New member - Gold Coast

Hi Everyone,

Just a quick post to say hello!

Been reading a lot on the site recently as we have just decided to upgrade from a ground tent to a camper trailer.

I am about to convert a normal trailer into a camper.

I have been very lucky with the trailer, in that I have managed to buy one of the ex RAAF independent suspension Track trailers   ;D

The only downside to it is that the top is quite high so whatever tent we decide to go for will need some modifications to the drop I think. (1150mm)

Welcome Pete,

That looks a pretty strong trailer (not normal), will watch the build with interest.

Welcome to MySwag Pete,

You'll get plenty of info and tips from all and sundry on this site. 1150mm I think is what my trailer height is; I can check that for you if you wish? It's a Lifestyle "Adventurer", maybe one of their tents could be fitted??

Good luck and don't forget to post the progress on your build.

Welcome and that does look like a very capable trailer, can’t wait to see the finished product.

Thanks all.

Randan, If you did get the chance to measure your trailer that would be great. No rush though!

Thanks
Pete

The bottom of the bed base on our Ezytrail Off Road is 1100mm off the ground.  It uses a Chinese Tent.   Once its weighed down with stuff it will lower a little also (perhaps not much, given the HD nature of the springs on your rig!!!). Perhaps a shorter spring?

Others wouldnt be much different IMO.

Pete,
ours is actually 1050 so not the same. When you get to deciding on a tent you may just not be able to not go for an off the self tent made in china but have it made to suit ...from the likes of Lifestyle or similar, the other option is as you say; make some adjustments to an off the shelf tent!!!

G'day & Welcome.

Have a good think about what changes you might make to the trailer before you order your tent. For instance, if you changed the wheels and tyres, maybe even matching your tow rig, would that reduce the height? Maybe load it up with a few hundred kg of whatever and see what happens. Of course, when you flip the tent over you take some load off the suspension so you'll need to account for that.

Good luck, looks like a great project.

Thanks all,

The tow cars are both LR's so the wheels and tyres currently match (albeit in an imperial equivalent) the smaller of the tyres on one of the landies....

I already have the entire trailer drawn up in Solidworks and am playing about with it in terms of layout and planning.

When I get a bit further I will start a build thread. cheers again everyone.

Maybe convert it to air springs so I can adjust the height!  ;D
