Fire extinguisher where is yours?
« on: February 13, 2012, 09:50:30 AM »
I am just wondering where everyone fits their fire extinguishers on their ct's? I have been trying to sum up the ideal location where it can be fixed but accessed easily if & when required. I was thinking of just hanging on one of the annexe poles so it isn't too close to the fire source (likely to be the stove or gas bottle I guess) but then I need to remember to hang it up each time.

So what is the concensus?

On top of the drivers side wheel arch, our tent folds to the passenger side.  It is out of the way of flying stones, but easily accessible both when the camper is packed up and set-up.

Brutus,

It really depends on the style of CT that you have but as most fires usually start in the kitchen, somewhere handy to that is best.

One on the tunnel behind the gear lever between the front seats in the cruiser, and two in holders front left of the camper behind the stone shield ( but when traveling they are in the gullwing box out of the mud and dust ). The Fire Blanket hangs from one of the gas struts.
Both are close to the kitchen but not so close that you can't get to them in the event of a kitchen fire.

I would expect a stove fire would warrant a fire blanket as first choice .

I have a blanket and extinguisher in the back corner of the trailer and another extinguisher in the rear corner of the ute .

Don't forget a shaken up can of beer has enough CO2 in it to put out alot of fires . Just remember to run to your neighbour's camp to get the beer first ! :D

Hi,

I have a fire extinguisher mounted in my Cub Escape pantry draw, and a fire blanket stored under the stove, this is pulled out and hung near the stove when camping.

I have a second fire extinguisher mounted inside the storage area hatch on the drivers side of my Cub Fridge box mounted on the draw bar.

I also have a fire extinguisher mounted under the drivers seat on my challenger, easy to access from drivers side door.

Hopefully that will give me a fighting chance with a fire.

I should have mentiioned I have a fire blanket and we hang that from the annexe pole directly above the stove so a quick tugg on the straps will easily release and almost fall onto the stove. I am just looking for an easy location for the extinguisher to be perm mounted. All else fails I will make a bracket and just hang on the rear of the CT near the tail lights when we setup?

I was thinking just inside the trailer where a gap allows & just above the stove when the tailgate is closed but this is pretty useless when travelling or the gate is shut as we normally close this when we depart camp. It would however be easy to reach if & when required.

I have one in the car & boat but I am just looking for an ideal spot on the CT. The top of the wheel arch idea also has merit.

cheers

I made a bracket and hang the fire extinguisher on the kitchen bench.
The blanket is right next to it.
We also have one in the truck that is easily accesible...

Ours is where Aussie Swag deemed it to be (next to the fridge), but I also have a fire blanket handy.  Both are near the kitchen but not in it.  We also carry a large 5kg in the ute just in case a small 1/2 kg one supplied just doesn't cut the mustard.

Hi,

We have 3 x 1kg DCPs, one infront of the drivers seat, One attach to the black widow top shelf, and one in the kitchen in the adventure trailer ( this is easily accessed wether the camper is set up or not).
We also have a 4kg DCP attached to the rear wheel carrier (you can get to it with the swing-a-way closed or open.
We also have a fire blanket attached to the black widow storage divider in the back and we will soon have another fireblanket in the kitchen of the camper.

your fire blanket should not be directly above the stove. if you need to use it in anger you will need to reach over the fire, increasing the chance of burning yourself. the fire blanket should be mountrd atleast 1 mtr from the stove..

I made a holder out of a piece of 90mm stormwater pvc pipe, a glued 90mm cap and 2 90mm saddle clips. Its ideal for external storage as the pipe protects it from stone damage.

We've got an extinguisher mounted on the side of the kitchen, underneath the fold-down bench extension. If hell breaks loose on top of the bench, you should still be able to reach under and grab the extinguisher, with your hand shielded by the bench itself. It's always there, which I like, because it doesn't rely on me needing to set it up or pack it away (Goodness knows I'd forget).

When we picked our camper up JT recommended getting another two, and mounting one on the off-side mudguard (same spot as cracka's), and also one inside the tent. He reasoned that canvas is flammable, and you wouldn't want to be inside the tent and have the tent catch alight. I've been meaning to mount one in the walkway area of the extenda - particularly important now that all my electrics live up the end of the walkway.

Thanks for the reminder - this has been on my to-do list for a while.

UTE - great tip about the beer can - I'll have to remember that. I may have found a use for VB!

Thanks!
Matto :)

The KK has it's fire extinguisher in the gap created when you pull out the kitchen drawer.

BUT....two points I now see wrong with my set-up are:
1. If we're cooking without the kitchen drawer out =  way too slow to get to fire extinguisher; and
2. Why didn't I think of a fire blanket? I mean to say I have one at home on the wall near the gas stove. Why not near the CT stove? Doh!!!

This I WILL fix asap.

Great tips!!!!

Cheers - Wayne

I'm feeling a bit hopeless. Never gave this much thought either. Now on my list before the trip to Fraser for a fire blanket and maybe another extinguisher. Only have the one in the kitchen that came with the camper. Do have another loose one but never remember to take it. Hang on, I think it's in the other halfs triton. Must check.
Anyway. A fantastic reminder for me to pull my finger out and get a bit more proactive in this department.

Hi Brutus,
Cheers for reminding me i must move ours.
It's in a really bad place atm, it needs to be in a more accessible place.
In the Swan it is in the upright position in the cnr at ankle high under the club lounge seat.
Not easy to get to when the table is down used as a bed  >:(
The one in the Cruiser is here.

Held in place with a Velcro strap as well as the holder clip that it comes with.

You don't use magic to disappear, all you need is a 4wd & a Swag ;)

1 x 1.0 Kg Mounted to the drivers side seatbox
1 x 1.0 Kg Mounted to the passenger side seatbox

1 x 2.3 Kg travels on the drawbar and then is moved to the gusset behind he passenger side wheel arch when we're setup which is handy to the stove/kitchen.
and a fire blanket which travels in the kitchen and then hangs on the trailer near the extinguisher when we're set up.

Fire extinguisher and fire blanket in kitchen. Fire extinguisher in back of car. Never thought of putting one in side main tent, but makes a lot of sense. Will have to buy another.

Went to Bunnings after my last post and now have 2 fire blankets. Still to check on extra extinguisher. Like the idea beside the seat. Will look at that tomorrow.
