I new I was waiting for a reason.

Seriously though, those of you that have them how do you find them. I have used to read the paper etc, but not as a device (as I dont own one) I have a number of Ipods but find Itunes can be painfull.

Can you upload your photos on them out in the field without hooking them up to a laptop?

Are they good as navigator, or are they to large to mount and use effectively? ( I have a chepo 7in GPS that works well and is large when mounted to the windscreen)

What is the battery life like.

Is there enough storage on them? (I have 90 gig of music on my Ipod classic - very out dated and uncool according to my kids, but the touch isn't big enough)

Are the cameras in them any good?

Can you convert your DVD to play on them yet?

I am seriously considering one but it to be more than just a cool toy, the other way I was thinking is a laptop.

Jas

Hi Jason,

Agree, iTunes is not one of its strong points?

Photos can be uploaded via a cardadaptor available for about $35?

I think a GPS would be better, but you can get off road maps onto the Pad.

Battery last about 9.5 to 10 hours.

Forget 90G. Max you can get is 64G and that is without OS and apps + any data. Extra is housed on line or elsewhere.

We have the iPad1 - no camera. Guess a std camera would be better.

Any music needs to go via iTunes I think. Yes simple enough to translate on yor PC.

Cool toy pretty well sums it up. You need a PC/Mac (or some machine where youcan do real work) as the apps are limited in their ability to do much (similar to Android I believe). A small laptop or netbook may be better. Depends on what you want out of it.

Good for social networking I guess, and web browsing, images games and other stuff. Not for creating documents, but good for travellers as they can reference docs on line or have copies on the Pad. Very portable. And you can read what's on the screen  :D

I use it every day for web, mail and ToDo's, recipes while cooking etc. Grandkids love the games.

Thanks Estelle for the detailed reply.

I think they are great device, and would love one for all the reasons you mentioned, the games and apps would keep the kids happy for hours. I like photography and when shooting in RAW format my photos are 9meg each so as a storage device it would be limited especially if you have your music loaded etc.

They are great for viewing your photos I was blown away by the screen resolution on the one I played with. The only down side for me with our ipods, iphones etc (and assuming it would be the same on the ipad) is that you can't easily convert your DVD movies to an itunes compatible format. The kids have heaps of movies and I don't want to buy them all again through itunes just to get them to work.

I was thinking this is where the Laptop may be better with an inbuilt DVD player, more storage (Could hold whole itunes library)etc. But then they are bulky, no where near as intuitive or easy to use for browsing etc (and they are just not as funky).

Not sure what to do at this stage, I see some of the other tablets are offering better storage options etc, so it will be interesting to see how apple responds. However I think the apple is the best of them by a long shot.

Hey Jason,

Estelle's answered most, but I'll throw in my $0.02 as well:

Can you upload your photos on them out in the field without hooking them up to a laptop?
Yes, if you shoot JPG. The Camera Connection Kit is about $35, and works a treat. I couple it with an app (WebAlbums), and can review photos straight from the DSLR and upload to Picasa or Facebook. Not something you'd use for super great photos, or if you were doing RAW work, but as a companion to take with you when you're on holidays, to pick the good photos and upload them to make your friends jealous, it's excellent. I don't take the laptop away with me any more, just throw the camera into RAW+JPEG mode and take the iPad.

(the iPad can copy the RAW files, but you can't run them through any convertors to actually use them. So there's little point, especially if you've got a smaller capacity iPad)

Are they good as navigator, or are they to large to mount and use effectively? ( I have a chepo 7in GPS that works well and is large when mounted to the windscreen)
I've heard very good things about the Hema Maps app, but have never used. I too have a cheapo 7" GPS - it's good and is probably bigger than should be stuck to the windscreen. If using the iPad as a nav, you'd probably want one of the RAM Mounts that attaches to the floor/trans tunnel of the car. I've heard the actual GPS works very well. I imagine it would be great from a usability perspective.

What is the battery life like.
"Depends" :) We get a few day's general use out of ours around the house on Wifi. We generally hook it up overnight to charge though. When I've been away, getting a few day's use out of it has been more than achievable.

Is there enough storage on them?
We've got a 16Gb one, and I'd like more. That said, we don't hold a heap of stuff on it. We've both got iPhones for our music, so the iPad is just for books, photos and misc other stuff like that. You can now buy an external HDD that will hook up to an iPad so you can carry HEAPS of data with you. Of course, battery life will take a hit if you keep it connected, but it's an option if you need it. Is good, apaprently, for downloading RAW files from your camera, and saving them across to the external HDD for processing later with a PC.

Are the cameras in them any good?
Not really :). You wouldn't do anythign serious on them, but they're great for snapping a photo of the dogs to put on facebook. Really, any compact camera in a tablet or a phone is going to be pretty junk if you're used to shooting RAW on a proper camera with decent glass in front of it. Think of it as a bonus for casual stuff like that, and you'll be happy with it.

Can you convert your DVD to play on them yet?
Yes, but I've never done it. You'd need some form of DVD ripping software, and the ability to transcode it to mp4 or such. It's not something I've ever had the time or the inclination to do, but I know it can be done.

As for iPad vs laptop, they're both different things for different jobs. If you want to do video editing, or sit down after a day of photographing, then you'll fond no substitute for a good laptop with a big external HDD. If you need the power, then that's what you need. But for general web browsing, etc, the iPad is excellent. My wife has stolen "ours" now, despite not wanting anything to do with it when I bought it home. It's easy to use, it's handy, it's always on and ready to go - it's something we use all the time. This is particularly annoying for me, since I had it all set up with all my work stuff on it, and now I never get a go :'(  ;D.

We've got a baby little HP netbook at home as well. It used to be our "traveling" machine - it's half the size of an A4 piece of paper. But you can't do any real work on it - the screen's too small, it's not got enough HP under the hood (despite 3Gb RAM, and all the good stuff), and the keyboard is too cramped. We've hardly touched it since the iPad has arrived. I would not recommend it. iPad+CCK does it's job these days. My work laptop is a 14" proper laptop, and it's great as a workhorse machine. But despite being at the smaller end of the scale, if traveling for anything other than work I rarely take it (and it's charger, and external mouse, and and and...).

I'm holding off to see if the iPad3 does come out, at which point I'll try to acquire one through work :). The promise of a bigger battery and LTE/4G data would suit me down to a tee. Keep in mind that this time every year "new iPad" rumours start thick and fast. We all know how the sure-bet rumours about the iPhone 5 last year ended up.

Good luck! They're expensive things, but they're great.
Matto :)

Hence my interest in the Ipad. Sounds like they cover a few more bases than I was thinking. I would love confirmation re the video ripping and how sucessfull it is.

Thanks.

In order to convert DVD's to play them on an iPad or iPhone, you will need to insert the dvd into your computer and use software to convert the file format on the DVD into an '.m4v' file.

On a mac computer, the best free software I have come across is 'handbrake'.  If you google that term you will find a download link fairly easily.

As for Windows based software, I'm not sure what to recommend but there would be a lot of different programs out there that are freeware.

When you change the type of file, you can also modify the final file size so that you don't take up too much storage space.  Then it is simply a matter of adding the newly created 'm4v' file to your iTunes library.  When you sync your iPad or iPhone, you can select which video files you want to place onto that device.

As a side note, sometimes the software creates a file that is designed for playing on a tv or computer, so you need to highlight the new file once it has been added to iTunes and select 'create iPad version' from the 'advanced' menu along the top of the window.  It can be a bit of mucking around, but once you have done it once or twice it really is easy.  Then you can take a selection of your movies with you on the iPad.

Of course, you would only do the above with your own movies so that you did not breach any copyright laws.

Jas,

I am useless when it comes to tech, but we bought an iPad 2 64gb and I love it. Now as far as the movies go I asked a tech savey mate and he advised me on the following and it works a treat.

1. There is an app called cinex player $4.99 from the app store you buy this and it installs on the iPad.

2. Then you hook the iPad upto your pc at home it will then you open iTunes and with the iPad connected you open cinex player it will be in the apps on your ipad.you then basically do what we do when uploading pics to my swag .it asks you to search your drives for the movie you want( this assumes you have movies in non apple formats on your computer) .

3. You then double click on the movie and cinex player will convert them and stor them in your iPad. I have done this and it works real easy. I had some movies on a hard drive that my mate gave me and all I did was select the external hard drive and cinex dragged them off the ext hard drive into the iPad.

It really was very easy.

There is also the cloud storage thing for more space but I know zero about that. All I wanted was movies and tv shows that friends had free to be able to go on the iPad and I have archived that for $4.99 so I am very happy.

Now can someone expand on the photo thing. So I take some pics with my digy camera .how do I get them on the iPad without my pc available. Also how do I get my photos from windows onto the iPad ?

There might be a better way but that's how I was shown/told maybe one of our resident tech gurus can help out.

In summary the iPad is the best thing ever it might have certain limitations but I am a limited user so it works for me and it,s fast when logging onto wifi networks ect. 10 hrs batt life as said and I was watching vids for most of that.

I have typed this response on the iPad and I can type faster on this than a conventional keyboard.

We paid $679 from memory from good guys who did a price match from an online store. (always buy at end of month)

Hope that helps mate I never thought there would be a day when I was replying to a computer type thread LOL :D

From a quick google search, it looks like DVDDecrypter and HandBrake is the free combo that most people use. You can get Handbrake for windows - http://handbrake.fr/downloads.php

This also seems to be good, and is an all-in-one solution, but at a cost ($20) :
http://www.daniusoft.com/giveaway/free-dvd-to-ipad.html

Going off the info in this thread :http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1461459 . I've never tried any of this, but I *DO* use the free version of DVDDecrypter at home to rip my DVDs so I can play them on my media centre box over the network. It works, and works well.

Good luck!

Thanks Jetcrew for the reply mate it sounds great and you are fast becoming an ipad guru by the sounds of it.

Regarding getting your photo's from windows onto your ipad I assume it's the same as it is for our iphone and ipods. You need to go into itunes with your ipad conneted, click on your ipad (left menu), go to the photo tab,  and then select the folders from your computer that contain the photos you want. It will then sync with those folders and the photos should appear on the ipad (you may have to click on apply down the bottom to get it to install the changes).

Jas,

I have converter a couple of movies to the ipad format. They worked well but did take a lot of time....about 2.5hrs!!!! But this was on the old 5yo laptop.....the new one should be heaps quicker. A mate does them for his wifes iphone in about 20mins. I can't remember what the programs are called, they're on the laptop.

Thanks for the info re the camera connection thingy I will go out and buy one, very cheap for an apple item I thought. It will be great to just port the cape trip photos as we go this year rather than showing people the 3 inch screen on the camera.

I will attempt the importing of existing photos in windows to the iPad. But I think it's not really feasible to store all of our photos on the iPad but a few select ones of the kids and my wife will be enough I think. And of course some fishing and crabbing pics maybe a 5 to 1 ratio LOL.

Been in trouble before only having fishing pics on my phone, I said it,s because "pictures of you are always in my mind baby I don,t need them on my phone" cost me a new watch so I,ll. be sure to add some on the iPad LOL.

I used AOA DVD ripper to import my DVDs into my pc then the cinex player app to put me on the iPad. I tried a free version of the ripping programes but the rip quality was not good and cinex struggled to convert then I used a genuine copy and all was good. So maybe spend the$20 if you are going to do lots.

Great thread guys

Thanks heaps

Ipad 3 heavier and thicker than the ipad 2 to cater for the retina display.  4G capable but not compatible with Telstra 4G which operates on a differt spectrum.  I'll stick with my ipad 2

We use our iPad to store photo's when traveling. Works well. We still leave the photo's on the SD card the pad is just a back up.

When I go away for work I download rental movies and tv shows off iTunes. Then watch them when ever I want. Does not cost much. Some of the older movies are only a couple bucks.

I to have a 14" Laptop and find lugging it around a PITA. As you stated all of the chargers, mouse, external modem. Hence my interest in the Ipad.

I've got a 10" Acer Netbook with a 12v charger (about $7 off eBay) that plugs straight into the cigarette lighter plug in car/camper.

Had it for a few years now, it's gone to Vietnam, NZ, sailing, CTing with us.

It has an internal SD card reader for getting photos off the camera, and I've got a USB 3G modem for Internet access.

It also has an external DVD player, useful for getting movies onto it, and small enough to take with us if required (it draws its power from the laptop).

The unit itself plus the 12v charger and the USB modem makes a great little travelling set up.

Yes, I have an iPad too ... don't use it much myself, but take it away with us all the time ... to use as a diversion (kids/wife) so that I can use the Acer!!!
