What do you use for your flag pole?
« on: February 09, 2012, 12:57:16 PM »
i've been thinking about running a nice flag or two whenever we go camping.. can you guys give me an idea what you use - pictures would be great - for your flag pole.

i used a alumnium annex pole last time and cable tied the thing onto it, but it's a big bulky and not really easy to get on and off etc.. anyway - keen to see what other use.

Hi Dan,

used to take a flag pole to Bathurst each year and as we had Holden flags they had to be higher than everything else...  (Good way to get an off topic debate going....)

Anyway, the flagpole was a 2m length of conduit, about 65mm dia.  inside that was a 2m length of 50mm, inside that a 32mm, etc  I can't remember all the actual diameters, this is just an example of how we did it.  Anyway, we had 6 lengths that we would then extend out leaving around 200mm of each in the larger conduit and hold in place with duct tape.  All up we had a 10m flag pole.  Being conduit it tended to get pretty bendy toward the top with the flag on top and a wind blowing.  I think the top section was only 15 or 20mm conduit...  It was light weight and easy to travel with.  We used to put the bottom piece of conduit over a star picket to hold it in place.

here's what my mate brings with him as a dune marker when we go camping on Fraser Island together, it's great as you can see it from a mile away down the beach as you drive back towards the campsite. my mate is well over 6ft tall aswell, so should give you an indication of how high it is ...lol

basically it's 2 lengths of box section aluminium locked into each other, made out of 2 sections for ease of transport.
one piece has a smaller bit of box section riverted inside of it and that sticks out the bottom to lock into the section that it sits on below. there are 4 hoops (one on each side) that the guy ropes tie onto and there's also a wheel at the top to hoist the flag up with aswell as one of those things you tie the rope off at down the bottom  8) 8) 8)

Ditto to Snow, we use a tent pole for our flags also, simply tape it to one of the annex poles.

Hey Bevan,

Great minds think alike. :cup:

I was just thjinking the same thing.  That is really a cool idea. 8)  I imagine it would take up very little room as well.

We use a 12' fibreglass outrigger pole from the friendly local specialist tackle shop. One for the 4WD (on the far left in the pic) and another for the camper trailer when parked up. Classy enough to use at home when not out camping. Kept in cloth fishing rod bags in a tube on the roof when travelling. Outrigger poles will last a lifetime.

We bought one of these for the HF but also makes a good flag pole, telescopic squid pole. Cheap too.

I don't bother with a pole ... I use the Dual Purpose Rule ... my Australian flag hangs from my awning poles or ropes or I peg it to the awning to use as extra shade as part of the Dual Purpose Rule.

Back to that specialist tackle store for some bait rigging thread, which is like thick grippy dental floss (and dental floss will also work); and use that to whip on a pair of solid rings (more tackle store stuff) on to the slippery pole; and then big split rings (from the tackle store) to attach the flag, although cable ties would work there. Lifetime job and the flag is easily replaced from time to time.

I must be the odd one out here ???, we don't take a flag camping, it is only more stuff that I have to set-up and then pack-up, that eats into my very valuable  time.
