how to keep out Spiders in ya Shed
« on: January 29, 2012, 03:09:11 PM »
Well I've got my man cave, a 9mtr x 9mtr shed with 3mtr doors... Been up for a while now... Almost everything is in there, but its not setup as I want it yet, due to 1/2 of it containing mates furniture(long story).

Today after gettin back from Tom Groggin, Jindabyne, Pinnabar etc and going to unpack, went in there to see about 2 dozen redbacks around the place. With the biggest making a 50c piece look like a pinhead... I'd seen a few before in there on the sliding doors at front, and drowned them in spray...  but now they are just out in the open - from the trailer to the wall, from a storage box to another.. BIG MUTHAS... After drowning them, they are now atoms between 2 bricks. But I cant keep doing that.

Is there anyway to keep these bastards out? Should I setoff some of them Mortein bomb things every few weeks? Other options?? solutions? ideas? Help? Mayday? Code Brown?

Im worried how many are in my mates lounge and boxes stuff.. I just dont want them gettin into the campin gear and go to roll out a sleepin bag in the dark and jump in it with a family of the pricks - most of the camping gear which now lives in Space Cases to stop em.

Thanks

I use a product called Coopex. Mix it up and spray it the nooks and crannies where they lurk. Works good and good on ants too.
Also discovered a few years ago a pest control operator in our area was using it for spider treatment around homes.
Can get it in Bunnings among other places.

Reddies like hot, humid conditions.  Once you've got them the only way (in my experience) to get rid of them, is to kill them in a personal like manner.  The girls (they are the ones you can see) can't breed if they are dead.  They are Shitty house keepers and won't clean up their webs ... making them obvious.  I had them all around my house (none inside luckily) and had a daily killing spree.  They are smart too and will run and hide if you disturb them, so you have to be sneaky.  The prefer open spaces and won't usually nest somewhere enclosed (like a box), but will run to the enclosed area if disturbed.

I haven't seen one for about 4 years now.

Hi Lost,
Mate I use a spray called Crawly Cruncher
I hate spraying stuff, we have heaps of Frogs around our place and I'd hate to kill them buggars, anyway, this stuff works, it smells like it would kill a bull elephant.
I use it in the shed, to deter Ants(from building nests in timber piles or behind cupboards and other stuff), Around the house piers(Again to deter ants from climbing), the little black ones, Around the roof members and other places spider will hide.
I buy mine from Woolies.
Give it a try.

If you can enclose your shed, just take out/turn off anything electrical and bomb it a few times per year.

Lost

If it as bad as you say it is try Pidgeons Pest Control 2000.

The stuff will kill a horse.
You wont have them back, if not forever for a very very long time.
You might not want to go into the shed for a few days either.
Amongst other things it is used to treat heavy white ant infestations.
You might have to go to a produce store for a supply.

Make sure you use the appropriate PPE because it is not nice.

Hope you get rid of the buggers.

Nomad.

We have plenty of redbacks down here .... in one day I killed 20 in my shed. I started spraying with a product called "solfac pro" http://www.bayeranimal.com.au/default.aspx?Page=50&ItemId=29, which I buy from the  local produce store. (warning it isnt cheap). I found that spraying ecery 6 - 12 months seems to have kep them at bay. The black house spiders seem a bit more resilient, altho they dont worry my as much. I took to spraying the house as well after two of the kids were bitten by white-tailed spiders.  >:(

Cheers Chippy

ps for the record, Im not a fan of spraying insects with chemicals, but they are very hard to keep at bay any other way :S

I spray with either Pidgeon's Pest Controller 500 Termicide & Insecticide or Chemspray Home Pest Control.

Pidgeon's is available at any merchandise store ie. Elders etc and the Chemspray I buy through either Big W or Mitre 10.

Chemspray does not have a smell and can be used indoors and outdoors.

I have used Solfac Pro and find it as weak as pi$$.  The townies like to use this, but I don't get results on the nastiest of spiders with it.  And I was not aware you can buy Pidgeon's Pest Control in a 2000 consistency.  Would like to know if anyone can buy this over the counter.

But anyway, I do live with redbacks and like to try and keep them at bay in our sheds, particularly the Toy Shed.

Hey Peanut,

I picked it up from Beerwah from memory.
It was a few years ago. I did hear that they started to ask questions about it. So you are probably right about buying over the counter today.

I have found that a regular treatment of the whole property has worked well. We have redback,  funnel, wolf, black house, white tailed and many more. it seems to knock them all out.  I have noticed tho that the black houseys come back quickest.

I dont see the point in using anything stronger if it works. Why use an atom bomb to kill a fly ? Tis just a bit of overkill me-thinks.

FWIW I live in the country, defo not a "townie"

You're pretty spot on about Redbacks Kit_e. They dont eat / maintain their web like most spiders so spraying chemicals around won't kill them. You have to spray the Redback to kill it. I spent a few years as a pestie back when I left school. I can say that crawling in ceilings spraying for Redback wasn't my favourite part of the job.

Theres a product called "Fiacam W", we get it from our local produce store [NORCO in Grafton] and it does a super job on spiders. Mix it yourself & spray away!

Based on Brett's & Kit e's comments however, not sure if it work on the 'Reddy's.

My 2 girls have bad skin allergies so I can only spray if they are not at home and I cant use a residual spray. I use a product called webzone. it is around $80 for a litre I use 150ml twice a year in 15 litres of water. It seems to knock the redbacks pretty well. I occasionally get them back but I think that it is more to the point that it is not a residual spray. The only bad thing about webzone is it does not touch cockroaches.
I used to use coopex but had to stop because of the girls. It was probably the pick of the sprays that you could get off the shelf.

I have the the red buggers quite bad.
I use a can of spray called Mortien Outdoor Roach Killer, it has a flip out long spray nozzle. A black and orange can from memory. Is available at the big green shop but is way cheaper at Coles.
This stuff stops roaches in about 10 seconds and spiders even quicker and has a long residue factor.
Regularly find spiders dead up to 3 weeks later after i have sprayed.
Also note, this stuff is really flammable so be careful.
Good luck
