

Well, hubby and I went to on a trip to day.
It started out that we would head to the gold coast to check out the Pioneer Argyle SE at Longpoint RV and then head over to Capalaba in Brisbane to compare the Modcon Imperial HF.
After some general discussions and some research analysis, we decided to head to Modcon first.  After an hour and a half checking out the Imperial with Kerry and Phyllis and talking turkey, we laid down a deposit!!   8)
Didn't bother checking out the Pioneer after all that.  The Modcon is awesome, and will suit us down to the ground.

We're adding a few extra's, such as the full awning as well as touring awning and extended draw bar but still came in under budget.  Also includes 120ltr water tank, 232 amp hrs battery system, additional LED lighting, floor matting for annex.  Some pics below of their standard Imperial.

Phyllis said that we should expect to take delivery in early May, and we'll be counting down the weeks, days, hours and minutes, I can tell you!

Well done! You won't be disappointed. We have one of there side folds and it has done the cape and the gulf and it hasn't missed a beat. We would buy another in a flash.

I was hoping to place an order for the imperial this week but it looks like my requirements may change due to work. Will be a pity as they are a great design and we were going to have bunks made up instead of the lounge.
Anyhow congratulations you won't regret it

Looks great freeann, I'm sure you will be happy with it. We opted for the Elyisum as it provided a larger kitchen area and have been happy with it so far. Both Kerry & Phyllis are fantastic to deal with.
